Ovation TV | Julie Taymor

Julie Taymor's travels map her artistic innovation. As a director, costume designer and mask maker, Taymor reconciles the conventions of Western theater with folklore, rituals and myths from around the world. Born in Newton, Massachusetts in 1952, Taymor was involved in theater at an early age; she joined Boston Children's Theater and studied in Paris at L'Ecole de mime Jacques Lecoq at age 16. She traveled to Sri Lanka and India through an educational travel program, eventually enrolling at Oberlin College. While there, she joined Herbert Blau's experimental theater company and then went on to study theater traditions in Indonesia and Japan. Taymor lived in Indonesia for several years and formed a theater company that embodied the expressive use of masks, music, and puppetry. Upon her return to the United States, Taymor used these experiences to continue creating visual and theatrical productions that audiences had never encountered before. Successes include directing Stravinsky's Oedipus Rex with conductor Seiji Ozawa, Juan Darien: A Carnival Mass for which she won a Tony Award, and The Lion King which garnered two Tony Awards, including best director of a musical. In productions such as Lion King, Taymor dissuaded Disney from backing a conventional production, opting instead to transpose puppets and actors seamlessly, using high and low tech costume design, masks and puppet manipulation to create stunning transformations. Ovation TV | Dante's Inferno

Melding the seemingly disparate traditions of apocalyptic live-action graphic novel and charming Victoria-era toy theater, Dante's Inferno is a subversive, darkly satirical update of the original 14th century literary classic. Retold with the use of intricately hand-drawn paper puppets and miniature sets, and without the use of CGI effects, this unusual travelogue takes viewers on a tour of hell. And what we find there, looks a lot like the modern world. Sporting a hoodie and a hang-over from the previous night's debauchery, Dante (voiced by Dermot Mulroney) wakes to find he is lost - physically and metaphorically - in a strange part of town. He asks the first guy he sees for some help: The ancient Roman poet Virgil (voiced by James Cromwell), wearing a mullet and what looks like a brown bathrobe. Having no one else to turn to, Dante's quickly convinced that his only means for survival is to follow Virgil voyage down, down through the depths of Hell. The pair cross into the underworld and there Virgil shows Dante the underbelly of the Inferno, which closely resembles the decayed landscape of modern urban life. Dante and Virgil's chronicles are set against a familiar backdrop of used car lots, strip malls, gated communities, airport security checks, and the US Capitol. Here, hot tubs simmer with sinners, and the river Styx is engorged with sewage swimmers. Also familiar is the contemporary cast of presidents, politicians, popes and pop-culture icons sentenced to eternal ...

Ovation TV | Musician

Ken Vandermark, avant-garde improvisational jazz musician and recipient of a 1999 MacArthur Genius Grant, spends every waking moment composing, arranging and performing his music - proving in his own way that he can make a living through his passion. Common sense says you can't make a living in America playing avant-garde improvisational jazz. But Ken Vandermark does it anyway. Among musicians, Vandermark's work ethic is almost mythic. The Chicago reed player has released over 100 albums with nearly 40 ensembles, spends over eight months per year on the road, and lives every other waking moment composing, arranging, performing -- and trying to discipline his two hyperactive canines. Though Vandermark was the recipient of a 1999 MacArthur genius grant, he still spends most of his life in smoky clubs and low-budget recording studios, hoping people will plunk down hard-earned cash to hear his wholly non-commercial music. Following the artful cinéma vérité style of the internationally acclaimed Sheriff, Musician forgoes all interviews and voice-overs. It is a fly-on-the-wall time capsule that expertly captures every subtle sound and texture of this most American of art forms. The movie is part of the WORK series of documentaries by Daniel Kraus (www.workseries.com) to be released on DVD , May 27, 2008. OVATION TV, ART LIKE NEVER BEFORE. Ovation TV | MAYA LIN: An American Revolutionary

After creating the Vietnam War Memorial, Maya Lin became, at the age of twenty-one, one of America's most significant architects and designers. She was born in 1959 in Athens, Ohio, to an academic family -- her father was the Dean of Fine Arts and her mother a professor of literature at Ohio University. In Lin's senior year at Yale Univeristy, she entered the national competition with her design for the Vietnam War Memorial. Chosen from 1421 unlabeled submissions, Lin's simple black walls with the names of all dead and missing in chronological order has become the most visited monument in Washington. Lin has since designed the Civil Rights Memorial in Montgomery, Alabama, the enormous translucent clock in the ceiling of New York City's Pennsylvania Station, an ecology based installation along the Columbia River to commemorate the Lewis and Clark expedition, and the Museum of African Art in New York, along with other projects, private homes, and furniture designs.
