UK links to al Shabaab grow as global conference looms To see more go to www.youtube.com Follow us on Facebook (goo.gl or Twitter (www.twitter.com As Somali piracy refuses to go away, why does the international community seem powerless to stop it? Despite occasional shows of strength, local Somali fishermen believe that maybe they don't really want to. "If they were serious about tackling piracy they would have solved it ages ago", argues the Somali coastguard. For them it is obvious: the Western ships have reasons other than pirates for wanting to patrol these waters. They believe the Somali seas have become a playground for Western navies to test arms, protect illegal fishery or just polish up their international image. A predominance of large warships seem to support their claims. "These vessels are enormous; we have small maneuverable boats, we can get away fast", one pirate tells us. July 2011

Face to face with a Somali pirate.

Very few of the Somali-based pirates who plague the Indian Ocean have been brought to justice, partly as a result of the lack of government in Somalia. But several are being held at Hargeisa prison in Somaliland - an internationally unrecognised state which broke away from Somalia in 1991. One Somali pirate serving six years in prison told the BBC's Simon Reeve that he thought the piracy was justified even though it has become a multi-million dollar criminal industry and there have been cases of hostages and ship's crew being killed.

Private security will get your shipping past those pirate infested waters off Africa. Why aren't all companies doing this? Very effective ship to skiff communications. Maritime law trumps all other laws in international waters. Why would you not turn-around when the warning shots were hitting the water 3/4 mile out? The high-seas criminals had their chance, and they chose their fate. The ocean is a harsh mistress. (Indian ocean off 120 miles off Somalia)

Royal Marines capture Somali pirates 16.01.11

The Royal Navy has captured 13 Somali pirates on a boat in the Indian Ocean. Royal Marines were part of a NATO-led combined counter-piracy force which intercepted a suspect dhow operating in shipping lanes off the Somali coast. In a dawn operation, RFA (Royal Fleet Auxiliary) Fort Victoria joined the USS Carney to try to establish the identity of the boat. They used a Royal Navy Lynx Mark 8 helicopter with Royal Marine maritime snipers who warned the suspects to stop. When it did not stop, Royal Marines in speedboats boarded the vessel and 13 Somali pirates surrendered. They were found on board with a selection of weapons, the Ministry of Defence said. Defence Secretary Philip Hammond said: "This operation off the coast of Somalia is a clear demonstration of Britain's ability to tackle piracy that threatens our interests. "The Royal Navy and Royal Marines are playing a crucial role in securing and protecting international sea lanes that are vital to global trade." Captain Gerry Northwood, commander of the counter piracy operation on RFA Fort Victoria, said: "This was a well-executed operation by Nato forces to locate a known Somali pirate group that was operating in international shipping lanes of the Indian Ocean. "An effective boarding was safely executed by the Royal Marine boarding team based in RFA Fort Victoria and this has safely neutralised the effect of the pirate mothership. "This firm and positive action will also send a clear message to other Somali pirates ...

The Pirates of Somalia - November 2008

Since the hijack of the Sirius Star on November 17 the world has focused on Somali piracy. In this report, we talk with pirates and those who live in the towns nearby, to uncover how and why they do it. 'We climbed aboard and demanded the captain stop', tells one pirate calmly. 'When we got our money...we released them'. Pirates claim that their country has had no effective government for 20 years and piracy is one of the few ways to make money. In Garowe, where much of the money ends up, they are applauded. 'I very much support the pirates, nobody else gives us anything.' But in Eyl, pirates are seen as armed youths after 'easy money'. RUSSIAN NAVY CAPTURES SOMALI PIRATES

RUSSIAN NAVY CAPTURES SOMALI PIRATES How about that - The Russians captured the Pirates, tied them up, put them on the boats, then set them all on fire - puff no more Pirates! This video shows Russian Navy commandos on a Somalian pirate ship shortly after the pirates had captured a Russian oil tanker. The Euro Union navy that patrols these waters would not interfere because they feared there could be casualties. All explanations are in Russian with a single exception of when a wounded pirate says something in English and the Russian soldier says "This is not a fishing boat". All conversations between the commandos are in Russian. If you don't understand Russian, the pictures speak for themselves. The soldiers freed their compatriots and the tanker. The Russian Navy Commandos moved the pirates back to their own (pirate) ship, searched the pirate ship for weapons and explosives and then they left the ship and exploded it with all remaining pirates hand-cuffed to it. The commandos sank the pirate ship along with the pirates and without any court proceedings, lawyers etc. That is, they used the anti-piracy laws of the 18th and 19th centuries where the captain of the rescuing ship has the right to decide what to do with the pirates. Usually, they were hanged. I would think from now on, Russian ships will not be targets for Somali pirates.

NATO - Taking on the pirates

The Danish warship HMDS Absalon has freed 12 hostages and taken on board 16 suspected pirates off the coast of Somalia. It is a successful end to their six-month deployment under NATO's Operation Ocean Shield. But Denmark now faces a dilemma. Unless a country in the region can be persuaded to take them ashore and prosecute them, the suspects will have to be set free again in Somalia.

SEAL Team 6 Rescues Hostages from Somalia Pirates

Navy SEAL Team 6 rescues Jessica Buchanan and Danish hostage Poul Hagen from Somali Pirates. The special forces team that swept into Somalia last night to rescue two aid workers was the elite military group called SEAL Team 6. Officially, the team's name is classified and not available to the public, technically there is no Team 6. The Tier-One counter terrorism force similar to the Army's elusive Delta group, Team 6's missions rarely make it to paper much less the newspaper. Of course, all that changed following the May 2 raid at Osama bin Laden's compound when Team 6 became front page news. The members of Team 6 are all black operatives. They exist outside military protocol, engage in operations at the highest level of classification and often outside the boundaries of international law. The development of SEAL Team 6 was in response to the 1980 rescue attempt of American hostages held in Iran after the US Embassy takeover by the Iranian government regime.
