USNS Megar Evers was named for civil rights leader Medgar Evers who was murdered on June 12, 1963 in Jackson Mississippi. This is part of the powerful speech delivered by Medgar's widow Myrlie Evers-Williams at the USNS Medgar Evers Ship Christening ceremony November 12, 2011 in San Diego CA. Myrlie said: "Megar Evers never asked for glory, he never asked to be out front and acknowledged. He did it because he was willing to make the sacrifice that all of us might move forward regardless of race, creed or color" Myrlie also said: "The raindrops are all the tears of joy of all the people that have fought so long and so hard to see us were we are today. Those are not tears of sorrow, but tears of joy. Let the Rain Come Down, its all right" Video by Ed Hendrickson Jr.
