"Why We Fight" director Eugene Jarecki on the Election 2008

"...The [war] machine does not care how well-meaning Barack Obama is, doesn't care how well-meaning the voters are who hope that Barack Obama can make change. The machine is a cutthroat instrument of power. ...A single candidate, up against the incredibly tangled corruption of this system, is hopeless. And they're made more hopeless by the fact that we are disengaged, because without a public mandate, somebody like Barack Obama will enter the White House - and...it's already happened in the evolution of his policy paradigms - he'll enter the White House without a mandate. And if he doesn't have a mandate, those enormous forces of power will give him a mandate. They'll give him a very clear mandate." Eugene Jarecki, director of the film Why We Fight, speaks about how the influence of the military-industrial complex over elected officials makes it impossible for them to change the system if the voters don't put constant pressure on the officials before and after they are elected. In absence of such pressure, he says, "our vote is wasted." Excerpt from Democracy Now, 20 Oct 2008. www.democracynow.org *********************************

Maine Academy of Staged Combat Falmouth HS Fight Week Richard III

This was BROADSWORD day at the MASC Falmouth High School Fight Week. This is all less than 5 hours from the first time they ever held a broadsword to the taping of this (altered) scene from RICHARD III (The Battle of Bodsworth Field). Some of the fighting is pretty fair for a workshop setting... but again... the point of this posting is NOT to show great staged combat. Instead, it is to show how with even just a few hours of training, 13 and 14 year olds can be SAFE swinging blunted steel at each other. Had these young actors had more time to train with Fight Director Mark Bedell, they would have been fighting at performance level in only a month or two! Oh and... Fight Director Mark Bedell edited this with some free software... he should stay a Fight Director and leave the editing to Michael Waye. www.Fight-Director.org.

The Fight Master: A Documentary about Paddy Crean

Promotional clip. To learn more about this clip and its creators, please visit www.mayafair.ca Filmmakers; Elisabeth Feryn and Lesley Walker-Fitzpatrick Editor: Joe Weedick and Alan Gough Thanks to all the fight directors and actors who gave interviews. Young when the world of film making was young, Paddy, as he was affectionately known, lived in this wild new era as actor, swashbuckler and fight director. His life story is intertwined with the history of film and theatre in the twentieth century; his life threads woven with memories of Lawrence Olivier, John Gielgud, Alec Guiness, Douglas Fairbanks and Audrey Hepburn among many others and of course Errol Flynn for whom he was fight choreographer and fight double. His memories lead us on a journey from the elegance of the Edwardian era of pre-World War One London through Ireland, Italy and finally to the Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Canada where in 1962 he took on the duties of fencing master and fight director.
