Fly Tying Midge - Emerger Video
Tying an Emerger for Tailwaters and Stillwaters. A very easy fly to tie in sizes from 18 down to 24. This fly works and is a constant fish catcher on the San Juan River, Frying Pan River, Henry's Fork and Crooked River. The rainbows just love this fly in the larger 18 - 20 hook size and the browns prefer 20-24 hook size. I use an Umpqua/TMC 200R hook, Iron Grey thread 6/0, brown fall deer hair, peacock herl and 1.5mm white foam strips. Tying two dozen takes very little time. I also change the thread to yellow 6/0 Uni thread for a lighter color fly for mornings. Use a 6x tippet when you fish with this fly as it is in the surface film and trout get picky about flies they can see for any length of time. Tight lines and good hatches!

If I Was-Midge Ure
James "Midge" Ure, OBE (born 10 October 1953) is a Scottish guitarist, singer, keyboard player, and songwriter. He enjoyed particular success in the 1970s and 1980s in bands including Slik, Thin Lizzy, The Rich Kids, Visage, and most notably as frontman of Ultravox. Ure co-wrote and produced the charity single "Do They Know It's Christmas?" and co-organised Band Aid, Live Aid and Live 8 with Bob Geldof. He twice received an Ivor Novello Award with Geldof for co-writing "Do They Know It's Christmas?" Ure acts as trustee for the charity, and serves as ambassador for Save The Children. His stage name, Midge, is a phonetic reversal of Jim, the diminutive form of his real name. "If I Was" was written by Ure and Danny Mitchell and produced by Ure. It reached #1 on the UK singles chart for a single week in September 1985. This was Ure's third number one, coming after his success with Slik in 1976 and Band Aid in 1984. The song features Mark King of Level 42 on bass guitar. In the sleeve notes for the 2001 compilation If I Was: The Very Best Of Midge Ure & Ultravox Ure recites "This song is pure Danny Mitchell. I found a demo of it on a cassette Danny had sent me for his band The Messengers. I grabbed it with both hands, messed around with it, sprinkled it with fairy dust and the rest is history." Pests - pear midge maggots
In this imperfect world, there are many problems. Hey , you already knew that! In the context of tree fruit growing, there are many and various pests and diseases which (like the pear midge) can destroy your whole crop. I plan to put up a few videos about some of the more common problems. There is ethical and scientific controversy about how best to manage pest and disease problems. Basically there are 2 approaches-organic and conventional. There is some overlap, for example organic growers use some pesticides and conventional growers use methods like pheremone traps (for codling moth and plum maggot-I will deal with this later) which are 'organic' etc. This is a big debate and there is a lot of technical information and strong feelings. We need to stick to the facts and do more and better research, which IMHO should be government or not-for-profit foundation funded as big pharma will only research stuff it hopes to make money from, whereas the world needs cheap, safe, sustainable solutions to pests and diseases of food plants which don't need too much high tech. I do NOT offer specific advice on how to control pests and diseases (not least for legal reasons) apart from study the facts, obey local laws, and SEVEN TIMES follow the instructions with any pesticides you use, but as a service to fellow fruit growers I share the information from my litle English orchard for what its worth.
