
***Remembering Master Ghulam Haider*** A great name in music in the history of the subcontinent. One of his biggest achievements was the discovery of two of the most popular female singers the subcontinent has ever produced, Lata Mangeshkar and our own Madam Noor Jehan. Master Ghulam Haider started his career in the 1930's and went on to achieve tremendous fame, popularity and respect in the times to come in the field of his choosing. His first film as a music composer, "Suvarg ki seehi" by Syed Imtiaz Ali Taj did not do well. Then came Punjabi film "Gul Bakaoli" by Seth Dilsukh M. Pancholi in 1938, It was a film in which a song "Shala Javanian Manein", by a ten year old Noor Jehan took Punjab y storm. But the film which could be named as being instrumental in shaping and lifting Master Ghulam Haider's careers was undoubtedly "Khazanchi". Its music changed the period of the Bengali musicians of Bombay and Calcutta. They were forced to adapt to the modern times after Khazanchi. After some time Syed Shaukat Husaain Rizvi made "Khandaan" in which Madam Noor Jehan appeared as a heroine for the first time. In this film, Master Ghulam Haider's music reached new heights as almost all the songs created waves in the subcontinent. Songs like "Mere ammi ka raaj bhala", "Panchi urh ja", "Merey liye jahan mein" were on everybody's lips in those days. And so, the success story continued.
