Boswell Sisters - Cheek To Cheek (1930)

The Boswell Sisters were a close harmony singing group that attained national prominence in the USA in the 1930s. Sisters Martha Boswell (June 9, 1905 - July 2, 1958), Connee Boswell (December 3, 1907 - October 11, 1976), and Helvetia "Vet" Boswell (May 20, 1911 - November 12, 1988) were raised by a middle-class family on Camp Street in uptown New Orleans, Louisiana. Martha and Connee were born in Kansas City, Missouri. Helvetia was born in Birmingham, Alabama. They came to be well known in New Orleans while still in their early teens, making appearances in local theaters and radio. They made their first recordings for Victor Records in 1925. However, the Boswell Sisters did not attain national attention until they moved to New York City in 1930 and started making national radio broadcasts. After a few recordings with Okeh Records in 1930, they made numerous recordings for Brunswick Records from 1931-1935. These Brunswick records are widely regarded as milestone recordings of vocal jazz. Connee's ingenious reworkings of the melodies and rhythms of popular songs, together with Glenn Miller's hot arrangements, and first rate New York jazz musicians (including The Dorsey Brothers, Benny Goodman, Bunny Berigan, Fulton McGrath, Joe Venuti, Arthur Schutt, Eddie Lang, Joe Tarto, Manny Klein, Dick McDonough, and Carl Kress), made these recordings unlike any others. Melodies were rearranged and slowed down, major keys were changed to minor keys (sometimes in mid-song) and rhythmic ...
Connie Boswell - The Nearness Of You (H. Carmichael), 1940

From Wikipedia: Constance Boswell (December 3, 1907 - October 11, 1976) was an American female vocalist born in Kansas City, Missouri but raised in New Orleans, Louisiana. With her sisters, Martha and Helvetia "Vet" Boswell, she performed in the 1930's as The Boswell Sisters and became a highly influential singing group during this period via recordings and radio. Connee (or Connie) herself is widely considered one of the greatest jazz female vocalists and was a major influence on Ella Fitzgerald. In 1936, all the sisters got married, and Vet and Martha retired. Connie, on the other hand, even though she cut solo albums while with the group, directed her entire focus on her solo career. This collection represents some of her guest appearances in various old time radio shows including Bing Crosby, Command Performance, Good News, Kraft Music Hall, Mail Call, and Screen Guild Theater. "The Nearness Of You" was originally written by Ned Jones and Hoagy Carmichael for the movie "Romance In The Dark" (1937) with Gladys Swarthout and John Boles. Boswell Sisters - The Object Of My Affection

The Boswell parents first settled in Kansas City, where Martha was born in 1905 and Connie in 1907. Helvetia was born in 1911 in Birmingham, Alabama. Connie was involved in an accident that permanently injured her spine. As David McCain tells it, some kids put her in a coaster wagon that went down a hill and hit a telephone pole. Connie was thrown out. At first, she couldn't move at all. These were the days when infantile paralysis was a major threat and through the years it was reported that polio was the cause of Connie's disability. In 1914 the family moved to New Orleans. Father Alfred Boswell, a one time circus performer, was appointed manager of the New Orleans branch of the Fleischman Yeast Company. After Connie's accident, her mother focused on what other family members recall as a natural musical talent. "I couldn't play hopscotch," Connie said in a magazine interview, "so Mom started me on cello." The other girls moved quickly into music as well. All three were trained in the classics by a German music professor in New Orleans, Otto Finck. Martha took piano, Connie continued on cello, and Vet studied violin, but their interest soon went beyond the classics. Vet learned the banjo and though Martha stayed mostly on piano she learned to play sax as well. Connie picked up the saxophone, piano, and guitar. From the beginning, the girls worked together to keep Connie's paralysis from being noticeable. Initially, without even a wheelchair, Vet and Martha would carry ...

"What'd You Do to Me"--The Boswell Sisters

This 1931 recording is one of my favorite Boswell Sisters songs. Not only does it display their lovely harmonies, it also highlights the unexpected changes of tempo and style that typified the "Boswell Sound." Fans of this terrific group--or of Connee's solo career--must not miss www.bozzies.com, which is full of info on both the Sisters and the many performers they've influenced. PS: After previewing this video I was appalled by how YouTube's recompression wrecked a perfectly good set of images (especially the title picture). Any advice on optimizing my uploaded movie so YT won't screw it up will be greatly appreciated.

Gaylord Carter & Connee Boswell

Renowned theatre organist Gaylord Carter swings on the Hammond electric organ as he accompanies the marvelous Connee Boswell (of the Boswell Sisters) singing "I Can't Give You Anything But Love" in this clip from the 1937 MGM short "Sunday Night At The Trocadero". Note: The original soundtrack, as it survives today, is dreadfully bad. This clip has been filtered and evened out to remove noise and improve the overall sound. One astute viewer pointed out that this organ may be the Hammond model "BC", and not the original "A". The console case does seem to be the larger version. The "BC" went into production in 1936, so could have been the one used here.
Martha (M'appari) Connee Boswell

This Snayder Telescript was shot in Connee Boswell's Manhattan Apartment. She made a series of these shorts (the midpoint between "soundies" and MTV) with her dog Rebel. She reprised her 1937 hit "Martha" for this production. Connee Boswell was the first to "swing the classics" and paved the way for everyone from Bea Wain and Larry Clinton to Bobby Darrin. Just another one of the trends that began with a Boswell, but has somehow gotten lost with the passage of time.

The Worst Over Ever???

Scott Boswell's Terror Over... Leicestershire v Somerset, C&G Trophy final, 2001 Is This Worst Over Ever Bowled In First Class Cricket??? SCOTT BOSWELL - Tall with a round-arm slightly slingy action, Scott Boswell played for Northamptonshire while at university and in 1996 was considered promising enough to attend Dennis Lillee's MRF Pace foundation. But he failed to make his mark at Northants and was released at the end of 1998, moving to Leicestershire. He quickly became identified as more of a one-day bowler, and in 2001 played most games as the county finished runners-up in the Sunday League and the C&G final. He had been Leicestershire's champion in the C&G semi-final, cleaning up four England players in a match-winning performance. In the final, the occasion, the Lord's slope and his own sweaty palms undid him. In his second over he sent down eight wides, five of them in a row. His match figures were two overs for 23. These were among Boswell's last deliveries for the county. He played only once more, but he appeared to be a broken man and his one over in the final Sunday League game of the season went for 18 and before he hobbled off. He was released a month later and went into teaching. (From CricInfo)
