In Defense of an Orthophonic

Every once in a while I receive a Youtube message expressing shock (sometimes in very unkind words) that I would play my records on an old phonograph as many people assume that these old machines destroy records. I respond to these messages but I decided that it would be more convenient to post an explanation to which I could refer people. I should add that all of my remarks apply as well to the HMV/Electrola versions of the American Victor Orthophonic as there are several Youtubers who post using these machines.

Edison DD Record on Victor 10-50 Orthophonic Victrola

How does an Edison Diamond Disc sound through an Orthophonic Horn? This has been the certifiable wet dream of any serious Edison -phile. : ) While at the time there were several after market solutions available to fit an Edison compatible soundbox to a Victrola, the most convincing solution was the Brunswick Ultona soundbox, whose Edison side mimicked the construction of an Edison reproducer. Now here you have an example - an experiment of mine that I did a few years ago. I took an Ultona soundbox and made it to fit into the tonearm of an Orthophonic Victrola. Originally I started out with the Brunswick mica diaphragm, which sounded great, but exhibited some damaging resonances. So the next step was to refit the reproducer with an orthophonic diaphragm. Not the quantum leap that I expected, but it increased the treble details of the reproduction, while not doing much in terms of additonal bass response. The 1927 Victor Automatic Orthophonic Victrola 10-50 has the largest and highest fidelity horn of any home Victrola ever produced in the USA. www.youtube.com What I am playing in this demo: Edison ACOUSTIC Diamond Disc 51177-L Ritzi Mitzi - Foxtrot Dave Kaplan Melodists, an Edison Studio Band 1923.05.17NYC This side is one of the greatest sounding Edison records. RCA VICTOR NEW ORTHOPHONIC HIGH FIDELITY 4 SPEED PORTABLE RECORD PLAYER DEMONSTRATION

Hello, this is the same model RCA that was given to me by one of my parents friends daughter when I was nine years old. She was all grown up and didn't use it anymore. It was a major upgrade for a nine year old. I loved the sound quality and I had never heard bass sound from a phonograph before. My older sisters records sounded so good ! I really started buying my own records then. I played this for years and years and it never needed a thing but a needle every few years. I dug out my mom's 78's, she had not heard them in years. I learned what 1940's big band music was. Its a very large player, the model is 8-HFP-1. The 33 1/3 demo record I got from ebay. It says on the label Demonstration record for RCA Victor high fidelity Victrola Phonographs. Narration by Deems Taylor # E3-CL-4791 and is one sided. When I got older and got my first STEREO I gave this to a friend and never saw it again. But ebay brought one just like it back to me ! I still love the sound quality and love to stack a bunch of 45's and remember. I hope you enjoy it too !

The Song was composed by Gus Kahn & Walter Donaldson. The record is the original 10" Black and Gold Label Victor Orthophonic 22499 from 1930. The Victrola in an original 1925 two door Victor Orthophonic Model Credenza from late 1925. The Credenza was considered the top of the line "Flagship Model" of Victor's new Orthophonic Line of Victrolas, specifically designed to play and enhance the sound of the new Electrically recorded Records that were introduced earlier that Year. Notice the new and short-lived Trademark Logo for Victor's new 1925 Orthophonic Models which is shown briefly in the Video. Victor dealers complained that this was too much of a drastic change from the original "Dog" Trademark displayed on the earlier Victrolas, and was quickly changed back to a more traditional Victor Type on all future Orthophonic Victrola models.

Orthophonic Victrola-Western Electric Demo Record - Victor 19571

Jack Shilkret's Orchestra, recorded ?/?/25, (from "My Girl") matrix BVE-31752-?, as played on 1926 Orthophonic Victrola FOUR-THREE. This is the "AA" side, VE electrical recording, catalog number engraved in runout area: 19571-AA. Unknown if this is an electrical dub from original acoustical pressing or if this is a new recording. "VE" in oval stamped into runout at top of this "AA" side. This is a Canadian pressing. The American Victor release featured only the acoustic sides of this number, coupled with Waring's Pennsylvanians "Will You Remember Me?" Victor page 4713 shows 4 takes of matrix 31573 (with no comment about being electric; for a couple of the early electrics, the handwritten comments say they are electric, but the file does not show BVE in the typed version). 31573 is by Jack Shilkret's Orchestra conducted by Nat on take -1 and by Leroy Shield on takes -2 through -4. Later in the page, four takes of matrix 31752 show as follows: These are by the International Novelty Orch, conducted by Jack, with Nat on celeste, with the title One Stolen Kiss; take -2 issued as 19568A. In his American Dance Band Discography, Rust lists both recordings just as I found them in the Victor pages. Perhaps an electric recording of "You and I," which should be assigned matrix BVE-31753 (not 31752), was recorded later, and hence is NOT one of the earliest Victor electrics.

