"Endless Love" is a song written by Lionel Richie and originally recorded as a duet between Richie and fellow soul singer Diana Ross. In this ballad, the singers declare their "endless love" for one another. It was covered by soul singer Luther Vandross with R&B singer Mariah Carey and also by country music singer Kenny Rogers. The song also was featured in the movies "Beethoven" and "Happy Gilmore." Billboard has named it the greatest song duet of all time. Walter Afanasieff produced Luther Vandross and Mariah Carey's cover of the song for Vandross' Epic Records-released album Songs, and it is known for being Carey's first "high-profile" duet (an earlier duet, "I'll Be There," was with the then-unknown background singer Trey Lorenz). At the 1995 Grammy Award's, the song was nominated in the new category of Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal, losing to "Funny How Time Slips Away" by Al Green and Lyle Lovett. Columbia Records later included the song on Carey's compilation album Greatest Hits (2001) and then again on her next compilation album, The Ballads (2008). It was released as the second single from Songs in 1994.

In the seven albums (eight, counting a 1989 best-of package) that he has released in the last decade, Luther Vandross has established himself as Smokey Robinson's successor in building a personalized pop-soul loveland around beautiful singing. Because his extraordinarily rich voice, which straddles the line between tenor and baritone, is much more operatic than Robinson's, the environment he creates around himself is more luxurious. It is a lavishly appointed, secular cathedral of soft lights and sweet music in which he presides as a high priest of romance while his ever-present female backup singers serve as ceremonial acolytes. Power of Love, with its even mixture of ballads and uptempo songs, follows the successful format that Vandross began in 1981 with Never Too Much. Although Vandross has largely ignored the changing trends in pop-soul music, the new album takes into account the ascendancy of New Jack Swing's spikier beats and macho bluster. Those spikes propel several cuts, including the album's title song, written by Vandross and his regular collaborator Marcus Miller and paired with the Sandpebbles' 1967 hit "Love Power." At once lush and propulsive, the medley strikes a thrilling balance between assertion and reverie. As on each of his previous records, Vandross confers his blessing on a vintage pop ballad by expanding it into a dreamy romantic suite. Singer. He became famous for his soulful, romantic ballads and his many collaborations with such stars as Dionne Warwick, Whitney Houston and Janet Jackson. Beginning his career singing background vocals for Richard Marx and Chaka Khan, he was discovered by David Bowie, who overheard him singing his song "Young Americans," and had him make a recording of the song. His debut solo album "Never Too Much," released in 1981, became a huge success. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s he was considered the dominant vocalist on the R&B charts, with hits that included "How Many Times Can We Say Goodbye" and "Endless Love." Luther Vandross won four Grammy Awards in the best male R&B performance category, in 1990 for the single "Here and Now," in 1991 for his album "Power of Love," in 1996 for "Your Secret Love." His other hit albums include "Superstar," "Give Me The Reason" and "Love Won't Let Me Wait." On April 16, 2003, he suffered a stroke and lapsed into a coma. He came out of the coma in June and, after a brief recovery, he released his last album "Dance With my Father." The album went on to win four Grammys in 2004. In 2005, he was nominated for a Soul Train Music Award for a duet with Beyonce with the song "The Closer I Get To You." The effects of the stroke eventually led to his death at age 54.
