NorNag Tsendep - "Ser Gyi Nyima (Golden Sun)" Changthang Naqu Nomadic Song

Ser Gi Nyima ( Golden Sun ). Nagqu with a population of 300000, is located in the northern part of Tibet. It is embraced by the Tanggula, Nyainqentanglha, and Kangdese Mountains and the snow-capped Dargo Mountain in the west and the Burgyi Mountain in the east, guarding the treasure land like two ferocious lions. Covering an area of some 400000 square kilometers, Nagqu is generally referred to as Changtang; the area is high in the west and lies at an elevation of over 4500 meters and low in the east. The vast region of the central west is basically flat but dotted with hills and numerous lakes, and is crisscrossed by rivers. There are high mountains surrounding the river valleys in the east, which is the farming region of northern Tibet. This area lies at an elevation of from 3500 to 4500 meters and also has forest resources and bush pasture, and a climate that is more equitable than that in the central west. Nagchu (Chinese: Naqu) is one of the highest, coldest and most windswept towns in Tibet. It is still an important pit stop on the road between Qinghai and Tibet. Nagqu is also on the Qinghai-Tibet railway line. It's a literally breathtaking place. Oxygen levels here is only 60%. Nagchu Horse Racing Festival (Aug 10-16) - thousands of nomads, monks, and pilgrims cross the high passes and ride into the town of Nagchu for a week of horse races, archery, horsemanship, and general revelry. A Shawl To Die For

'A Shawl To Die For' traces the ancient handicraft of Shahtoosh weaving in Kashmir, India and tracks its link to the Tibetan antelope or Chiru found on the Chang Tang plateau in China. It establishes that shahtoosh is, in fact the fleece of the chiru, which is killed to extract this fibre. The international ban on Shahtoosh was critical for the survival of thee endangered Chiru, but it also spelt disaster for thousands of traditional Shahtoosh workers in Kashmir. The film explores this grim struggle between conservation and livelihood.

Lah Soh Lom! (Part 4 of 4) The First Descent of Tibet's Tsenge He River

Part 4: Tsenge He Pull-out Road Trip to Lhasa via the Raka Tsnag Po River. It would take three very long days of driving to make it from the Senge He take-out to above the dam to the town of Sangsang over some of the highest road passes on the planet. The first night of this epic little road trip ended in Gertze on the southern edge of an area called the Chang Tang, a region of large lakes set aside to preserve breeding grounds of an endangered antelope called the "Chiru." Passing through high-desert plateau, the second night outbound to the Raka Tsang Po found us the town of Tsochen while a Tibetan rodeo was underway; this annual festival draws family groups of nomadic herders in from afar for three days of horse racing, food, traditional dancing -- and lots of fashionable Tibetan-nomad flirting. Eventually, we dropped the duckies in a spot along the Raka Tsang Po River dubbed the "Happy City Rapids." Thus began a three-day, scenic 60-mile paddle along the Raka Tsang Po River amidst some of the most beautiful scenery imaginable.
