Herb Ellis and Dave Maslow - Sweet Georgia Brown (1986)

Mitchell Herbert 'Herb' Ellis August 4, 1921 March 28, 2010 Ellis, born in 1921 in Farmersville, Texas, was regarded as one of the finest jazz guitar soloists. He mixed bebop with country twang in a career that spanned six decades. After an early stint playing with big band leader Jimmy Dorsey, Ellis and two Dorsey colleagues formed the Soft Winds trio, whose "Detour Ahead" became a jazz standard, recorded most memorably by Billie Holiday. "As jazz has changed through the years and different styles have developed, Ellis always remained true to the form he played from the beginning," Recording Academy President and CEO Neil Portnow said in a statement. "The jazz world has lost a great musician, and we extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends and all who enjoyed his work." Ellis attracted the most notoriety performing with the Oscar Peterson Trio for five years from 1953 to 1958 with pianist Peterson and bassist Ray Brown. He later went on to tour and record with Fitzgerald and was a frequent participant in record producer Norman Granz's all-star Jazz at the Philharmonic touring shows. Ellis is survived by his wife Patti, son, daughter and three grandchildren.

Jerry Lee Lewis - Sweet Georgia Brown

Live in London, in 1983. SWEET GEORGIA BROWN: The 1925 song "Sweet Georgia Brown" is a jazz standard and pop tune known to many as the theme song of the Harlem Globetrotters basketball team. "Sweet Georgia Brown" was written by Maceo Pinkard (music) and Kenneth Casey (words). The tune was first recorded by bandleader Ben Bernie and his Orchestra. As Bernie's then nationally famous orchestra featuring the number did much to popularize the number, Pinkard cut Bernie in for a share of the tune's royalties by giving him a co-writer credit to the song. Several artists have recorded versions of this songs. Ethel Waters recorded it in the 1920s, the California Ramblers in 1925 and Django Reinhardt in the 1930s did an instrumental version, The Beatles in 1961 working as back-up band for singer Tony Sheridan, the bands Gentle Giant and Count Basie in 1977, etc. Jerry Lee Lewis recorded it in the mid 1970s, in the album There Must Be More To Love Than This.

Emmet Ray - Sweet Georgia Brown

If you are a student of jazz history, you are aware that Emmet Ray -- the subject of Woody Allens "Sweet and Lowdown" -- really existed. And not only did he exist, Emmet resembled many of the jazz musicians of the 1940s. At one point in his career he lived off the money earned by a couple of prostitutes, a practice not unheard of in jazz circles beginning with Buddy Bolden and Jelly Roll Morton. However, these jazz musicians prefer the term "manager" to the phrase pimp. Like many jazz legends, Emmet was an anti-hero, but his guitar playing -- makes up for his multitude of sins. Emmet was also a traveler who not only toured America but has played extensively in Europe. The guitarist lived at a time when jazzmen first traversed the country, spreading consciousness of jazz even to American audiences who were beyond the modest reach of radio and recordings. This original American art form not only spread across the country but to Europe in the 20s and 30s. The way was paved by such men as Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington who were welcomed enthusiastically when they appeared on the other side of the Atlantic Armstrong in 1932 and Ellington in 1933. As Bernie's then nationally famous orchestra featuring the number did much to popularize the number, Pinkard cut Bernie in for a share of the tune's royalties by giving him a co-writer credit to the song. [edit] Notable versions Of the many early recordings of the tune, the vocal version by Ethel Waters in the 1920s, and instrumental Django Reinhardt in the 1930s, are particularly notable. Shortly after the song debuted in 1925, the California Ramblers recorded their own instrumental version of "Sweet Georgia Brown" as well. The version used by the Globetrotters is a 1949 instrumental by Brother Bones & His Shadows, featuring whistling and bones by Brother Bones. It was adopted as the Globetrotters theme in 1952. The song was covered by The Beatles while working as a back-up band for singer Tony Sheridan. Two versions exist; the first was recorded in 1961 in Germany ...
