Nearly two million British public sector workers, opposed to government pension cuts, will embark on a 24-hour general strike. Wednesday's strike including immigration officers, teachers, garbage collectors, firefighters and other public sector workers will be the largest since 1979's 'Winter of Discontent'. Motivated by pension reform, which they say will require them to work longer before receiving a pension and contribute higher amounts each month to the account, as many as two million people could stay home from their jobs today. Austerity measures are also one of the catalysts of this strike. On Tuesday Downing Street extended a cap on public sector pay raises through to 2014. Al Jazeera's Laurence Lee reports from London.

Celebrating three decades of PC gaming! I take a look at my personal top games for the PC, ending with this video of the years 2000-2009. Ah, the era where the PC starts really getting shafted due to lame publisher dominance and a console-centric industry. Still tons of great games, despite this! This is 100% subjective and my own opinion, nothing more. Games were chosen on the basis of how awesome the game was and how often I go back and play them. Why 17? Because it's an odd number, very odd. My apologies to Assassin's Creed 2. I love you, but your publisher Ubisoft was an absolute turd with the obnoxious and pathetic DRM required to play on the PC. I despise Ubisoft, not Ezio, for making one of my top 10 games of the decade unplayable on my platform of choice. Sure, it's been somewhat "fixed" now, but I have not forgotten, as Ubisoft has not repented.

On October 31 2003, Hamilton went for a morning surf along Tunnels Beach, Kauai with friend Alana Blanchard, and Blanchard's father and brother. Around 7:30 am, she was lying sideways on her surfboard with her left arm dangling in the water, when a 14ft tiger shark attacked her, ripping her left arm off just below the shoulder. If the shark had bitten two inches further in, the attack would have been fatal. Hamilton had lost almost 60% of her blood that morning. Her friends helped paddle her back to shore, and fashioned a tourniquet out of a surfboard leash around what was left of her arm before rushing her to Wilcox Memorial Hospital. Her dad was supposed to have a knee surgery that morning but she took his place in the operating room. She then spent six more days in recovery at the hospital. Despite the trauma of the incident, Hamilton was determined to return to surfing. Just three weeks after the incident, she returned to her board and went surfing again. Initially, she adopted a custom-made board that was longer and slightly thicker which made it easier to paddle. She has observed that she has to kick a lot more to make up for the loss of her left arm. After teaching herself to surf with one arm, she has again begun surfing competitively. She is now back to using competitive performance short-boards again.
