A Jesuit's Tin Whistle Lesson: Week One

The first lesson in a do-it-yourself course in learning to play traditional Irish music on the tin whistle. READ THIS: When I say "F" it means F#. When I say C, with all fingers off, it means C#. I'm sorry that this has confused so many. www.tinwhistler.blogspot.com

I found my tinwhistle (what was lost is now found) so I decided to record a bit of a tune. I can't recall the name of the second one; it seemed to flow out of the first fairly well.

Tin Whistle: Two Jigs and Reel

In keeping with my attempt to upload at least one video per week, I submit this. The first tune I learned many years ago - it's entitled Willie Coleman's. The second tune, "Wheels of the World" is another old tune. Tom Hastings, my teacher, modified the ending so that that the transition to the reel - "The Rainy Day" - would be smooth.

Cooley's Reel played on a Clare Whistle in D. This whistle has been slightly tweaked by removing the rough edges from the end of the tube that fits in the mouthpiece and blocking up the gap below the wind way. The photos were taken this morning when I was setting up to do the recording.

Learn Irish Whistle, Flute, Song, Fiddle, Bodhrán, Bouzouki or Concertina from the comfort of your own home, at a pace you are comfortable with, and at a time that suits you. Mikie's Masterclass: Piping Technique for the Whistle This course is an abundant study of technique, packed with bounces, cranns, rolls, double rolls, trills, backward stitches, open backward stitches, backward rolls and triplets! It is not only for the whistler but is relevant to the flautist and the piper too. Throughout the series of nine lessons, Mikie largely focuses on the repertoire of Seamus Ennis, the great Irish piper, singer and folk collector (1919-1982). The beauty of Mikie's classes is that they are relevant for ANY level of playing. He teaches the bare melody of each tune slowly, phrase by phrase before giving a lesson on advanced technique and how to create the 'bubbles' and 'crunches' within the tune in question. This course is complete with a 'technique bank', that is a page given at the end of the course cataloguing all the new techniques introduced in the course. This is a hauntingly beautiful tune. Will plays Muir Eireann on the whistle. "Muir Eireann" is Irish Gaelic for "The Irish Sea." Irish Flute Tin Whistle - The Rainy Day - Bb Whistle

Just something I did a quite few months ago as a test. Ack... my timing is all over the place... I've got better since. Well some at least. :-D I had forgot all about it until I came across it again just now so here it is. Hmmm... it was some time ago...my hair was still rather short! I took the tune setting from a recording by the well know Liam O'Maonlai from his Rian album. The Rainy Day seems to be a common enough tune and I have heard now many different variations of it. About this whistle. You'll hear people say this and that about Generation "cheapie" whistles. While there can be some issues from the factory they are generally just fine. I find the Bb nickel particularly fun to play. :-)

Harvest Home / Boys of Bluehill (tin whistle, guitar)

I recently discovered my passion for playing hornpipes so here is "The Harvest Home" followed by "The Boys of Bluehill". I have a lot of fun playing these tunes. Now the usual excuses: ;) We made two takes and although in the other I don't make all the mistakes that I make in this one, somehow I find this one a bit more enjoyable. Moreover I apologize for not making variations (to decrease repetitiveness), but I started playing these tunes only recently. My brother doesn't know what guitar backing technique should be used for hornpipes so he made up some neat strumming, as you can see... tin whistle pennywhistle penny whistle irish whistle celtic whistle hornpipes hornpipe celt irish traditional music itm trad tinwhistle pennywhistle harvest home boys of bluehill blue hill

Seriously. It is the first time (I learned the song just for this video). And it will probably be the last time I play Irish music... So, for those of you who have been asking for a video of me playing... here is something. Not a great representation because I'm not actually a whistle player, but it's the only instrument I really have with me right now, so you'll have to wait!
