Amanita muscaria - the fly agaric mushroom, Wolfgang Bauer interview (excerpt)

Today we'll be discussing Amanita muscaria - the Fly-agaric mushroom. Why is Amanita so prevalent in folkloric, mythical and religious iconography? Why do Amanita mushrooms seem less ergonomic than other entheogens, and if they are less ergonomic, could they have played as prevalent a role in these ancient religions as modern scholars claim? Is there a special method or technique used to gain a fuller experience from the Amanita? My guest is German author Wolfgang Bauer, co-author and co-editor of Der Fliegenpilz - The Fly-Mushroom: Dream Cults, March Magic, Mythical Intoxication. Wolfgang Bauer, a German psychologist, who has studied optical illusions by Prof. Rausch at the JW Goethe-Universität in Frankfurt/ Main, is editor of Sergius Golowins classic treatise on witch herbs and magic mushrooms (Magie der verbotenen Märchen, Hamburg 1973), which became a cult-book in the Seventies and which was secretly copied in the then communistic eastern part of Germany and distributed in the hippie-underground there. Wolfgang Bauer is co-editor of integration - journal for mind-moving plants and culture, editor and co-author of Der Fliegenpilz - Traumkult, Märchenzauber, Mythenrausch (Aarau 2000). His collection of objects relating to the fly-agaric has been exhibited by the Karl Ernst Osthaus-Museum (Hagen) several times in Museums in Europe. www.amazon.de astore.amazon.com Hear the full interview at: www.gnosticmedia.com

Sacred Spain: Art & Belief in the Spanish World - Trailer

Sacred Spain: Art & Belief in the Spanish World - Trailer imamuseum.org October 11, 2009-January 3, 2010 Allen Whitehill Clowes Gallery in Wood Pavilion The first exhibition to examine the religious visual culture of 17th-century Spain and Latin America will open at the IMA on October 11, 2009. Sacred Spain: Art and Belief in the Spanish World brings to life the challenges faced by visual artists such as El Greco, Francisco Zurbarán, Alonso Cano, Franciso Ribalta, Bartolomé Esteban Murillo, Juan de Valdes Leal, Juan Correa, Cristobal Villalpando and others, who were charged with the creative task of making religious imagery that was useful, truthful and moving. The exhibition will feature 70 works—including paintings, polychrome sculpture, metalwork and books, many of which have never before been seen in the United States—that not only illustrate religious iconography and allegory, but also bring to light the significant role of the artist in 17th-century Spain.

Debre Damo

Monastery of Debre Damo in the Tigray region. The video is from a documentary on french television (France 3). José-Marie Bel shows us the wonderful monastery of Debre Damo. The monastery of Debre Damo was built during the VI century, it is located on a mountain (almost 2300 meters above sea level) and 600 monks live there. It is accessible only by rope and women are not allowed in. At 2:56, the cross carved in the rock is venerated by the monks. (You can notice a similarity with the Cross of the Knights Templar, learn more about it in the video "Axumite origins of the Knights Templar cross". Ethiopian traditions claims that Abuna Aregawi, one the Nine Saints, founded the monastery. At 4:35, you can see two doors leading to a room called Holy of Holies, the monks are the only ones allowed in it and it is used for ceremonies. At 4:48, a typical Ethiopian painting representing the Trinity. At 5:35, José-Marie Bel explains that Ethiopia is the only African country predominately Christian, that was not Christianized by European colonisers, Ethiopia actually built its own Christianity. José-Marie Bel organizes exhibitions about Ethiopia, more specifically about its heritage and its religious iconography. He founded "l'Espace de la Reine de Saba" and you can visit his website (only in french): www.espacereinedesaba.org

Venus Ink Painting

Now that I have my own flat I can sit down and do some painting. This is a little something I did randomly. I sketched it out in pencil first and then painted with my little pots of ink. This is the kind of art work I make, I can't help but make it this way, it's just how it comes naturally. I wish I could produce something more sophisticated but at the same time I like that "folk" look of "outsider" art. I am a big fan of symbolism and Medieval art, very big fan of religious iconography, and that's hopefully something you can see in my work. I'm also a big fan of early 20th century illustrators, particularly Alphonse Mucha. Can you see little hints of that?

Tauba Auerbach and Kenhinde Wiley at Deitch Projects

James Kalm drifts into Soho to kick off the new season with a pair of highly anticipated exhibitions. Tauba Auerbachs HERE AND NOW/AND NOWHERE presents five bodies of work that are all related to the duality of space, the here, and, time, the now. Illusionistic paintings are contrasted with Auerglass a custom made pipe organ. Kenhinde Wiley explores the photographic medium with Black Light a series of digitally manipulated photos that continues his studies of young black males. Using various lighting sources, decorative backgrounds, gestures and poses that relate to medieval religious iconography, Wiley creates images that balance precariously between Boys in the Hood and GQ Magazine.

Slideshow of Michigan Tablets

ArtBulla.com. Very small sampling of tablet stones discovered in upper penninsula of Michigan between 1859 and 1919. This collection (Soper Savage) has over 30000 artifacts but there are 30 others , more being discovered all the time. Knowledge of these suppressed by liberal scientific atheistic (antiChrist) establishment because of religious iconography on slate tablets. Slandered as being fabrcated despite impossiblity of huge numbers of artifacts and language analysis by Henrietta Mertz and others proving not possible to be fabricated.

