UIST'09: Bonfire: a nomadic system for hybrid laptop-tabletop interaction
Presented at UIST (ACM Symposium on User Interface Software and Technology) www.acm.org PAPER ABSTRACT We present Bonfire, a self-contained mobile computing system that uses two laptop-mounted laser micro-projectors to project an interactive display space to either side of a laptop keyboard. Coupled with each micro-projector is a camera to enable hand gesture tracking, object recognition, and information transfer within the projected space. Thus, Bonfire is neither a pure laptop system nor a pure tabletop system, but an integration of the two into one new nomadic computing platform. This integration (1) enables observing the periphery and responding appropriately, eg, to the casual placement of objects within its field of view, (2) enables integration between physical and digital objects via computer vision, (3) provides a horizontal surface in tandem with the usual vertical laptop display, allowing direct pointing and gestures, and (4) enlarges the input/output space to enrich existing applications. We describe Bonfire's architecture, and offer scenarios that highlight Bonfire's advantages. We also include lessons learned and insights for further development and use. AUTHORS: Shaun K. Heading west out of Urumqi, buses speed along a newly paved highway littered with Sinopec gas stations, and head straight out into the wide open spaces of Xinjiangs northern frontier area. The modern and well-maintained transportation network in these far-flung regions of China is not only a clear measure of Chinas rapid economic growth, but also an indicator of Beijings determination to develop and keep a firm grip on its Western regions. Striving to bolster Xinjiangs economic development potential, deflect social and political unrest and increase trade with Central Asias markets, China has not only built up local infrastructure, but is also involved in constructing roads in neighboring states, including the Dushanbe-Khojand highway project in Tajikistan. These gleaming new roads comfortably lead west out of Urumqi towards Yining, the capital of the Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture. Yining lies on Chinas most western edge, a mere 100 kilometers from Kazakhstans border. The Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture is the largest Kazakh region in China. According to the 2000 census the prefecture covers almost 300000 square kilometers and is home to 4.08 million people, a quarter of whom are Kazakh. The same 2000 census showed that 45 percent of Ili Prefecture residents are Han Chinese, while 16 percent are Uighur. Ili River Basin is one of the most prosperous regions of Xinjiang Province -- endowed with rich mineral deposits, abundant water supplies, and fertile agricultural land <b>...</b>

The Somali Nomadic lifestyle is what defines the Somali culture. It is from these dry plateaus, valleys and watering holes from which all Somali traditions spring, forming the bedrock of the Somali society and a rich cultural heritage handed down to generations of camel herders and pastoralists. The traditional dances and weddings in Miyi form the basis of almost all Somali poetry and music. And to understand the meaning and origins of Somali poetry, music and literature, one must be fairly informed about the pastoral lifestyle, for without it he looses majority of the meaning, metaphors, allusions and insinuations imbedded within them. The austerities of life in Miyi are simply remarkable. Life here fundamentally depends on needs rather than wants and the western life of hedonism and extravagance does not fall within the purview of the Somali nomad. As soon as children reach six years of age, their set of responsibilities are laid out before them and, against the backdrop of parched fields and scarcity of water, they traipse the vast open country often parading herds of camels, sheep and goats. A boy at that tender age would be expected to learn tending to the camels whereas a girl would start by guarding the flock of sheep and goats in the nearby green pastures.
