Typewriter Ribbon Tins: Packaging Imagination

A little piece I made about a hobby I picked up a year or 2 ago. Certainly a change of pace from my other videos, but a it's a genuine labor of love about a fascinating little corner on the desk of Americana. If some pictures go by too fast, it's probably best to pause the video. Thanks again to all who contributed, especially Mutt Harrelson, whose acting credit I forgot to include! Sorry Mutt!! I hope you enjoy!

"Tomorrow" from "Bugsy Malone" - Cover

One of the great movie musicals of all time, Bugsy Malone contains some of the best work of Scott Baio, Jodie Foster, and composer Paul Williams. This song is sung by Fizzy, sweeping up the speakeasy after closing, as he dreams of breaking out of his dead-end job, citing his boss's endless promises that he'll get back to him about an audition tomorrow, always tomorrow. Anyway, it's not perfect, but I hope you like it!

Cucurrucucu Paloma -cover- Tomas Mendez (Version Castellana)

I wasn't thrilled about the vocal in the previous video, so I decided to torture myself by trying this one : ) Originally by Tomas Mendez, I first saw it performed by the inimitably great Caetano Veloso in Pedro Almodovar's film "Talk to Her". I'm singing in the Castilian accent (central Spain), as it's more natural for me. Admittedly there are some precarious moments here, but it's one of the most difficult vocal parts I've attempted yet (and the chords are a pain too!). Gracias a Don Arthur, y dedicado a mis padres. Hope you enjoy! : )

One of the show-stoppers from RHPS, sung near the end by Frank-N-Furter (played by Tim Curry in the film). Apologies for the mistakes & the sound problems at the end, but feel free to sing along! The setting is tonight's open mic at Juna's Cafe. Search "Junasopenmike" for past performances by others. The Hat makes a longed-for reappearance... There's word it might be from northern Thailand, but it hasn't been confirmed. Special thanks to Bob Hutko, and I hope you enjoy!

Everyone is She (Original Blues)

A very short little original blues ditty. Special thanks to Bob Hutko (bobhutko) for his support and his guitar on this one. Hope you like it! Lyrics: Someone said she loved me, And I let that someone down, Since then, she's been living in my head. It's been so long, Couldn't picture the sight of her face If I didn't dream it every night... Seen her ghost and she ain't even dead. Where do you go when your Heart and soul's got them Black and Blues? Running back to the moment Before I ran outta you. Shoulda tried for some sweet lie Coulda thought up a better play, But she had me cold, How was I supposed to know what to say? She didn't make no sound, she didn't Throw no words or hands around, But I ain't lucky, and It's no boast to be crawling away. Since then my sorry heart's always Jumpin' out of me. 'Cause she is everywhere and everyone is she. copyright 2007 by Offaloffice

Simplified, single-voice version of a sweet, hymn-like song. A few mistakes, but fair enough to sing along to if you know any of the harmonies that it was originally performed in. Special thanks to Bob Hutko for moral and technical support. More madcap mishaps to come soon, I hope!

Aliver (Original piece)

A new original song, first take, many warts and all. Just a bluesy number about what makes some people feel 'aliver' (as in "more alive"). 3 verses for now...I may add a bridge, and of course, when I add a spine-crunching electric guitar solo and a 103-piece orchestra, it will be 45 minutes long. That's tomorrow, though. Dedicated to my amazing family. Sorry about the weird capture/speed problem at the beginning. Lyrics: I asked the Man 'Cause I was feelin low, What keeps you in your motion, What makes your motor go? He said I'll tell you somethin' And it's all I need: Ain't nothin in a sucker's world Like fillin' my cup of greed. Makes me feel aliver. Lyin' conniver... I asked the User How he lived so free He said I serve my pleasure, And the rest is all about me. I won't pay you no mind, I won't offer a dime to waste all your time, And then there's this just one thing I gotta put inside to keep me In and outta line. Makes me feel aliver, It's my private reviver. I asked my Woman What it is I need. She said come on over, And commence to gettin' all up on me. I got what I was lookin' for And I didn't have to ask a doctor for it, Them noises from behind the door When we got right down and she Wiped the floor with me. Made me feel like a survivor, I'm ten times aliver. Copyright 2007 by Offaloffice

Return of the Son of Abel Axe Zappa Tribute Solo Idiocy

Frank Zappa is a guitar giant, and while I don't presume to have half his ear or his chops, I wanted to post an improvisational homage to my most influential axe hero. It has an assnote or 2 ... : ) The chords are basically the solo section to a live "RDNZL", and the guitar is plugged through a Vox wah to get the honk. Amp is the Johnson Millennium. The late Maestro's solos, live recordings, and instrumental compositions are astonishing. His son Dweezil's playing is excellent too. Viva the Zappas, and happy Youtubing! Matchbooks and Matchbook Collecting: A Brief Look

Hello, and apologies for the long absence! Here's a video about vintage matchbooks; a kind of companion piece to the one about typewriter ribbon tins. It moves too quickly to read all of the text in a few of them, but you can go back and pause to get more detail. My friend Adam generously loaned me his match collection, and a lot of photos didn't make the cut, so stay tuned for a slideshow of outtakes. I hope to continue making these videos and sharing them with my fellow "collectibiliacs", who share my curiosity about the many things we like to collect, and why. This one took forever, but I learned a lot in the process. Thanks for watching, and I hope you like it! (FYI: I used Adobe Premiere Elements 9 to put it together).

