Roll on Columbia: Woody Guthrie

In spring 1941, the cusp of the Great Depression and Pearl Harbor, a 28 year old, unemployed Dust Bowl balladeer, Woodrow Wilson Guthrie took a one month, temporary job with the US Department of the Interior's Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) on the Columbia River. The BPA needed a folksinger to promote the benefits of building dams to produce cheap electricity. Guthrie, and his wife and 3 kids needed the paycheck. He wrote 26 songs in 30 days - classics like Roll on Columbia and Pastures of Plenty. This documentary is the story of the most prolific moment in Guthrie's extraordinary career. Woody Guthrie -- Two Good Men

Throughout his career, Woody Guthrie experimented with various lyrical and musical styles. However, his best work invariably came from writing and singing about the causes and the people that he felt closest to: the workers, the unions, the poor dust bowl farmers, the downtrodden, and the oppressed. The album, Hard Travelin' includes this song, "Two Good Men" --about Sacco and Vanzetti, two immigrants executed for murder after an indictment and a trial that was inspired by politics and greed. The story of Sacco and Vanzetti still carries an ominous message. For those Americans concerned about the erosion of workers rights, the suspension of Habeas Corpus, the abandonment of the Geneva Conventions, unwarranted surveillance, and the imprisonment of alleged criminals without the right to a fair and speedy trial, the story of Sacco and Vanzetti should remain an ever-present reminder of our perilous times. -- Spadecaller

Woody Guthrie - Dust Bowl Blues

www.woodyguthrie.org Woodrow Wilson "Woody" Guthrie (July 14, 1912 October 3, 1967) is best known as an American singer-songwriter and folk musician, whose musical legacy includes hundreds of political, traditional and children's songs, ballads and improvised works. He frequently performed with the slogan This Machine Kills Fascists displayed on his guitar. His best-known song is "This Land Is Your Land", which is regularly sung in American schools. Many of his recorded songs are archived in the Library of Congress. Guthrie traveled with migrant workers from Oklahoma to California and learned traditional folk and blues songs. Many of his songs are about his experiences in the Dust Bowl era during the Great Depression, earning him the nickname the "Dust Bowl Troubadour". Throughout his life Guthrie was associated with United States communist groups, though he was never an actual member of any. Guthrie was married three times and fathered eight children, including American folk musician Arlo Guthrie. He is the grandfather of musician Sarah Lee Guthrie.Guthrie died from complications of Huntington's disease, a progressive genetic neurological disorder. During his later years, in spite of his illness, Guthrie served as a figurehead in the folk movement, providing inspiration to a generation of new folk musicians, including mentor relationships with Ramblin' Jack Elliott and Bob Dylan. In 1997, Woody Guthrie was inducted into the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame

Woody Guthrie: Voice of the Common Man

Written and produced by Melissa Mergner in 2006, when she was a 14-year-old high school student, Woody Guthrie -- Voice of the Common Man is a short documentary about how the folk singer-songwriter overcame personal hardship and tragedy to become a spokesman for those Americans affected by the Great Depression and the dust storms. Although neither a politician nor activist, Guthrie brought attention to the plight of Okies, migrant workers and other disenfranchised people. He gave music a social conscience and influenced several generations of singer-songwriters, including Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Billy Bragg, Steve Earle, John Mellencamp, Ani DiFranco and Jeff Tweedy. The film uses Guthrie's own voice from Library of Congress recordings, as well as archival footage from the '30s. Soundtrack by Richard Drueding.

Woody Guthrie - Jolly Banker

Woody Guthrie - Jolly Banker Jolly Banker by Woody Guthrie My name is Tom Cranker and I'm a jolly banker, I'm a jolly banker, jolly banker am I. I safeguard the farmers and widows and orphans, Singin' I'm a jolly banker, jolly banker am I. When dust storms are sailing, and crops they are failing, I'm a jolly banker, jolly banker am I. I check up your shortage and bring down your mortgage, Singin' I'm a jolly banker, jolly banker am I. When money you're needing, and mouths you are feeding, I'm a jolly banker, jolly banker am I. I'll plaster your home with a furniture loan, Singin' I'm a jolly banker, jolly banker am I. If you show me you need it, I'll let you have credit, I'm a jolly banker, jolly banker am I. Just bring me back two for the one I lend you, Singin' I'm a jolly banker, jolly banker am I. When your car you're losin', and sadly your cruisin', I'm a jolly banker, jolly banker am I. I'll come and forclose, get your car and your clothes, Singin' I'm a jolly banker, jolly banker am I. When the bugs get your cotton, the times they are rotten, I'm a jolly banker, jolly banker am I. I'll come down and help you, I'll rake you and scalp you, Singin' I'm a jolly banker, jolly banker am I. When the landlords abuse you, or sadly misuse you, I'm a jolly banker, jolly banker am I. I'll send down the police chief to keep you from mischief, Singin' I'm a jolly banker, jolly banker am I.

Woody Guthrie (Live July 7, 1944)

This rare segment of BBC Radio's Children's Hour features a brief interview with folk singer Woody Guthrie. He recorded "The Wabash Cannonball" and "900 Miles" for this broadcast. Woody was a Merchant Marine, washing dishes on a Liberty Ship, the troop ship Sea Porpoise which carried troops to the Normandy beach in early July 1944. After the troops were sent ashore, the ship hit a mine but made its way back to England; Woody was routed through London toward Glasgow, Scotland, toward the United States. On a song manuscript dated "July 13th, 1944", Woody wrote, "this train is carrying me outside from London now; on up towards Belfast, and Glasgow." While in London, he went to the offices of the BBC where he introduced himself as a member of The Martins and the Coys and was given the opportunity to sing on the Children's Hour. After an autobiographical statement, he was recorded singing with his guitar accompaniment two railroad songs.
