Slightly Germanic and minimalist sounding. Another single night session that I haven't been able to listen to on speakers yet. The Micro Q carries most of the the tune including the kick and snare. I started a patch from scratch for main riff. The bassline is barely audable but that's an original patch too. The rest is presets. The Proteus 2000 handles metal sounds. 1986 Jaguar XJ6 ( Series 3 ) This has a Fuel Injected 4.2L DOHC Inline 6 Cyl making 176 HP while pared to a 3 Speed auto. Wow this car really smelled old inside & it was in overall rough condition. Car had lots of rust sport & bubbling paint, Seats were gone. While there was lots of metal trims & parts in the interior, the plastics used inside were very cheap, flimsy, and just awful. This engine known as the XK6 is a very old engine design with lots of history behind it. Main engine design was introduced in 1949..

This is a quick demo of the arpeggiator of the Proteus 2000 with the XK6 (XL-1) ROM installed. Like the other stuff that I've uploaded to YouTube so far, it was done in single nighttime session. Nice thuddy kick drum that comes from the P2K composer ROM. As I've said before, the P2K without other expansions is a treasure trove of great basses and drum kits, and they're all tweakable too. The other instruments are from the XK6 ROM (from the keyboard version of the XL-1). I didn't do much in the way of realtime tweaking as the patches already had some free-running LFOs defined. I'm not very familiar with the use of arps, so I learned a couple of new tricks. The Arpegiator was set to something like 1,2,3,4,4,3,2,1 and so on. I even attached it to the lead sound. I added some distortion and reverb to the last two instruments. I was trying to emulate some of the sounds from Speak and Spell, on which they did actually play the synths through guitar amps. I don't think it sounds very close. Oh well, next time...

Back in the 70s, a group of antarctic research scientists discovered a Tripod. Through ingenuity and self-sacrifice they were able to destroy it. This is their soundtrack. A single session jam in Cubase. I've got some old songs that I'd like to finish off and share but I want to get back into the swing of things with single sessions like this one first. This one is a bit influenced by some of the recent single session stuff by Zombie Andy - www.youtube.com The sounds are generated with the Proteus 2000 with the XK6 ROM (Xtreme Lead XL-1) alongside my other favorite, the Akai SG01v.

Hundreds of years after the fall of human authority on Earth, a lone she-geek dreams of something better than being capped. One day, the French village that she lives in is captivated with gossip about two young travellers from England who are being held in the local jail. Done over two late night sessions. I have a feeling that I started to ruin it when as I added more and more. Never mind. I'm still finding my feet and trying to get back into practice with nightly sessions. Ambient Drone
Another single session tune. The main influences were the Portal soundtrack and the introduction to Rush by Depeche Mode (live version). In a way, these tunes are like one of those fat blogs. I keep posting them up to embarrass myself into getting properly back into practice. This one is an ambient drone tune. Drone tunes are difficult because it's the art of doing as little as possible. A good drone tune is usually a few keys held down. As soon as you start coming up with riffs and melodic ideas, it ceases to function as a drone. The opening two notes are from a preset on the Proteus 2000 (XK6/XL-1 ROM). The rest comes from the Waldorf Micro Q. The quality should be a little bit better than the other tunes on this channel. Before, I was using the 16 bit input on a Yamaha SW1000XG soundcard in order to free up the main inputs in on the M-Audio 2496. However, I've seen the light and picked up second 2496 now. Much better quality. The sound is processed through the old live mixing desk that I use (car boot find) with a bit of low and high EQ.

Cray wins contract from ORNL for Titan supercomputer The US Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory has awarded a contract to Cray Inc. to increase the Jaguar supercomputer's science impact and energy efficiency. The upgrade, which will provide advanced capabilities in modeling and simulation, will transform the DOE Office of Science-supported Cray XT5 system, currently capable of 2.3 million billion calculations per second, into a Cray XK6 system with a peak speed between 10 and 20 petaflops. The new system will employ the latest AMD Opteron central processing units as well as NVIDIA Tesla graphics processing units. The last phase of the upgrade is expected to be completed in late 2012. The system, which will be known as Titan, will be ready for users in early 2013. ORNL is managed by UT-Battelle for the Office of Science.