I'd never heard a version of this traditional Irish piece with vocals until I stumbled on a live Richard Thompson version last week. I play the guitar like a handless cadaver compared to him, but he's inspired me immensely, so I thought I'd add this to the many versions already on Youtube. It's my first experience with DADGAD tuning, so please forgive the mistakes, and I hope you enjoy!

Better Hole (Slideshow Tribute to Home)

I wrote this song in 2000 and recorded the demo the next year at Love Monkey Studios (Austin TX). The pictures were taken in and around my hometown of Ithaca, NY, throughout the last 2 years or so by me, my brother, a friend, and his dog :) There are 3 happy coincidences where 2 of us snapped the same location in different seasons. This wasn't planned, so the angles aren't quite exact, but it's still pretty cool. Hope you enjoy! All images and audio are the sole property of the artists. All rights reserved.

Cover of "Ride" by Nick Drake

Most of Nick Drake's brilliant "Pink Moon", including this song, is well beyond my finger-picking ability, but I fell madly in love with "Ride" nearly 10 years ago, and finally tried learning it 2 weeks ago. This simplified, "fake" (and slightly rushed?) version is what I've come up with so far. It's in the CGCFCE tuning, and there are a lot of playing and vocal mistakes. Nonetheless, I was so happy to get SOME approximation of this deceptively difficult (for me), song that I decided to put it out there, bum notes and all, in case I get hit by a bus tomorrow : ) I haven't tried the AADEBE tuning for it, but I may check it out. Trying this made me appreciate Nick Drake's amazingly mature, confident, intricately beautiful playing even more than I did previously. I probably should have practiced it for another 2 weeks, and you can see my slack-jawed concentration throughout...but I hope you enjoy! : )

Spontaneous Waltz

Hello, and apologies for not posting or logging in for so long. Here's a short piece I made as a tribute to my friend Steve, who passed away in July of 2009. He was an enthusiastic mentor and fellow collector/obsessionist of typewriter ribbon tins, and his sudden passing was a terrible loss. The video is meant to evoke not only his avid interest in tins, but also the fact that he was a schoolteacher for many years (first male Kindergarten teacher in NY State), and sometimes used the guitar as a teaching tool. The title comes from a story at his memorial, where a woman fondly recounted how Steve randomly started to waltz with her as their tire was getting changed one night, decades ago. As a long-time spontaneous waltzer myself, it was one more thing I learned that we had in common. Suddenly I had a name (and a purpose) for a song I'd written several years before. Hope you like it!

Lookin' For Revenge (Original Blues)

An old song of mine making its video debut. It was recorded a few times in the past, including by a wailin' blues band in Austin, and once with a friend's turntable scratching. Hope you enjoy! Lyrics: Long I stayed Now I'm chased away. Write my my will, Let me know what I never had. Haunted by the fool I was, I'm runnin' out because I done something worse Than the lies I said. Can't show my face To your mama and your friends, So I'm gonna walk outta here, 'Cause you'll be lookin' for revenge. I never wanted to fall, Now there's nothing I can say at all, So I'm gonna wander. And I'm gonna try Not to remember why Your absence Made my heart go yonder. I'd pay to stay, But I don't have my life to spend, So I'm gonna fly outta here, 'Cause you'll be lookin' for revenge. If I couldn't look backwards, I wouldn't be able to see. I miss what I never was, And all I'm never gonna be. I dug my hole, but I got no stone, I don't even have a wooden nickel, To toss (to) myself in the street. All alone, And it's getting near the end, So I'm gonna disappear, And you got your revenge. All rights reserved, moochers! : )

to a god whose name i don't really know; they say love is blind, let me love blindly then justice is blind, let justice be done then, with compassion and without prejudice or any further shedding of innocent blood. hatred surely is blind-- there are faces i can't see. cries i can't hear. people who are not my people but who nonetheless are suffering, as my people have suffered-- more than i can know. i was crying for them, i want justice for them. i want ceasefire, moratorium, world humanitarian response to aid the victims, i want truth telling, justice for the crimes against humanity, reconciliation, forgiveness, peace. i want the cult of death and torture to be seen for what it is and i want it to stop! let us identify among us, call to action, and look to the most wise, loving, patient, intelligent, thick skinned people, peace activists and teachers, counselors and mediators to address this conflict on an immediate and global level, for peace and reconciliation among enemies are now more than ever endangered unto the threat of extinction. the world is mad for war. the sickness of perpetual conflict creates a mass delusion, a global bloodlust, a common belief that too much is never enough. i pray to good people everywhere and to the angels of the air that mercy and peace shall descend upon the innocents like the rays of a sheltering sun a dove's cry for peace in the middle east and here i found an answer to my prayer: www.youtube.com Cucurrucucu Paloma -cover- Tomas ...
