THEATER HISTORY: The original Blowing Rock Stage Company Founder and Theatre Producer-Director Mark Wilson is interviewed by veteran broadcast personality Tim Baxter. Wilson brought the visionary proposal to start a new tradition of theatre excellence to the town of Blowing Rock, North Carolina in 1986 - a bold professional model in the tradition of Flat Rock Playhouse and the Barter Theatre. In this video, Mark's outlines in 90 focused seconds the dynamics of targeting the audience, making the mission clear and important personally for the viewer, and providing direction for Blowing Rock theater's meteoric success. His infectious enthusiasm and authoritative positivity was credible and sincere. (But what was he thinking with that "mullet" hair back in '94? ...Cue the old Magnum PI theme song!) Mark was a powerful promoter, communicator, salesman, educator and motivator. Oscar Hammerstein said: "I think only people in the theatre know what a producer is. The public does not know. It knows a writer writes, and an actor acts, and a director tells them what to do. A producer raises money. Well, in some cases that's all he does. But the workers in the theatre know that this is not the real thing. A producer is a rare, paradoxical genius - hardheaded, soft-hearted, cautious, reckless, a hopeful innocent in fair weather, a stern pilot in stormy weather, a mathematician who prefers to ignore the laws of mathematics and trust intuition, an idealist, a realist, a practical dreamer, a sophisticated gambler, a stage struck child. THEATER HISTORY: Founder Mark Wilson Produced and Directed Gurney's LOVE LETTERS in summer of 1993, bringing celebrated movie actor Wilford Brimley to the stage on the night before his John Grisham movie THE FIRM opened to nationwide summer box office acclaim with co-star Tom Cruise. (Click the "HQ" button for better quality on YouTube.) This was Mr. Brimley's first stage play, and he appeared alongside actress Cynthia Magallon. 16 performances were sold out. Wilford Brimley previously starred in movies COCOON, THE CHINA SYNDROME, THE NATURAL, ABSENCE OF MALICE, THE ELECTRIC HORSEMAN and television series THE WALTONS and OUR HOUSE. He is exactly what he seems, a down-to-earth western gentleman. His presence on stage was powerful, he filled the house, and he made many friends. And he called Wilson a "tough horse trader", a high compliment from an authentic rancher and horse wrangler.
