Igor Stravinsky: Symphonies Of Wind Instruments (1920)
Netherlands Wind Ensemble, Reinbert De Leeuw, conductor Igor Stravinsky's "Symphonies of Wind for Instruments", a piece he composed in 1920 in memory of Claude Debussy. It is the last major work in his characteristic Russian style. He had just moved his family from Biarritz to Brittany, but spent much time in Paris composing. Gabrille Chanel let him use her house in the suburbs, and the Pleyel company let him use a studio in their piano warehouse. the famed conductor Serge Koussevitzky conducted one of the first performances of "Symphonies", rather disasterously, and Stravinsky later said "Koussevitzky executed the work, in firing-squad fashion". Igor Stravinsky (1882 - 1971): Symphonies of Wind Instruments at the end is a little clip of Robert Craft speaking of the letter he wrote to Stravinsky concerning "Symphonies"

Rare. Rene Leibowitz conducts The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (1962) Rene Leibowitz (1913-1972) was born in Warsaw but moved to Paris in his teens and there began a long, illustrious conducting career. Particularly interested in contemporary music, he studied with Webern and Schoenberg and wrote a detailed analysis of twelve-tone music. A keen ear for instrumental coloration (Ravel was his orchestration teacher) was evident in his kaleidoscopic transcriptions of such works as Bach's Passacaglia and Fugue in C (for double orchestra!). Presto Performed by The English Concert Directed by Trevor Pinnock *Symphony No. 35 in D major, K. 385 was composed in 1782 and is also called the Haffner Symphony. It was commissioned by the Haffners, a prominent Salzburg family, for the occasion of Sigmund Haffner's ennoblement. The Haffner Symphony should not be confused with the Haffner Serenade, another piece Mozart wrote on commission from the same family. The Haffner Serenade, K. 250, is in eight movements and was composed six years earlier in 1776. The Haffner Symphony did not start its life as a symphony, but rather as a serenade to be used as background music for the ennoblement of Sigmund Haffner. The Mozarts knew the Haffners through Sigmund Haffner's father, also Sigmund Haffner, who had been mayor of Salzburg and who had helped them out on their early tours of Europe. The elder Haffner died in 1772, but the families remained in contact. In 1776, the younger Haffner commissioned a serenade for the wedding of Marie Elizabeth Haffner to Franz Xavier Spath. This work became the famous Haffner Serenade which was so successful that, when the younger Sigmund Haffner was to be ennobled, it was only natural that Mozart was called upon to write the music for the occasion. Disney '36 - Silly Symphony - The Country Cousin
A Walt Disney SILLY SYMPHONY Cartoon Short. Morty Citymouse invites his cousin Abner Countrymouse for a visit and shows him the ways of the big city, including traps, eating quietly, and busy traffic. The SILLY SYMPHONIES, which Walt Disney produced for a ten year period beginning in 1929, are among the most fascinating of all animated series. Unlike the Mickey Mouse cartoons in which action was paramount, with the Symphonies the action was made to fit the music. There was little plot in the early Symphonies, which featured lively inanimate objects and anthropomorphic plants & animals, all moving frantically to the soundtrack. Gradually, however, the Symphonies became the school where Walt's animators learned to work with color and began to experiment with plot, characterization & photographic special effects. The pages of Fable & Fairy Tale, Myth & Mother Goose were all mined to provide story lines and even Hollywood's musicals & celebrities were effectively spoofed. It was from this rich soil that Disney's feature-length animation was to spring. In 1939, with SNOW WHITE successfully behind him and PINOCCHIO & FANTASIA on the near horizon, Walt phased out the SILLY SYMPHONIES; they had run their course & served their purpose.
