This is a picture slide show of making my next knife. I started this one in spring 2010 and finished in November 2010 (I didn't have much time during the summer to work on it). Hardening/Tempering process 1. Normalizing Make the blade red hot and let it air cool down. Repeat this 3 times. 2. Hardening Heat the blade to non-magnetic and quench it in warmish oil (I use motor oil). Let it sit in oil for 10 minutes, and cool down. Repeat this, also, 3 times. 3. Tempering Clean the blade so you can see bare metal. Hold the blade over a slim fire with sharp edge up, and watch the colors forming. Tang should be dark brown/black (the most tempered), back of the blade should be blue/purple, and cutting edge should be bronze color.