1929 ANNOUNCED Victor Scroll 78rpm Orthophonic Phonograph Record GEORGE OLSEN

Here is an unusual announced Victor Scroll era recording by George Olsen And His Music. Recorded on July 23, 1929 and assigned Victor catalog number 22063, this is the delightful "Out Where The Moonbeams Are Born". The recording features the unusual announcement (on the 'A' side only!) by, I believe, George Olsen himself and the vocal refrain is also George Olsen. I played this on one of my early Victor 2-door Orthophonic Credenza models. You'll see that near the end of the video that I reached to remove the tonearm a bit early...oh well...sorry about that. I hope that you enjoy the video and thanks, as always, for stopping in for a visit.

1959 RCA Victor Stereo Orthophonic High Fidelity Console (Glen Campbell "Rhinestone Cowboy")

I have been searching for one of these for a long time, I am now the proud owner of a 1959 RCA Victor Stereo Orthophonic High Fidelity Console Model SHC-4. I stumbled on this piece searching Craigslist, I was searching some towns within what I consider no more than a days drive, and bingo I saw this listed in the Knoxville area. Upon making contact with the very nice owner we agreed to meet in Chattanooga on Saturday the following weekend as he and his son would be there for a ball game. The fellow claimed he had this piece for 10-15 years, and had never plugged it in. I still agreed to purchase thinking possible this piece could have major problems. After getting the RCA home I started checking it out, first off I checked the Rectifier tube, and then proceeded to the others, I had only to replace one 6CG7, all of the others checked out great. Since everything looked so good, and despite my better judgement I decided to attempt to plug it in, it took less than a minute to decide the unit had issues, and i quickly unplugged it. I removed the chassis and made a quick evaluation, ended up replacing all of the electrolytic filters, a resistor, and 2 of the 5 #47 bulbs. I put it back together, and it came to life, even the controls work very nicely despite not being cleaned. I then moved on to the record changer, upon inspection I realized it was missing a needle, and as fate would have it, I had none in this style. I cleaned the changer extensively, and re-lubricated ...

1957 RCA 7HF4 New Orthophonic High Fidelity Record Player

This is the RCA 7HF4, It was the base model High Fidelity Console for 1957. This was a local antique store score. It has a modest dual 50C5 power tubes and 12AX7, 6C5 run through a 8 inch woofer and pair of 3 inch tweeters. RCA engineers designed this console quite well and they really got a lot of big sound out of somewhat modest components. This thing really gets loud and sounds GREAT. I tried a Pfansthiel P-228 stereo ceramic cartridge in this, run in mono at .9V output and 6-8 gram tracking force. With .9v output the 228 does not overdrive the amp like the 89T tends to and it really let's the amp utilize it's full power, stretch it's legs and you get full clear sound all the way up to 10. Listen to how she really wakens up when I increase the bass and treble. Not sure if you can tell but she is really screaming in this video. The mids and highs really sparkle and are crystal clear with this new p-228 as you can tell. She sounds amazing even recorded through my tiny Sony digital camera!

RCA New Orthophonic High Fidelity 45 RPM Record Player Model #8HF45P

Here's a wonderful suitcase player from the late 50's by RCA. It's a true portable "Hi-Fi" record player featuring a 4 tube push-pull amp feeding a pair of speakers with volume and tone controls along the side. The amp has been rebuilt, the player mechanism cleaned-lubed-adjusted, all new rubber inside, & the cartridge has been replaced with a more modern 52T Sonotone ceramic stereo cartridge bridged for mono. These are amongst the best sounding 45 RPM record players in the industry, whether they be like this portable player OR the #7HF45 RCA table models. They have PLENTY of clean volume and a wide range of tone with the adjustable tone control. If I had my choice of only one (1) portable MONOPHONIC 45 RPM record player to take to a party, this would be my choice! This is my #1 recommendation (including the wood table models) for someone looking to purchase a GREAT sounding, 45 RPM only, monophonic Hi-Fi record player at a reasonable price. You just can't go wrong - they sound simply marvelous!! I hope you enjoy not only this video but all of the others I've put up on YouTube showcasing the great 45 RPM record players available in the 50's!

