A clip from the Egyptian film "Salamah", released in 1945, in which Umm Kulthum أم كلثوم gives a virtuoso performance of the song "Ain el ochak saalouni". Affectionately known as the 'Star of the East', Kulthum is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most enduring popular singers of the 20th Century. Her career as a film glamour-puss was limited to appearances six Egyptian productions in the period between 1936 and 1947; "Salamah" was the fifth of these. She then abandoned film altogether in order to concentrate exclusively on performing live. Umm Kulthum's 1975 funeral in Cairo attracted over 4 million mourners, and descended into pandemonium when the crowd seized and made off with her coffin. A quarter of a century after her death Kulthum's recordings continue to sell about a million copies a year - consistently out-charting many present-day middle-eastern music superstars.

Leila Mourad's ليلى مراد pyjama-clad co-star in this clip from the 1949 film "Ghazal al banat" is clearly overcome by her ability to play the guitar without the need for plucking the strings, as she alluringly croons "El hob gameel" الحب جميل (Love is Beautiful) across the rooftops of central Cairo. Mourad was in fact one of Egypt's most popular filmstars during the 1930s and 40s. She was of Jewish parentage, and converted to Islam against the wishes of her family in order to marry Anwar Wagdi - who she subsequently divorced and remarried on two further occasions. She appears to have had something of a professional rivalry with Umm Kulthum; despite being named as the "official singer of the Egyptian revolution", in 1953, Mourad suddenly withdrew from public life shortly afterwards - to be replaced by Kulthum.
