Classic Game Room HD reviews the ATARI 5200 video game system from 1982, the successor to the Atari 2600. This is the 4 controller model which is the size of a container ship and uses the most absurd power/tv switcher hookup ever created. There are many things to loathe about this unique game console and one thing to love, its an ATARI!!! It plays hundreds of Atari 5200 game cartridges, many of which are slightly upgraded versions of popular Atari 2600 games like Missile Command, Vanguard and Space Invaders. Others are awesome games which look like early NES action games like Buck Rogers Planet of Zoom and The Dreadnaught Factor. There are some Atari 5200 exclusives as well. Collecting for the 5200 is not terribly expensive, even though the Atari 5200 is considered a commercial failure there are still many out there and they are such an amazing pain to own that people want to get rid of them. Collectors benefit from this as 5200 games and consoles on eBay are easy to find, but working controllers are not. The Achilles heel of the Atari 5200 is the terrible, analog, non-self-centering controller which is difficult to replace because of the keypad. You can buy refurbished Atari 5200 controllers or the expensive Wico aftermarket Atari 5200 controller if you are really ambitious. The fact is the Atari 5200 has some great games, is a joy to collect for and is so large that it demands respect. To celebrate the completion of my console collection (maybe) I decided to make this video. All the systems work and are in pretty good shape. I started collecting seriously in 2006 after watching JamesNintendoNerd on YouTube. At the time, all I had was my PS2 slim. It took me four years to get to this point. I don't make a lot of money, so I had to be patient and look for deals at garage sales, thrift stores, flea markets and classified ads. My general rule was not to spend more than $20 on any one system. I had to bend that rule on occasion for rare systems like the Heavy Sixer, NES Top Loader, and the CDX, otherwise, I think I followed it pretty well. I purchased my shelving at Lowe's or Home Depot...I can't remember which. Basically, all I had to do was fasten a metal track at the top and attach three support beams. Pretty easy. EDIT: I've been getting a lot of questions like, "Why don't you have a (insert system here) or a (insert system here)?" Forgive me, I should have explained this in the video. By and large I only own systems that I came into contact with at some point during my childhood. Some I owned before but a lot of them I just played at a friends house or at Toys R Us. There are other great systems not on these shelves, but since I don't have any personal attachment to them, they are no in my collection. In a sense, I am collecting my memories, not just systems. Part 2 of 2. Classic Game Room HD reviews the Hyperkin RETRON 3 video game console that plays Super Nintendo SNES, Nintendo 8-bit NES and 16-bit Sega Genesis video games. It even has S-Video (which works for Genesis and SNES) as well as standard composite video. The Retron3 comes with 2 wireless controllers which are acceptable for NES games but have poor Genesis button mapping. More importantly though, the Retron 3 allows you to play with your original controllers for Genesis, NES and SNES!! Now, that's a feature!! This CGR review of the Hyperkin Retron 3 shows gameplay from several video games including Gaiares on Genesis, Ultraman on SNES and Zanac on Nintendo Entertainment System NES. This video shows the s-video quality of the Hyperkin Retron3 compared to a modified Sega Genesis Model 1 and demonstrates the audio quality. Video quality is very impressive and audio is not bad, although it lacks some of the dynamics that the original Genesis produces. Overall performance was awesome and CGR thinks that this console should not be overlooked when shopping for replacement old school systems. Flexibility, quality and original controller compatibility make the Retron 3 a bombastic classic video game console.
