Synagogue vandalism in Ramle, Israel: Arson at Synagogue condemned by Anti-Defamation League

In the Israeli town of Ramle, a recent fire at a synagogue has caused tension between police and the local Jewish population. One rabbi has said the fire was an act of arson, whilst police have maintained that it was caused by a short circuit. Jewish residents have complained that the authorities are afraid to confront terrorism against Jews in the town. The fire came ahead of remarks from Israel's President Shimon Peres, who took to the stage at a meeting of Christian community leaders in Jaffa, to reaffirm Israel's commitment to the individual's right of worship. He says, "We shall defend the holy places of every religion, whether it is a church, or a mosque or a synagogue. We have to respect everybody there, defend his right to be free to believe, to be free to pray, to be safe in his holy site." Meanwhile, across the globe in the US, synagogue vandalism is also causing a stir. This time, white supremacist symbols and swastikas were found on a synagogue in New Jersey, in what is the second attack of its kind in recent days in the area. The Anti-Defamation League condemned the attack, saying that Jews should be celebrating the festival of Hanukkah and not cleaning symbols of hatred off their places of worship.
