He's believed to have been kidnapped when he was just six years old. His case is a source of simmering tensions for ethnic Tibetans living in China and abroad. The 11th Panchen Lama is the second highest-ranking spiritual figure in Tibetan Buddhism, and also said by rights groups, to be the world's youngest political prisoner. Protests for his release were held on his 22nd Birthday on Monday at monasteries throughout India's northern state of Himachal Pradesh, and outside Chinese Embassies around the world. Gedhun Choekyi Nyima was taken into custody in 1995 when he was just six years old and shortly after he was given his spiritual title by Tibetan spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama. Neither he nor his family have been seen in public since. The Chinese regime then chose its own Panchen Lama, Gyaltsen Norbu, but few exiled Tibetans recognize him. In towns like India's northern hill resort of Shimla, hundreds of Tibetans marched down the streets holding candles and chanting hymns. A Tibetan Buddhist, Tsering Diki voiced her concern about alleged Chinese atrocities at the Kirti Monastery in Sichuan province, where 17 monks and 17 other Tibetans were arrested in recent weeks. In 1995 the Communist Chinese kidnapped The Panchen Lama, Gedun Choekyi Nyima from Tibet to a secluded joint in China, along with his two parents... The child was 8 years old when this abduction took place. The Communist then appointed their own Panchen Lama, Qoigyi Jabu, the son of two members of the Communist Party. The Communist refused to allow the UN from visiting with Gedun Choekyi Nyima. It is apparent the brave descendants of Mao's revolution fear religion. Gedhun Choekyi Nyima - born April 25, 1989 - is the eleventh Panchen Lama (the second highest ranking Lama after the Dalai Lama in the Gelugpa sect of Tibetan Buddhism). He was born in Lhari County, Tibet. On May 14, 1995, Gedhun Choekyi Nyima was named the 11th Panchen Lama by the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso. After he was nominated Panchen Lama, Chinese authorities had Gedhun Choekyi Nyima and his family removed from Tibet. The whereabouts of Gedhun Choekyi Nyima are unknown. Human Rights organizations claim that he and his family continue to be political prisoners, and has termed him the "youngest political prisoner in the world".

The Second World Buddhist Forum opened in the eastern Chinese city Wuxi Saturday with more than 1700 Buddhist monks and scholars from about 50 countries and regions gathering to discuss how Buddhism can contribute to building a harmonious world. The 11th Panchen Lama, Bainqen Erdini Qoigyijabu, delivered a speech in English at the forum, offering his views on building a harmonious world and urging people to do more good deeds and help others. "Sutras tell us: Good is rewarded with good, evil with evil. We should now guide and encourage people with the law of causality to serve others with good deeds," he said. "Only if we carry forward the philanthropic moral spirit, will everyone be guided to do good and not harm others; can everyone display love and mercy, benefit all sentient beings and protect the environment, so as to enable people to enjoy a harmonious and happy life," he said. He also called for achieving harmony among different Buddhist sects. "Different sects within Buddhism should respect each other and coexist in harmony," he said. "So Buddha Dharma can live on and flourish, we should foster more outstanding talent." The 19-year-old Panchen Lama also thanked the central government for its "kindly" concern for and "powerful" patronage of the forum. His Holiness Panchen Lama Gedhun Choekyi Nyima is a source of great controversy. He is considered by most to be the reincarnation of the 10th Panchen Lama. He was chosen by the Dalai Lama himself to be the 11th Panchen Lama. The Chinese government, always trying to prevent any loss of power or control in Tibet, arrested Gedhun and his family when he was only six years old. [1] He has not been seen since. The Chinese government initially claimed that they had no idea where he was and were not responsible for his disappearance. Then in 1996, the Chinese government admitted they knew where he was and claimed that his parents had wanted them to protect him. They also claimed that he was not the real 11th Panchen Lama, instead it was Gyaltsen Norbu, who was enthroned by the Chinese as the Panchen Lama on December 9, 1995. Gedhun is still recognized by most Tibetans as the true Panchen Lama and the Dalai Lama has publically denounced Norbu's enthronement. Traditionally the recognition of the Panchen Lama has always been carried out by the Dalai Lama and in turn the Panchen Lama has helped with the recognition of the Dalai Lama.
