Turlough O'Carolan was an irish harpist who lived in the mid-1600s and wrote pieces for the people he met and stayed with - playing music in exchange for hospitality. Tradition has it that the harp was played last thing at night, before people went to bed. The building I'm playing it in was a bakery built around 1790, serving the local houses. The bread oven is in the stone wall behind me, and the building has a new floor and triple-glazing on the windows. It's a great mixture of old and new and a great place to play this music. Appropriately, I recorded this piece very late one night, and just went with the first take so the playing has the odd rough bits. I like to think that's authentic - apparently Carolan never played the same way twice. Bet he never had as much trouble as I did finding DivX codecs, either! Only the melodies survive, so I've done this arrangement myself and I'm playing it here on a Pilgrim gut-strung harp. The arrangement and video is my copyright. You are welcome to learn and play the arrangement (by ear - I haven't written it down!) if you like it - but please credit me if you play it in public. If you like it, I'll post more music. To make the recording I used a Sony 3-CCD camera direct to hard disk, with one audio take, noise-reduced in Cool Edit Pro, with Adobe Premiere Pro to edit the visuals together. My arrangement of Sí Bheag, Sí Mhór was inspired by the bluebells in our local wood - where I recorded this version. The flowers are beautiful and I hope you enjoy the music. Sí Bheag, Sí Mhór is about a battle between two tribes of fairies - and the bluebell forest seems appropriate. I've used "bell-like" sounds in the music. Last week my partner on flute George Tortorelli and I just finished a lunchtime concert on the grounds and passed by this cute little building. Noone was around so we brought in our instruments to just hear the natural sound of the high ceilings. So here I am spontanious and improvising.

Anastassia Papisova is the first to independently master the Celtic (Irish) harp in Russia. She has performed in such famous Celtic music bands as the «Slua Si» and «Si Mhor». She is among the founders of the "Mervent" project and was part of it until recently. "By a Woodland Stream" was written by Sarah as a 'classical' piece for Celtic Harp. It is in the style of Marcel Tournier from the turn of the last Century. He taught Sarahs' Teacher, Renata Scheffel-Stein, so the piece has a link to the past. Featuring Grainne Hambly and William Jackson. Presented by the Blue Ridge Irish Music School on Saturday March 31st, 2007. Both Grainne and William play the Harp, however, you will see William play the Bouzouki and the Whistle as well. Grainne adds in the Concertina on a song also. A Bouzouki (as defined by Wikipedia) is the mainstay of modern Greek music as well as other Balkan folk music, particularly of Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is also found in Irish music. It is a stringed instrument with a pear-shaped body and a very long neck. The bouzouki is a member of the 'long neck lute' family and is similar to a mandola. The front of the body is flat and is usually heavily inlaid with mother-of-pearl. A Concertina (as defined by Wikipedia), like the various accordions, is a member of the free-reed family of instruments. It was invented in 1844 by Sir Charles Wheatstone. Concertinas typically have buttons on both ends and are distinguished from an accordion (piano or button) by the direction of their button travel when pushed. Concertina buttons travel in the same direction as the bellows whereas accordion buttons travel perpendicular to the direction of the bellows.
Lisa Lynne & George Tortorelli were playing a daytime concert at University of Gainesville on March 9, 2009 On the way out of the grounds they saw a small chapel type venue right on the lake. It serves for special performances and meetings at the University. No one was around so we brought our instruments in and took advantage of the high ceiling, beautiful sound and sunny blue day. The sound you hear is totally natural, no effects. I recorded it with my little digital zoom recorder and we just left it as is. So this is it, an improvised piece in Em. The real deal.

Anastassia Papisova is the first to independently master the Celtic (Irish) harp in Russia. She began to learn playing the harp all by herself; because she was impressed by the music of Alan Stivell and Clannad. Celtic harps were then just not available in Russia. She was lucky, however: a friend of hers moved to France and was able to get her a harp. Not surprisingly she was unable to find a teacher but she found how the harp was tuned on the Internet. In addition to solo performing, Alex loves to play Celtic music with his brothers Sam on the Fiddle and Simeon on the cello. As teens, they formed the band Kirkmount and if you're lucky, you can still catch the whole group performing at Celtic and Folk festivals from time to time. It's sort of a Romeo and Juliet story, but it actually has a happy ending, which I accidentally left off this video...maybe I'll add it later. :) Note: This was a spontaneous arrangement, so it's far from perfect, but I was having fun!
