If you're looking for a new, hip way to get around look no further. One Chinese man has invented a new bike that is sure to, well, make you laugh. Who says the wheel is round? Retired Chinese military officer Guan Baihua has created an edgy version of the traditional bicycle wheel. He's even patented his new design, in case it catches on. Guan had been mulling over the idea for years, until inspiration came quite unexpectedly. [Guan Baihua, Bicycle Inventor]: "I started thinking, can I invent a bike with a non-circular wheel? But I did not believe that I could actually do it until the end of 2006, one day I was watching television and rolling a triangular pencil and I discovered that though I was rolling it I couldn't feel my hand bumping up and down. So I started to work out how to put the shape and the bicycle together." Unlike circular wheels, these wheels have no set radius. Instead they have an unchanging diameter, so as they turn, the wheels remain at a constant height. The cyclist is protected from a bumpy ride by pivoting joints which keep the frame separate from the jolting wheels. Pushing the triangular and pentagonal wheels along the road is hard work so its fastest speed is still only a brisk walking pace. And it can be a wobbly take-off. REINVENTING Physical Education About Jake Jake Glover began his career in health and wellness almost a decade ago as a clinical exercise specialist that focused on gait training strategies for individuals recovering from stroke or brain trauma. He has published numerous articles on the use of adaptive training strategies and physiological data to improve fitness in traditional rehabilitation settings. After being inspired by a pediatric stroke victim, Jake became a certified high school physical educator eventually creating one of the first state-certified AP Anatomy and Physiology curricula in the country. The curriculum design prepared students for a nationally accredited personal training certification with a job placement program that included community wellness counseling. One of his inner-city programs utilized a high-school mentorship program to reduce the district's middle-school obesity rate by 46% over two-years and featured his award winning "Anatomy Rap." While many who use digital technology in education are attempting new and innovative approaches to teaching over the internet, the use of videotaped lectures is still commonplace in distance education and in open education initiatives. This video argues that the lecture a classroom technique that can be argued to be vestigial at best, even in the classroom ought to be updated rather than reproduced in the online classroom, by paying attention to the limitations and strengths of online video as a medium. My primary goal is to encourage people to think about the way that various media affect how we communicate, that there should be different pedagogical approaches online than in the classroom. It seems rather obvious, but theres also a lot of tone-deaf stuff out there. And my pet peeve is the use of recorded classroom lectures for open ed and distance learning programs.
