Based on the book "The Tuesday Dog" by Jack Stoneley (retitled "Scruffy" in the US), itself loosely based on a true story, this was a three-part 1980 ABC Weekend Special produced by Ruby-Spears Enterprises. The story follows a stray puppy who is forced to deal with surviving on her own after she and her mother are abandoned. It was directed by Charles A. Nichols and written by Sheldon Stark. The special is fairly faithful to the book, though there are several changes. Firstly, the dogs now talk, but they retain most of their animal qualities. Scruffy herself now resembles Lady the Cocker Spaniel from "Lady and the Tramp" rather than the scruffy black-and-white mongrel that lived over 35 years ago. Several characters are added that were not in the book. Most of the content in the book is toned down except for one scene, which will come later. One thing's for sure, though, that for a TV special, it doesn't pull its punches. For those lucky enough to have owned the VHS or seen it on ABC back in 1980, now is the time to relive your childhood. If not, I hope you enjoy this special nonetheless.

Scruffy the Cat was one of Boston's biggest rock acts of the 80s. They toured nonstop for several years bringing their brand of rootsy rock 'n roll to all corners of the US and parts of Canada. This video was shot at the now-defunct Rat club in Kenmore Square.

Tibbles gets a surprising amount of money here; enough to pay for groceries! Needless to say, in the book (and in real life if he had existed) he didn't receive quite as much money; the special simplifies his life somewhat. The attempted mugging is also not in the book. Here's the scene where Ruby-Spears takes a bold risk in actually being more disturbing than the book. Tibbles dies peacefully under the bridge, and his body is discovered days after his death. Still very sad, though. Here we also meet Butch and his pack. Butch in the book is an English Bull Terrier, whereas here he resembles a Pit Bull mix. Collie was a Border Collie instead of a Rough Collie. Sadly for her, she was deaf as well as maternally craving. Sam was a German Shepherd instead of a scruffy mutt, with a particularly memorable back-story that was abandoned in this special because of his breed change. The only character here that has not been changed is Randy the Boxer, although he is finally given a name. Finally, Catlan and his dog Caesar are two additional characters that are introduced here.

There is always something magical about this time of year, the promise of something unexpected. This year, that promise was fulfilled in a litter of scruffy puppies. I had agreed to take in Jackson Brown and Sprint, two border collies in a shelter in Alabama. At the last minute, on 10/18/09 the shelter asked if I would also take a litter of puppies. If not, they would be euthanized since they were not weaned and they didn't have the staff to bottle-feed them. Good grief, what would you say? Yeah, me too! And so arrived on my doorstep the Scruffy puppies, as I came to call them. Soooo tiny, so fragile. We fed them mushy puppy food with formula, we gave them meds, we dewormed them, we loved them, we did all we knew how, but sadly two of them didn't make it. But those that did? Oh my, they're beautiful! Four girls, two boys. Breed? I don't know. There was obviously more than one father involved ~ did you know that littermates can have different dads? But if I had to guess... hmmm. Most of them look like they have a touch of basset in them ~ longer bodies and ears, turne out front legs. I see Australian Shepherd in some of those faces too. A couple look like maybe a bit of Springer Spaniel. And one I really do believe is part Schnauzer! Whoever adopts these puppies has to promise me that they'll <b>...</b>

Possibly the biggest character change is in Solo the Scottish Terrier. In the book, he was a Cairn Terrier with major socialization problems. He would go so far as to fight any dog that got in his way, and Butch was possibly the only dog who knew how to deal with him. Here, he's toned down to just being a grumpy dog who hates everybody. In the most drastic change from book to special, the subplot with Catlan and Caesar as villains is completely new. Do I need to mention the original has virtually no villains?

Now for the final comments. All I can reveal about the book's end is that Collie does not end up in the animal shelter. Why so? You'll have to read to find out! Jack Stoneley was himself the newspaper columnist who visited the shelter and wrote the article about the black-and-white puppy in the Tuesday cage. In this part, we have the first truly infamous scene, which a number of people have compared to "Bambi". While Scruffy is lucky enough here to escape the incident without injury, in the book her paw was bleeding by this point. But not before we meet a new character: Terry Tomcat. He isn't essential to the plot, and he's only there to provide comic relief in an otherwise dark story. Another new character is an unnamed mouse, who provides the advice the book's Scruffy never got.

My wife and I are committee chairs for a pioneer trek reenactment for our local LDS church this year. We will have around 200 youth and 100 adults going. We will be pulling handcarts, dutch oven cooking, wearing era clothing and sleeping under shelters we build for a few days. My neighbor's dog enjoyed playing in the water basin for my trees just after I had filled it. Here we come to the third infamous scene in the special: the fight between Caesar and Butch. Even though Caesar is a new character, this plot element is just as important here as it was in the book. Butch actually fought another dog that we never see (or read, in this case) again, but the implications of the fight remain the same: Butch is badly injured and all the dogs in his pack, even solitary Solo, help him get better. My only complaints about the fight scene is how bad the animation really is and how Caesar just wimps off at the last minute. Then again, it's not surprising since it was made on such a low budget. I shall also have to apologise for the skip at 9:40. If there's anything to blame, it's my VCR.