The Victrola is an early two door Credenza Model from 1925. This was the top of the line model offered by Victor, when they introduced their new line of Orthophonic Victrolas in late 1925 on "Victor Day". Victrola 10-50 Orthophonic, 'In A Little Town Called Home Sweet Home'

Victrola 10-50 Automatic Orthophonic, playing "In a Little Town Called Home Sweet Home", by George Olsen and His Band, vocals by Bob Borger. I am using my own homemade tungsten tipped needle, using .006" tungsten wire tip. (Same principle as Victor's Tungs-Tone needles.) I use these so I can use the auto changer on this machine without changing the needle between records. I restored the mechanicals myself using the available replacement aluminum parts, which replaced the bad pot metal ones. I also own a Victrola VV-210 and a Silvertone portable acoustic phonograph which I've fixed up and work great. I like the VV-210 for acoustic records, and the 10-50 for orthophonic, but the 10-50 makes even acoustic records sound a little richer (and louder!) I still have to get the 10"/12" selector knob working, right now if I need to change the size of record I'm playing I have to do it manually from underneath the mechanism, but I usually only play one size anyway. I use .006" wire for my needles, Victor used .007" which is a bit too large for the grooves and tends to wear away the peaks between the grooves. The usual width of a groove at the topmost point of the sides is about .0065", but can vary up or down a little depending on what label cut the record. I make my .006 tips a bit shorter than usual so they can take the weight without bending, makes for less plays per needle but then they only cost me 2 cents each to make!

RCA Orthophonic High Fidelity Record Player, Robert Mitchum (The Ballad of Thunder Road)

Scored at a local antique store for $25 this 1950's RCA Orthophonic High Fidelity Record player was completely seized, the tone arm was completely unmovable. To my delight it appeared someone had recently replaced the cartridge, either just before retirement, or in an attempt to get the unit functional again, included in the cabinet was a small bag containing a complete set of new turrets for the unit, all but the 16 RPM witch is seldom used anyway. A good cleaning, and lubricating got the turn table ready for action. Beneath the audio chassis I found most of the wax melted and running off of all of the old wax paper condensers. To my surprise all tubes tested great, as well as all resistors were well within tolerance, a complete recap of all electrolytic capacitors, bypass condensers, and a good cleaning of the tone & volume controls, and she was ready for action. This old RCA has a very nice, and rich tone, please enjoy Robert Mitchum as he sings "The Ballad of Thunder Road" played on a 45 RPM single.

1925 Victor Orthophonic Credenza. Restored

Hi all, this is my latest project, finally completed it a few months ago, took my 4 months. This is my 1925 Credenza, the date on the make is Dec 31st 1925. I got lucky on this as this is a early 4 door model, they came out the mid to later part of 25 into 26. But mine came with a Brass reproducer, so I basically lucked out by a day or so because in 26 they started using the pot metal ones. I bought this from a local man, it was his grandfathers, who bought it new. I paid 200 for it, came with 35 victrola binders full of records and a tiger oak record cabinet, have not touched that yet. The insides motor board lid are original, I redid the finish, finished it in special walnut. Cleaned and regressed the 4 spring motor, brass reproducer is all original, and sounds great, I restored the dashpots lid supports, so now the lid shuts nice and soft by it's self. And a new piece of grill cloth. This was by far the hardest machine I ever have done, took me a long time but it came out great. Hope you enjoy it

RCA 1957 Orthophonic Table Model HI-Fi Playing Johnny Hodges 45s

RCA Othophonic table model Hi-Fi 1957 This is an old video I made and then rejected after I restored this RCA in the summer of 2008. It may have due to being a little over exposed, and washed out looking. I just found it after being lost in my computer files for a couple of years , and decided to upload it. If and when I locate the 45s I will post the title and artist. No telling what else is hidden deep in the computer somewhere. My hard drive became corrupted a while back, and I recovered 95 % of the lost files with Get Data Back, but they lost their folders and file names, were all assigned numbers when restored, and all lumped together whcih makes them harder to find until I get them organized, and renamed again, but at least I didn't loose all the music, photos, and videos.
