This is an extract from one of only two recordings made by Sir Adrain Boult with this orchestra, the other is Kikimora by Liadov. Both recordings can be downloaded at beulahextra.eavb.co.uk Boult recorded A Shropshire lad four times. This is his second recording made on 5 March 1942 in the Houldsworth Hall, Manchester. Producer Walter Legge, engineer Arthur S. Clarke.

'Loveliest Of Trees' (excerpt), composed by George Butterworth (1885-1916, first photo) to a poem by AE Housman, sung by baritone John Shirley-Quirk, with Martin Isepp, piano; on a Saga long-play disc, number XID5260, issued in 1966. And 'A Shropshire Lad', Rhapsody For Full Orchestra, Sir Adrian Boult (second photo, at a 1949 studio session) conducting the London Philharmonic Orchestra; a British Decca recording, made in 1954, issued in the United States on London long-play disc LL1169. I have arranged the two works in sequence because Butterworth took the principal theme of his Rhapsody from this song, initially titling the second work 'Cherry Tree Prelude'. On the cover sheet of the printed score (shown here), Butterworth calls the Rhapsody "an orchestral epilogue to [his] two sets of songs, [based on] Mr. AE Housman's poem 'A Shropshire Lad'." 'A Shropshire Lad' was premiered at the Leeds Festival in 1913. 'Is My Team Ploughing?', also a setting of a Housman poem, may be heard in my previous Butterworth YouTube posting, along with the setting by Butterworth's friend Rafe [Ralph] Vaughan Williams.

Back in my university days I would ride from Priorslee Halls (NE Telford) along the South Telford Heritage Trail, past Blists Hill museum to the beautiful Iron Bridge Gorge. It was a most pleasant experience to sit in one of the cafe's by the riverside, drinking a nice cup of coffee and a slice of morish apple pie. The Historical Iron Bridge along with many other interesting sights in the Iron Bridge Gorge area make a terrific day out for the whole family. By David Goorney

In one area of North Shropshire there has been a huge increase in UFO sightings. One man, Professor Friese, has travelled from Germany to investigate. Will he solve the mystery of the Shropshire Triangle?

The last passenger carrying train for Wrexham & Shropshire arrives at Wrexham at app. 22:30 on 28th January 2011. After arrival it leaves the station for the goods loop to return to the no.2 bay siding where many farewells were said and tears shed. I can only hope that the loss of 53 jobs can be justified by the use of the stock on other prmier services which will come under the DB Shencker umbrella.

RAF Cosford opened in 1938 as a joint aircraft maintenance, storage and technical training unit. It has remained mainly a training unit to this day. The Fulton Mess barrack block was constructed just before WW2 as the largest single building barrack block in the UK. It is now used for technical training. Admission is free to the museum, which houses 70 aircraft and is home to War Planes, Missiles, Transport & Training and Research & Development collections. The National Cold War Exhibition with its interactive kiosks and hotspots gives visitors a chance to see what life was like behind the Iron Curtain.

Part 1/2 of George Butterworth's "Six Songs from A Shropshire Lad" (settings of Housman's poems) Thomas Allen, baritone Geoffrey Parsons, piano Paris, 2 March 1981 This recording was my introduction to this wonderful song cycle. Magnificent poetry, magnificent settings and magnificent performance... 1. Loveliest of Trees Loveliest of trees, the cherry now Is hung with bloom along the bough, And stands about the woodland ride Wearing white for Eastertide. Now, of my threescore years and ten, Twenty will not come again, And take from seventy springs a score, It only leaves me fifty more. And since to look at things in bloom Fifty springs are little room, About the woodlands I will go To see the cherry hung with snow. 2. When I was one-and-twenty When I was one-and-twenty I heard a wise man say, "Give crowns and pounds and guineas But not your heart away; Give pearls away and rubies But keep your fancy free." But I was one-and-twenty, No use to talk to me. When I was one-and-twenty I heard him say again, "The heart out of the bosom Was never given in vain; 'Tis paid with sighs a plenty And sold for endless rue." And I am two-and-twenty, And oh, 'tis true, 'tis true. 3. Look not in my eyes Look not in my eyes, for fear They mirror true the sight I see, And there you find your face too clear And love it and be lost like me. One the long nights through must lie Spent in star-defeated sighs, But why should you as well as I Perish? Gaze not in my eyes. A Grecian lad, as I hear ...
