Anatomy of a Cirrus Stall Accident

So-called over-the-top or cross-control stall accidents have been common among general aviation pilots for years. But no one has ever really documented what happens in one--until now. Thanks the widespread use of glass cockpits, this fatal stall accident has been extraordinarily well documented by accident investigators and includes a video re-creation.

Cirrus Owner: Tim McGraw

Last May, recording artist and motion picture actor Tim McGraw added a new title to his impressive collection of achievements: Cirrus Pilot. Like many of you, he uses his Cirrus for so many activities in his life - and enjoys the luxury that is flying a Cirrus Aircraft. Little more introduction is required, we will let Tim tell it from his point of view. Enjoy!

Cirrus SR20 Landing CQX 2-13-10.mov

This video shows the approach and landing on runway 24 at Chatham Municipal Airport (CQX) at Chatham Massachusetts on Cape Cod. It was a very nice winter day with light winds and a high thinning overcast as I flew from Norwood down to Chatham. The flight down was from Norwood to Plymouth (OWD to PYM) and then across a corner of the Cape Cod Bay. This route took me north of the Cape Cod Canal and the airspaces for both the Cape Cod Coast Guard Air Station (FMH) and Barnstable Municipal-Boardman/Polando Field in Hyannis (HYA). This video starts during the approach to the left downwind pattern for runway 24. It was my first time at Chatham and I probably stayed a touch high and fast on the way in, due to the hills, trees and water tanks. Probably could have made some adjustments, but as this was a new airport for me, I think I kept it hot. So as you will see there is a good amount of float on this landing while I burned off some speed. The touchdown was soft and in general it was a nice approach and landing, but as usually plenty to learn from. There are three cameras on this video and I experimented with some different placements. The main nose camera is up near the front window for a wide angle view of final approach. The secondary camera gives a bit of forward view, but is mostly aimed at me and the panel. And the third and smaller camera is looking off the wing. Not sure I would go with this arrangement every time, but its a good option for a change. I placed one elbow ...

The Cirrus Perspective. An EVS-600 on a cirrus SR22 and go along for the ride as we demonstrate the system at night. The EVS-600 offers pilots of General Aviation aircraft to see and prevent runway incursions by clearly identifying runways, taxiways, buildings, parked aircraft, and people while taxiing, taking off and landing during night time and low visibility. Runways, buildings, clouds, lakes, and fields can be identified while airborne on approach, greatly enhancing situational awareness and pilot safety during critical flight operations. Cirrus SR20 OWD to PSM 5-1-11

This video is a real time trip in an SR20 from take-off at Norwood, MA to landing at Portsmouth, NH. It begins as I work through a final checklist before take-off on Runway 10 at OWD. I believe I was taking my time before calling the tower because another plane had just landed but had not cleared the runway... also perhaps because there was no one behind me. I took off on Runway 10, then banked north on my way to Portsmouth or Pease (PSM). On this flight as I do with all my cross-countries, I used Flight Following so you'll get to hear a few hand-offs and a lot of ATC calls. There are also a few traffic warnings along the way which make for some interesting listening. I get cleared through the Hanscom airspace (BED) and then climb a bit and head northeast to PSM. The controller there had some calls that I'd never heard (unique phrases), but it all made sense and the landing was a nice one. I love heading into those large runway airports where the site picture makes everything seem like it's gone into slow motion. There are three HD cameras and ATC audio on this video and I should note that I had my squelch set wrong, so you can't really hear the first hand-off from Norwood to Boston soon after take-off. I eventually adjusted the squelch after just a few minutes, but for the early part of the video I tried to edit around the open mic cockpit noise to minimize the impact. Enjoy!

Cirrus SR20 landing 3B0 12-19-09.mov

After about a month of weather delays from late November to early December, I finally managed to get the plane and the weather to cooperate with my schedule. I had planned to meet some friends (flying from the New York area) at Brainard in Connecticut, with me making a stop along the way at Southbridge, MA. When the beginnings of a major storm grounded my friends, I decided to head west anyway and make that stop in Southbridge (3B0) as planned. It would be a new airport for me and one that a friend had recommended for both its proximity to Norwood and its nice little restaurant. I was basically heading due west as I approached 3B0 and the winds were light but out of the north, which favored runway 02. So I stayed to the north and got west of the airport to position for the 45 for the left downwind to 02. This video starts with my call on the 45 and the airport clearly ahead. Again this is a two camera HD shoot with radio comms included. You'll hear some radio from nearby airports using the same frequency, but Southbridge was basically quiet on this day before the snowstorm, so you'll mostly hear me. The landing was fine although I could have held it off a little longer. The pattern was pretty good although you'll hear me mention that I'm a little low just after abeam the numbers which I corrected. Because of the main camera placement on this flight, you should be able to read some of the instruments for altitude and airspeed etc. A nice flight into a nice little airport ...

Cirrus SR20 Landing OWD 1-16-10.mov

This video is the return trip from the meet-up at New Bedford in the SR20 on January 16, 2010. Its a short clip starting with the second call-up to the OWD tower two miles out. There are only two cameras in this clip and the audio is not as clear as I would like, but the HD looks good and since I had it recorded, Im sharing it anyway. Also, for some reason there was a constant hum on the tower frequency possibly due to an incorrect squelch setting. I have left the important communications up full, but the rest of the usual cockpit commentary is at a lower volume to minimize that constant static. This landing was better than the firm one earlier that day at EWB, but for some reason I carried some excess power after the roundout. Didnt really notice it at the time, but its clear in the replay. The touchdown was fine but there was probably no need to float as long as I did. As usual, this video is good for me to learn from and hopefully youll get something out of watching it too.

Jolene's Cirrus R-22; June 12, 2011

2011 Cirrus R-22 Available for charter. Pilot Joe, Martin & Harold fly from Portland, TN, to Bowling Green, KY. June 12, 2011. My buddy Martin has a very unique wife. In December Jolene bought a brand new Cirrus SR-22 aircraft and has it flying in a joint venture arrangement with an FAA Part 135 Charter operation as well as an FAA Part 91 rental program. The plane is based out of Indianapolis Executive Airport (KTYQ). She turned her dream into reality. Wow, what an airplane. Yesterday Martin and their charter pilot Joe were flying past Bowling Green so I caught a ride for about 30 miles of the trip. What fun. Jolene, thanks for allowing me to catch a hop in your airplane. It was marvelous! Harold. Videographer: Harold Biebel, from the back seat. haroldbiebel@me.com
