Microscopic simulation of the infamous traffic jam after the start of the Swedish Vasaloppet cross-country ski race. Every skier is simulated individually. By such simulations, new options for the operations of this mass event can be simulated before implementing them. For example, would a staggered wave start instead of a simultaneous start help? If so, how to optimize the sizes and starting times of the starting blocks? See www.movsim.org. Notice that the lane changes in congested situations are not yet very realistic (stuck skiers at the boundaries). I participated in the Vasaloppet 2012 race, and, now, I know why: There are no tracks in the tapered zones before the bottlenecks! This will be made more realistic in the next months
