This is clarification on how to remove the lower unit of my 50 HP Mercury Outboard. In my opinion the most puzzling part is not finding and removing the 5 screws, it is actually figuring out how to remove the shift shaft (aka shift linkage). No other videos explain it on a Mercury very well so that is the purpose of this video. Step 1 - Accessing the Shift Shaft/Shift Linkage: Per Mercury the shift shaft/shift linkage is made of four parts: a threaded lower shift shaft, the M10 lower lock nut, the M10 coupler and the threaded upper shift shaft. The lock nut and coupler can both be accessed through the 2" opening in the drive shaft housing just a few inches above where the lower unit bolts on. There is no need to even take the cowling off in this process. Step 2 - Exposing the Shift Shaft Nut and Coupler: On my motor I put the remote just barely into the forward position to expose the lower lock nut on the shift linkage. (As the JD video shows I guess on a Yamaha you put it in reverse to accomplish this.) Step 3: Once the M10 lower lock nut is exposed, turn it clockwise a 1/4 of a turn. Once you have this loose you can remove M10 coupler (aka hex collar nut). The coupler is removed by turning it counterclockwise a few turns until the lower shaft separates from the coupler. The M10 lock nut will stay on the lower shift shaft on the lower unit. The M10 coupler will stay attached to the upper shift shaft. And this film is not so good as the the first Shaft but Mascolo really heightened this film with his marvelous portrayal of gangster boss Gus Mascolo. Old Pathetic Video! Someday I'll remake an arrow making series.... THIS IS THE SAME AS PT 17 OF THE TRAIL CAMERA ADVENTURES. I just wanted it under my primitive skills playlist and I had to re-upload it. While checking the trail camera, I collected 4 ocean spray/arrow wood shafts on the way in. Checked the camera on the knob below the cave first. Got LOTS of pictures of squirrels, birds, chipmunks, and a nice closeup of a bobcat. Beautiful! Up at the cave I got one pic which ended up being the cougar. He's still hanging around even with the warmer weather and still showing up around daylight. Hmmm, I think Im finally finding a pattern. I started on some arrow shafts for hunting using only stone and bone tools I collected and made. The shafts were collected simply by pulling them off. I cut them extra long with my basalt saw. I cut them long because they almost always split a little at the very ends whild drying. I then scraped them down with the jasper scraper then sized them by continuing to scrape and checking the diameter with the bone sizing tool. Once sized, I run them over the heat of the fire to sear the outside so they wont split while drying which ocean spray is notorious for. It must sear the outside or something like that. Im not sure what it does but it does work very well to prevent splitting and checking. They are then bundled up and tied so they will dry strait. I use a length of stinging nettle cordage I made. I'll take them out and straiten them every <b>...</b>

This is what I went through in rebuilding the axle shafts on my 89 Toyota Pickup's axle shafts. It's a 7.5 inch axle. I had to replace the differential carrier (which I don't cover rebuilding) and decided to do the bearings while I was there, since they had 295K not-so-friendly miles on them. The key to all this was borrowing my Dad's press, wouldn't have been able to do this without it because of the fits. Simple heat and hammering wasn't budging anything.
