Boot seals are used to protect constant velocity joints and steering mechanisms in automobiles. These flexible components must accommodate the motions associated with angulation of the steering mechanism. Some regions of the boot seal are always in contact with an internal metal shaft, while other areas come into contact with the metal shaft during angulation. In addition, the boot seal may also come into contact with itself, both internally and externally. The contacting regions affect the performance and longevity of the boot seal. In this example the deformation of the boot seal, caused by a typical angular movement of the shaft, is studied. If you have this problem I recommend replacing the seals in the valve cover first and then coming back to recheck for oil in the spark plug wells in about a month or so, if you find oil then I recommend performing this procedure. This is a method of carrying out a temporary or emergency repair of a tap (faucet) gland seal. Basically a small section of water hose ideally from an automotive application is used once the old gland seal has been removed. The small section of hose should be approx the same diameter as the original gland seal with a opening approx same as tap spindle. Careful reaming or drilling can be used if the rubber hose isn't quite the right dimensions. Always clean off any limescale and crud from the tap internals before repairing or replacing seals. IMPORTANT! This is just a guide and is not meant as a permanent method of repair. However if you need to carry out an emergency repair but the shops are shut or you find yourself in a SHTF situation then this method works. We've got a tap with a temporary repair which so far has lasted three years. Please check your local building and water regulations pertaining to working on domestic water systems. As I stated earlier - this method is temporary measure until you can purchase the proper seals. Hope it helps and let us know if you want more information.
