"That's my son. That's my baby. I really love this little boy. He's my love," said Powell's mother, Josephine. According to the family, they were inside their Southwest Miami-Dade home last Saturday when Powell, who is also called Liko, called his parents on his cell phone to let them know he was walking a block from his friend's house. On his way home, Liko said, "The police followed me." Liko said, the officer smacked him in the face with an open hand and knocked him to the ground. "His whole hand," he said. According to the police report, a Miami-Dade Police officer noticed a bulge in Liko's waistband. The officer attempted to conduct a pat down, and Powell tried to run away. "I said, 'Didn't you know he was a Down Syndrome kid?' And he said, 'No, I'm not a doctor. I don't know.' And I said, 'Well, you can see it in his face that he is a Down Syndrome kid,'" said Josephine. The bulge that Liko had on his waistband was a colostomy bag. The family said the officer pulled it from his body. "He had him by his boxers, so they took his pants off," said Liko's father, Gilberto Hernandez. "I felt helpless, because he was calling my name."

Hi all Heres a video Ive made of Running To Stand Still using footage from the film Adam and Paul (nothing to do with Mr.Clayton and Mr.McGuinness) starring Tom Murphy and Mark O'Halloran made in 2004. I chose that film because its basically about a couple of desperate heroin addicts travelling around their hometown of Dublin looking for a fix and, as we all know, RTSS is about heroin addiction and the everyday lives that are affected by it. Now dont get me wrong here, Adam and Paul is a dark comedy and the characters are capable of anything in their quest for a fix including at one point stealing from a teenage boy with Downs Syndrome! But they arent nasty criminals just 2 lost souls trying to survive their addiction. Living in Liverpool, I see these types of characters around the city everyday and they make you feel both afraid and angry. Afraid they might be off their heads and attack you and angry at them for being lazy and selfish druggies. But I guess its easy for us to judge forgetting that they are human beings with a story. And having watched this movie it has now made me think twice before judging those characters on the periphery of society as being all the same or loser smack-heads. I would recommend the movie, even though people might find the language and the Irish accent hard to follow at times and the movie itself is also very slow dont expect any Hollywood action the acting is superb and the mix of uncomfortable realism, dark humour and pathos (right up <b>...</b>

A powerful, hard-hitting commercial which highlights the daily abuse and bullying endured by people with learning disabilities was launched by the Disability Rights Commission (DRC) in cinemas across Britain on Friday, 30th March 2007. 'Nice Day' features actor Russell Ramsey, who has Down's Syndrome, and highlights the negative attitudes, verbal abuse and hostility that many people with learning disabilities face on the streets every day. Nine out of ten people with a learning disability say they have experienced harassment and bullying and a new poll, conducted by IPSOS/MORI for the DRC, found that a third of disabled adults say that they don't feel safe in their local area. 'Nice Day', directed by Paul Gay with voice over by Meera Syall, is part of the DRC's 'Are we taking the dis?' campaign, which was launched last year. The campaign aims to shine a spotlight on the deep-rooted and persistent discrimination that many disabled people face in Britain today.
