The Specials - Ghost Town (TOTP)

The Specials lip syncing their classic number one single Ghost Town on Top Of the Pops in july 1981. UK 2 Tone CHS TT17 7" Released: 20 June 1981 A side Ghost Town B side Why? Friday Night, Saturday Morning Ghost Town marked the pinnacle of the labels achievements. Critics have called it "one of few singles to reflect perfectly a period in history" and "one of the most important records of our time". Released at a time when Prince Charles and Lady Diana were about to marry and inner city riots swept Britain the single summed up perfectly the irony of the whole period. It stayed on the number 1 spot for 3 weeks and became the labels first single to sell a million copies and also marked the first UK 12 inch from 2 Tone. With the exception of Dance Craze 2 Tone had been very quiet throughout the first half of 1981 and friction was becoming apparent within the Specials camp. According to Terry Hall the recording of the single was dogged by bad feeling among the various band members even getting to the stage were they wouldn't go into the studio together. The arrangements of the singles' others tracks also caused ill feeling. Terry Hall would have preferred his composition Friday Night Saturday Morning to have consisted of just him and a piano in a pub sing-a-long type fashion but in the end he had to make do with version which was released. The structure of the song Ghost Town has also been a topic of conversation. The typical format of verse-chorus-verse was set aside in ...

Everything She Wants by Wham! - Top Of The Pops

January 1st 1985. In the week after Christmas, Wham! reminded the record buying public that their 1984 Christmas single was a double A side so instead of performing (miming) to a song at least a week out of date, they performed a remixed version of one of their album tracks which happened to be on the flipside of Last Christmas. This is also one of the last times old George appeared in public without facial hair - not that it's of any importance whatsoever!

Roxy Music - Virginia Plain (Live TOTP 1972)

"Virginia Plain" is a song written in 1972 by Bryan Ferry. It was recorded by his band Roxy Music and became their first single, backed with "The Numberer" (an instrumental composed by Andy Mackay). It became a Top 10 hit in the UK, peaking at #4. The song was not present on the original UK LP version of the band's debut, Roxy Music, and had not even been recorded when the album was released. After the success of the album in the UK, it was included on later reissues. In 1977, it was re-released as a single, together with "Pyjamarama", originally the second Roxy Music single, to promote their Greatest Hits album, and reached #11. "Virginia Plain" features bass guitarist Rik Kenton, who joined after Graham Simpson left the band. It begins with a deceptively quiet introduction, followed by an instant increase of volume as soon as the vocals come in on the first verse, this apparently being a deliberate ploy by Bryan Ferry to trap unwary radio and club DJs. The song was also notable at the time for its lack of chorus and for its synthesizer work by Brian Eno. Former art student Ferry took the title "Virginia Plain" from one of his own paintings, featuring images of the cigarette brand of the same name and Warhol superstar Baby Jane Holzer. Holzer is also referenced in the lyric, "Baby Jane's in Acapulco / We are flying down to Rio". ______________________________________ Roxy Music is an English art rock group founded in the early 1970s by art school graduate Bryan Ferry ...

Sniff 'n' the Tears - Driver's Seat TOTP - Jun 79 (Hi Qual)

DJ Steve Wright's all-time favourite record, and also a favourite of mine. When I first heard it, I did not realize it was from the late 70's, as it still sounds fresh today. Although a world-wide hit, amazingly it failed to reach the UK Top 40, due to reasons mentioned below. Sniff 'n' the Tears is a British rock band perhaps best known for their song "Driver's Seat", a hit in many countries (including number eleven on the American Billboard Hot 100 chart). The exception was the UK itself where a problem with EMI's pressing plant meant that the single was not available following the band's appearance on Top of the Pops and it peaked just outside the Top 40. Fickle Heart, the album containing "Driver's Seat", was followed by three more for the Chiswick record label: The Game's Up (1980), Love/Action (1981), and Ride Blue Divide (1982). Singer and songwriter Paul Roberts went on to make two solo albums for Sonet Records, City Without Walls (1985) and Kettle Drum Blues (1987). When an advertising campaign saw "Driver's Seat" top the Dutch charts in 1992, Roberts took Sniff 'n' the Tears out on the road in the Netherlands and Germany, followed by a new album No Damage Done. Since then Roberts put out one more record, 2001's Underground, and is currently working on new material. "Driver's Seat" was featured on the soundtrack to the 1997 film, Boogie Nights. The band has various musicians, but the original member is lead singer and songwriter Paul Roberts.

TOTP - This Charming Man - The Smiths

www.indiemusicfinds.com The Smiths performing This Charming Man on Top of the Pops in 1983. I'm surprised no-one's uploaded this already. Morrissey wasn't happy about having to pretend to lip-sync so he carried on a bunch of gladioli instead of a mic.
