This is our tribute to Jay Bennet. Jay Walter Bennett (November 15, 1963 - May 24, 2009) was an American guitarist, multiinstrumentalist, engineer, producer, and singer-songwriter, best known for his work with the band Wilco. On May 24, 2009 Bennett died unexpectedly in his sleep.
8/7/09: Cause of Jay Bennett's death (5/24/09) was an accidental overdose of the painkiller fentanyl according to livedaily.com. I hope it brings some closure to ones closest to him. In Aug 1999, Jeff Tweedy and Jay Bennett of Wilco stopped by the Austin Music Network (AMN) to play a couple of tunes that would air on the AMN music video show, "rock.alt". This is a cover of the 1927 Richard "Rabbit" Brown song "James Alley Blues". AMN started broadcasting in 1994 on Time Warner cable channel 15 and went off-air in Aug 2005 due to lack of advertising funding. During it's time, it was the only city-sponsored, non-profit music channel in the world.

This is the "engineer demo" of the Wilco song, "I Am Trying To Break Your Heart", thought to be recorded by then-member of Wilco, Jay Bennett. The song was later re-mixed by producer Jim O'Rourke, whose final version appeared on their album Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. In my opinion, the "YHF Engineer Demos" album is a better album than the legitimate release of "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot". Jay Bennett's musical, technical genius took Wilco to its creative summit. He was to Wilco what Brian Wilson was to the Beach Boys. And after Bennett left Wilco, Jeff Tweedy guided his Bennett-less band back down the mountain, into the safe, nostalgic foothills of Americana rock. I always missed the sonic depth and rich arrangements Bennett brought to the band. I will miss them even more now.

Summerteeth is the third studio album by Chicago alternative rock band Wilco. Released through Reprise Records on March 9, 1999, the album was heavily influenced lyrically by twentieth century literature, as well as singer Jeff Tweedy's marital problems. Unlike previous albums, Summerteeth was heavily overdubbed in the studio with ProTools. Tweedy and Jay Bennett created most of the album in the studio, a contrast to the band's previous albums, which were rehearsed live and recorded almost at once. Despite critical acclaim from numerous outlets, including Allmusic, The Chicago Tribune, and The Village Voice, Summerteeth sold approximately 200000 copies — a modest number compared to the sales of 1996's Being There. Wilco agreed to remix "Can't stand it" with David Kahne to cater to radio markets, but the single failed to attain substantial airplay.
