Thomas Quasthoff, bass-baritone ("Song to the evening star," Wagner's Tannhauser)

A very nice recording by a very nice voice- sad story. Enjoy. Recorded from radio. Thomas Quasthoff (born November 9, 1959) is a German bass-baritone generally regarded as one of the finest singers of his generation. Although his reputation was initially based on his performance of Romantic lieder, Quasthoff has proven to have a remarkable range from the Baroque cantatas of Bach to solo jazz improvisations. Quasthoff was born in Hildesheim, Germany, with serious birth defects caused by his mother's exposure during pregnancy to the drug thalidomide which was prescribed as an antiemetic to combat her morning sickness. Thomas Quasthoff is unusually short (about four feet tall) due to shortening of the long bones in his legs, and he has phocomelia of the upper extremities with very short or absent long bones and flipper-like appearance of his hands.

Taylor Guitars Baritone

Taylor baritone guitars are designed for playing in a lower register with normal string tension, thanks to a longer 27-inch scale length. Tuned to B (BEADF# B), the deeper acoustic tone is voiced with the GS body shape and a wood combination of Indian rosewood with Sitka spruce. A great choice for singers with a lower vocal range or players who favor a detuned sound, the baritone is offered as either a 6-string or an 8-string with two added octave strings that expand the tonal range.

Female Baritone (I've got a secret, 1960)

I've got a secret: Week 399, 2/3/60 Guest Host: Betsy Panel: Henry, Carol Burnett, Durward Kirby, Bess Program Staff: Hazel Oxholm Lighting: Sal Bonsignore The set is redecorated to add a "feminine touch." Norman Paris plays accordion and piano on stage accompanied by women on harp and double bass. Halbirg Nielsen, Reykjavik: "I have a soprano singing voice ... I also sing tenor and baritone ... I also sing bass." Sings "Ol' Man River" like Paul Robeson and "Ain't Misbehavin'" like Louis Armstrong. The rest of the episode: Some dresses are modeled, and then the models are revealed to have what at the time were male-dominated jobs. May Grayson is a bartender, Loretta Rudney is a Pinkerton private investigator, Margaret Allen is a barber, and Rona Levine is a doorman. Edna McKuen, Phoenix: "My home town voted me Man of the Year" (only female member of the city council). Guest Jean-Pierre Aumont: In response to the "feminine" theme, he claims that one area in which men still have it over women is designing women's fashions. To "prove" this, Henry and Durward are provided with materials from which they are to design dresses for Carol and Bess.

The Other Great Welsh Bass-Baritone

Sir Geraint Evans singing "Oh Diamond Shine" from "The Tales of Hoffmann". This is better known as "Scintille Diamant" from "Les Contes d'Hoffmann". But here it is sung in English. This aria is by Offenbach but it is not originally from Hoffmann. It is from "Le Voyage Dans La Lune". In some modern productions it is now cut. This performance is from a TV broadcast with Michele Molese as Hoffmann. Evans had a range and a repertoire very much like that of Bryn Terfel. Evans was shorter so he played a lot of short guy parts like Papageno and Beckmesser. Terfel being taller, gets to do Sachs and Giovanni. Overall however Evans voice is darker and a little more dramatic than Terfel's. Both have been famous Leporellos and Falstaffs.

Largo al Factotum Cage Match: 14 Baritones Sing the High A

One of the hardest moments of Figaro's entrance aria from the Barber of Seville, what many consider to be the hardest baritone aria...perfect material for a cage match. Here we have 14 baritones attempting the infamous high A. This optional cadenza is left out by many baritones, including many great Figaros (Thomas Allen, for instance. Others hit the cadenza but omit the highest note (ie Robert Merrill). But here is a compilation of baritones with the guts and the balls to sing it all! In chronological order: 1. Riccardo Stracciari (1875-1955) 2. Lawrence Tibbett (1896-1956) 3. Leonard Warren (1911-1960) 4. Gino Bechi (1913-1993) 5. Tito Gobbi (1913-1984) 6. Rolando Panerai (b. 1924) 7. Nicolae Herlea (b. 1927) 8. Hermann Prey (1929-1998) 9. Sherrill Milnes (b. 1935) 10. Leo Nucci (b. 1942) 11. Thomas Hampson (b. 1955) 12. Dmitri Hvorostovsky (b. 1962) 13. Russell Braun (b. 1965) 14. Aaron St. Clair Nicholson And last but not least: 15. Mario del Monaco (1915-1982) --this one is just for fun. No votes for him will count. (more) (less)
