Charles XII positioned his 8000 men (another 2500 men were garrisoned in the city and would also take part in the battle at a later stage) opposite the besieging Russian army of about 33000 to 35000 troops. Russia had opened their part of the war by invading the Swedish - held territories of Livonia and Estonia. Charles countered this by attacking the Russian besiegers at the Battle of Narva.The Swedish army of ten thousand men was outnumbered almost four to one by the Russians. They starred in together in the 1932 film No Man of Her Own but did not fall in love until 1936, at a chance meeting at a party. They were married in March 1939 and enjoyed a happy marriage together on their farm in Encino. Carole perished in a plane crash near Las Vegas on January 16, 1942.
