This started out as a lightbar from an AutoArt police car. The real name for this lightbar is the AdvantEdge and it was manufactured by Whelen (long been discontinued). The real lightbar is a combination of strobes and rotators, so rather then just add blinking LEDs to this 1/18 scale version, I decided to make it look exactly like the real life lightbar. It features two inner LEDs that flash in an actual strobe pattern using my strobe PCB. The outside utilizes LEDs that simulate rotators using my rotator PCB. The outcome - a lightbar that if not for the pen laying next to it, you may think was the real thing. I am currently working on bringing these type of effects to a commercial product that you can add to your 1/18 scale models. Check my main page for upates on this project.

Got my mom to take me to Owensboro KY today to record one of the many Whelen Vortex's that the county has. This siren is an older Whelen Vortex R4 located at 1316 Scherm Rd, Owensboro KY. It sounds a one minute wail cycle and continues for a few rounds of rotating after the siren stops sounding. The siren is sounding for the weekly test conducted every Friday at noon My best friend Brooke was also there with me as I was recording.

Eight Whelen 400 series strobes being powered by a Tomar Power Supply. The power supply is used in the rear of a lightbar and features the traffic advisor patterns. Directional Left/Directional Right/Center Out/Warning with the Neobe flash pattern. The Neobe flash pattern eliminates dark time by flashing the next strobe in line before the last one is done flashing. In a Tomar lightbar the blue strobes on either end would be directed towards the sides of the vehicle, not to the rear as displayed.
