Incredible Whale Encounter - Mother Gray Whale Lifts Her Calf Out of the Water! [HD]

Join the movement and view more stunning ocean content at oneworldoneocean.org -- A mother gray whale lifted up her calf, seemingly to help it get a better view of the excited onlookers, and we caught it all on camera. For in-depth information on the whales of San Ignacio and regulations of the area, see our blog post at www.oneworldoneocean.org The gray whales in San Ignacio Lagoon frequently approach small tourist boats, seeking the human interaction. While they could easily avoid the people, whose small boats are not allowed to closely approach whales, they actually seem to enjoy making contact. Laguna San Ignacio is on the Pacific coast of Mexico's Baja peninsula and is the destination for hundreds of gray whales, who migrate annually to the region from their feeding grounds in the Arctic. Here, where the water is shallow and warm, they give birth to their young. It lies within El Vizcaino Biosphere Reserve and is the gray whale's last undisturbed nursing and breeding ground, largely thanks to an environmental victory in 2000 that stopped the development of an industrial salt plant. Whale watching here is highly regulated, with limits on how many boats can be on the water, how long they can stay, and how close they can get; rather than closely approaching the whales, they must idle their engine and wait for the whales to approach the vessel, which is a common occurrence.

Science Bulletins: Whales Give Dolphins a Lift

Many species interact in the wild, most often as predator and prey. But recent encounters between humpback whales and bottlenose dolphins reveal a playful side to interspecies interaction. In two different locations in Hawaii, scientists watched as dolphins "rode" the heads of whales: the whales lifted the dolphins up and out of the water, and then the dolphins slid back down. The two species seemed to cooperate in the activity, and neither displayed signs of aggression or distress. Whales and dolphins in Hawaiian waters often interact, but playful social activity such as this is extremely rare between species. The latest Bio Bulletin from the Museum's Science Bulletins program presents the first recorded examples of this type of behavior. Visitors to AMNH may view the video in the Hall of Biodiversity until February 9, 2012. Science Bulletins is a production of the National Center for Science Literacy, Education, and Technology (NCSLET), part of the Department of Education at the American Museum of Natural History. Whales Surprise Surfer Near Santa Cruz, California Beach (VIDEO)

It doesn't belong to me.!! A surfer and kayakers got quite a surprise when two humpback whales lunged out of the water and nearly came crashing down upon them near Santa Cruz, California. Barbara Roettger, the woman who shot the video, told ABC News that the group was about a quarter mile from shore when the whales surfaced. Roettger was only 20 feet away from encounter. According to ABC News, "scientists believe weather patterns have driven fish closer to shore this year and brought the feeding whales with them." The surprising encounter captured in the video is not the first one in the waters near Santa Cruz. The Associated Press reports that the US Coast Guard has been monitoring a pod of humpbacks that have come within a mile of shore looking for food. Roettger admitted that whale encounters like hers can be dangerous. "We were crazy to be out there, " she told ABC News. "You're a sitting duck, basically." Officials are concerned for human safety, especially for kayakers and boaters who try to get a closer look at the creatures. No human injuries have been reported, but "at least one sailboat was damaged this week when it struck a whale." As for the whales, many groups have spoken out against boats coming too close to the mammals. Whaling, an historically lucrative business around the world, has come under increasing scrutiny in recent decades. According to the Associated Press, Japan still catches a small number of whales annually, in a "research program opposed by ...

Stuck beneath me buried deep I hope this wasn't what you dreamt Elbows up and trying to breathe I thought you were the moon Lying sideways like you do Eyes are craters small and blue Shining brightly Looking simple and serene Talking in your sleep Say goodnight Out in the woods in the pouring rain Our telephones, well they never ring Our telephones, well they never ring I must have fallen on you
Video: First-ever albino killer whale adult spotted in wild

Courtesy: www.russianorca.com READ MORE on.rt.com A Russian research ship has spotted an extremely rare white adult orca, or killer whale, off the coast of Kamchatka for the first time in history. No one knows the reason for the whale's unusual pigmentation. The scientists identified the whale by his pure white fin, swimming together with his pod, or family, all of which have the standard black and white coloration. He has been given the nickname Iceberg, and appears to be behaving normally.

World's Biggest Dead Giant whale Shark Found Near Karachi Pakistan Sea 7th Feb 2012

Hundreds of people gathered at a fish harbor in Pakistan's city Karachi on Tuesday to see a 40-feet long dead fish, a sight uncommon in the country during the past many years. The giant whale shark washed ashore on Tuesday but according to media reports it was spotted unconscious 10 days ago some 150 kilometers away from the fishery. A video of Geo News about the dead giant fish is available here. According to this video some fishermen had gone out fishing on Tuesday and had found the dead fish and brought it to Karachi Fish Harbor. The dead whale shark was lifted off the water with the help of more than two cranes, after earlier attempts had failed. In July 2010 a 17-foot whale shark was found on the shores of Hawksbay in Karachi, but Tuesday's fish was certainly more than double in size and weight. Later in the evening the Express Tribune newspaper reported that dead shark was sold at Rs 1.7 million (around $18888). The report also reads: "Two cranes were called in to fish the dead whale shark out of the water, which was approximately40 to 50-feet long and six-feet wide. Both cranes failed to pull out the fish and were sent back as at least three more cranes were required to carry out the task."

Dramatic 24-hour Gray Whale Rescue off Laguna Beach, CA

IMPORTANT NEW INFO: WEBSITE LISTED AT END OF VIDEO SHOULD READ WWW.TheCaretakers.org. Capt. Dave and his wife, Gisele, were headed to dinner with friends Friday evening at 5:30 PM when they received a call from one of their whale watching boats that a whale with a huge amount of gillnet wrapped around its tail flukes had been spotted. They quickly abandoned their plans and headed to Dana Point Harbor where they met up with volunteer members of Capt. Dave's crew, Tom Southern, Mark Tyson and Steve Plantz and headed out in their whale watching boat to see the entangled whale and attempt to help it before it got dark. After getting permission from National Marine Fisheries Service they quickly attached a buoy with a strobe light to the whale in the hopes they might be able to stay with the whale through the night and begin the disentanglement process in the morning. Plans went temporarily awry around 9 PM when the whale somehow managed to break free of the buoy and light and the crew members were now unable to follow the whale in the dark. Knowing that this whale was in serious trouble and that it would be very unlikely that it would ever be seen again they made the decision to try the impossible and attempt to attach another buoy on the whale in the dark. With the engines shut off and listening for the whale in the dark, and with only a small flashlight for lighting, in what Capt. Dave called their 'first miracle', they were able to relocate the whale and re-attach the buoy ...
