The classic Svea 123 Climber backpacking stove. This is the pre-R model with the angled valve stem and is no longer in production. The R model was introduced in 1974 and has a horizontal valve stem to accomodate the internal cleaning needle. The first 123 stoves were manufactured in 1955. Aside from the change to the valve stem they have remained unchanged and are still made under the Brunton label.

I've used this stove for years and even after trying modern equivalents, I still come back to it. Simple in design and operation, it has never failed to cook my food in any weather condition. 100% Brass construction makes it nearly indestructible, but at 19 ozs. in weight it is comparable to modern white gas stoves (and more reliable). You can find Svea 123s used at yard and estate sales, antique shops, auction sites, etc. Or you can still buy them brand new for a reasonable price. This stove will last for decades and requires virtually no maintenance other than replacing an o-ring in the fuel cap every few years. It's an outstanding piece of gear. BTW. Originally produced by AB Max Sievert. The Svea name was purchased by Optimus in 1969. Optimus redesigned the Svea 123 to include a self cleaning needle. The version with the cleaning needle is the Svea 123R. The Svea 123R is still produced today, the only stove from that era still in production. The Svea 123/123R is perhaps the most popular backpacking stove ever. This demonstration is of an original "slant valve" Svea 123 of the type produced in the 1960's.

I've had this stove for twenty-five years. Quarter century and still going strong. Nothing has broken and no parts have ever been replaced. The design is simplicty itself and it is a well deserved cult classic. If you have one you grow to love it and keep coming back to it. Even though it weighs a little more than some modern designs, it packs really small and has a bomb proof reliablity. When your bivi-ing far from home that reliablity is what counts. This is the "R" model which has a built in nozzle cleaner to clear any soot build up. If you run it on Coleman fuel/petroleum spirit (white gas to Americans) I find this is never a problem anyway. It will run on unleaded petrol but then things do get messy and you have to clean out the tubes after a few months use. The easiest way to do this is by soaking the parts in petrol - the valve key is actually the spanner for taking the stove apart. I recently purchased a heavily used SVEA 123 stove off eBay for about $30. In this video I show you how I restored it to new condition. The stove was initially charred black with soot and tarnish. Using some basic tools, a mild acid bath, and some simichrome polishing paste, (and a six-pack of beer) I gradually brought it back to a vibrant shine. This stove will cost you over $100 brand new, but if you're willing to put in some elbow grease you can own one of these awesome stoves for a fraction of that cost in nearly new condition.

I made a coke can or soda can stove and wanted to compare it with a trangia SVEA swedish military burner. the coke can burner performed better in terms of POWER output but lacks the option of heat control that you get with a trangia and simmer ring. I had a think about it when i made my coke can stove and decided to more or less copy the trangia so it's about the same height and most important of all it has the double wall design and a wick between the walls like the trangia. the wick is key. I carry and use both, picking whichever is better for what im doing at the time: coke can burner is best for boiling up to one liter of water because it is faster than the trangia due to faster warm up and higher POWER output. If im boiling more than 1L, its very windy or if i want to simmer what im cooking then i use the trangia for its heat control with the simmer ring and its larger fuel capacity. "Penny stoves" with no double wall are a COMPLETE WASTE OF TIME! they are very difficult to get warm and impossible to get warm if it's very windy. you need a double wall design to make it effective. A double wall design will work without a wick but will warm up faster with a wick (made out of a cotton J-cloth, old T-shirt or something or fibreglass). check en.wikipedia.org for more info about the beverage can stove.

Just showing how you can tell the difference between an Optimus SVEA 123 and a 123R. They are both great stoves and I'll post a review in the future. But in case you are buying a used one, this video will help you be sure of what you're getting. The 123R model replaced the original 123 sometime in the early 1970s and is still being produced today.

Yes, you might call this a history lesson trying to be a game. I would not blame you for doing so and understand if you do not want to watch this LP for that reason. I, however, choose to see this game as a fun, albeit somewhat old and therefor simple strategy game with lots of flavor text, most of which I find interesting and so might you too. This game focuses on Scandinavian history ca. 1471 up until I believe somewhere in the 19th century. Based around the historical events of Sweden. The game contains many, for Sweden, important historical figures and events which shaped the country into what it is today. This will be the Pilot episode to gauge if there is any interest what so ever, in me doing this LP. As long as at least one other person will watch these, I'll keep going, but if this turns out to be a bad idea, I'll just scrap it all together and start let's playing something else. I'd also like to state that for some reason, the game audio was not picked up by my recording software, as you may well hear. I don't know why, but if there is any interest in me continuing this LP, I'll play around with it and it should be fixed for the next episode.

1st lighting of the Svea 123r. Just filled with fuel so the internal wick is still a little dry, thus the pulsing flame. I let the wick soak in fuel for 2 hours and then re-lit the stove. Resulting in a more steady flame.

ABBA fans, here is the rare unreleased ABBA recording of "Svea Svea". As mentioned in "Abba for the record", the recording was started in July, 1971, with "dummy" Swedish lyrics. ABBA never finished the song, or wrote proper lyrics for it. In 1974 ABBA simply erased their main lead vocal, leaving Agnetha and Frida's backing vocals,and their guitarist Rutger Gunnarsson simply added his lead vocal. It was released as Polar 1188, which puts it between the Swedish version of Waterloo 45, and the English version 45. The 45 is credited on the label to Rutger and the "Kvartetten Bröderna Brothers Trio" (The brother brother's quartet trio) along with the "Viggsö Hafsartilleriregemente" (Viggsö Sea Artillery Regiment). This is an "in-joke" because ABBA and Stig had summer-houses on Viggsö island. Enjoy this rare treat by Rutger & ABBA!