First Delphic Hymn - Christodoulos Halaris (Music of Ancient Greece)

The Delphic Hymns are two musical compositions from Ancient Greece, which survive in substantial fragments. They are dated c.138 BC and 128 BC. The earlier of them, the First Delphic Hymn, is the earliest unambiguous surviving example of notated music from anywhere in the western world. The First Delphic Hymn was written to Apollo. It was found inscribed in stone in Delphi in 1893 by a French archaeologist; all that is known about its composer is that it was written by an Athenian, around 138 BC, since the part of the inscription giving the name of the composer is difficult to read. The Second Delphic hymn is slightly more recent, and has been dated to precisely 128 BC; evidently it was first performed in the same year. The name of the composer has also survived, in a separate inscription: Limenius. The occasion of the later hymn was the Pythian Festival, and the earlier hymn was probably written for the boys choir at the Pythian Games in 138 BC. Sometimes billed as "Chris Halaris," Hellen composer and scholar Christodoulos Halaris is a leading expert on the study and reconstruction of ancient Hellenic and Byzantine music. Her turned to musicology and composing after studying mathematics in Paris. Taking his cues from religious iconography and traditional popular Hellenic music, Halaris began reconstructing fragmentary old Hellenic music documents. His re-imagining of secular Byzantine music, with what Hallaris identifies as roots in Hellenic song, has met with skepticism ...

Hagia Sophia - Great Attractions (Istanbul, Turkey)

Take a tour of Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, Turkey -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats. Istanbul's famous Hagia Sophia is a classic example of Byzantine architecture. Its uniquely constructed dome is a source of interest for many. The church served as a Christian place of worship from the year 360 until the 1300s. Under the Ottoman Empire, it was converted into a mosque. As a result, the Hagia Sophia features both Christian and Muslim religious iconography. In 1934, at the start of the Turkish Republic, it was ordered to be transformed into a museum. It is now forbidden to worship openly here. The ancient and iconic Hagia Sophia has inspired similar architecture the world over.

Mystic Rose Apparition of The Virgin Mary. Real photographs.

These are 8 authentic photographs shown in a slide show. Just take a look at the many photographs I have taken deep inside hundreds of flowers and plants before you start thinking that they are anything but real. Nobody can shoot this many photographs and see the kind of things I have photographed and not be telling the truth. As to what we are looking at here, that is subjective and I for one still don't know what the heck I am looking at. But please take a look at www.alexanderblackphotography.com or alexanderblackphotography.com to go directly to the gallery with the face in the rose. If you want to see more of the before and after images from that roll, just e-mail me and I will send you more.

"Child" by Julie Roberts @ Talbot Rice Gallery

Julie Roberts' painting plays upon attraction and repulsion, utilising exquisitely painted surfaces and colour schemes against an unflinching subject matter, which has previously included crime scenes and medical apparatus. For this exhibition Roberts will show new paintings on the subject of the 'child' including: religious iconography, domestic environments and young girls' induction into domestic labour, evacuees, refugees, school rooms and familial portraiture. With these themes Roberts extends her exploration of gender, authority and visual interpretation. www.edinburghartfestival.com www.trg.ed.ac.uk

Highlight reel from Lionel Popkin's There is An Elephant in This Dance

REDCAT presents... LIONEL POPKIN: THERE IS AN ELEPHANT IN THIS DANCE May 20, 2010 - May 23, 2010 www.redcat.org Lovely. A kinetic world that unearths new dimensions... a thrilling flurry of slicing and scooping limbs... Dance Insider Playing off a comically overlarge plush elephant costume, worn in pieces or whole, this vividly imagined, adroitly executed quartet from Los Angeles dance artist Lionel Popkin looks at how an individual body can hold multiple histories and align itself with divergent cultural identities. By turns funny, uncanny and disquieting, There is An Elephant abounds with choreographic eloquence, clever direction and thematic layering: It organically elicits a set of meanings both obvious and unspoken, from the pachyderm in religious iconography to expressions of interior personal space. Popkin, an alumnus of Trisha Brown Dance Company, is joined on stage by Carolyn Hall, Ishmael Houston-Jones and Peggy Piacenza. With an original score by Robert Een. There is An Elephant in This Dance is a project of 501 (see three) Arts, which is supported in part by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors through the Los Angeles County Arts Commission. Additional funds for this performance provided by the Alma Hawkins Memorial Fund, Department of World Arts and Cultures, School of the Arts and Architecture, UCLA. Amenra - Change is always

Amenra (formed 2003 in Kortrijk, West-Flanders, Belgium) delivers dark, heavy and sludgy post-hardcore in the vein of Cult of Luna, Isis and Neurosis. Intense, noisy and gloomy almost spheric at times. Rich and textured riffs. Thunderous low tones. High impact percussion and cutthroat vocals splattered with a healthy dose of religious iconography. Coalesce into a beautiful pitch black collection of staggering proportion.
