Vangelis - Himalaya

This is a track from Vangelis's 1979 album, "China," a concept album about said nation. (Interestingly, Vangelis had never visited China at the time that he wrote the album. Nevertheless, he employs various traditional Chinese instruments and compositional styles alongside his own trademark sound for the piees on the album, including this one.) The video consists of various images that I found on both Google and Wikimedia Commons of the titular mountain range, including its tallest and most famous peak, Everest Mons (which, by the way, is actually located in Nepal and not in China.)

Vangelis - Spiral

This is the title track from Vangelis's 1977 album, "Spiral." This particular piece is notable for featuring an unusual sound effect that creates a spiralling sensation around the listener. It is also notable for being the artist's first piece created using a Yamaha CS80 synthesizer, which he used on his best work - from 1977 to 1988. The video itself consists of various images of galaxies, in particular the titular spiral variety.

Vangelis - Message

This is a track from Vangelis's 1988 album, "Direct" - and one of my personal favorites from the artist. The video consists of several images of extrasolar planets. Most of them are taken from Wikimedia Commons, except for the image of COROT-7b, which I found on Google. At least two of the extrasolar planets in the images are fictional. Oh yeah, just for the record, the planet that appears at 5:31 is supposed to be Z'Ha'Dum, from "Babylon 5." (That is, Z'Ha'Dum prior to its destruction as a result of that supernova.)

Vangelis - The Bounty (End Theme)

This is the end credits theme from "The Bounty" composed, arranged, and performed by Vangelis. In contrast to the atmospheric opening theme, the end theme is very melodic and somewhat melancholy but very beautiful. Although the official version of the piece is not as good as the version in the film, lacking some of the percussion effects, it is still a very nice composition to listen to. The video itself consists of some random space art that I found on Google, concluding with a nostalgic look back to the early days of exploration and a hidden surprise at the end.

Jean-Michel Jarre - Équinoxe, Part 4

This is part 4 from JMJ's 1978 electronic music epic, "Équinoxe." This particular piece is probably the most popular one from the album, and it's certainly my favourite from the album. The video itself consists yet again of space art taken from fanpop.com. (Part of the problem is that there is so much quality space art worth using on the site. And since I have a tendency to group objects in pairs, I hope to use this art on one more video.) I would like to give apologies (and thanks) to T0y0Tac0roll4, for providing me with the music.

Vangelis - Tales of the Future

This is a track from the "Blade Runner" soundtrack, by Vangelis and featuring lyrics performed by Artemios "Demis" Roussos. The video consists of some photos of the world's tallest structure, the Burj Khalifa, from construction to completion, plus a hidden bonus at the end. The choice of images is a reference to the language in which the lyrics are performed (Arabic, albeit with an Egyptian accent), as well as the building's futuristic appearance. Indeed, one of the night shots sure does have a rather "Blade Runner"-esque feel to it!

This track is something of a mystery, because I know that it's by a group called Ambient Generation, and that it comes from an album entitled "Icebreaker", but other than that, I know nothing about it. I decided to upload it because I like it, and I thought that others might possibly enjoy it too. The video itself consists of various images of fractals, intended to give it an almost psychedelic feel. The track itself reminds me somewhat of some of Jean-Michel Jarre's stuff, especially "Chronologie, part 4."

Vangelis - Sauvage et Beau (Opening Theme)

This is the opening theme from the 1984 wildlife documentary, "Sauvage et Beau", composed and performed by Vangelis. Vangelis produced several fruitful collaborations with French documentary filmmaker FrĂ©dĂ©ric Rossif, composing and performing the soundtracks to six of Rossif's films, including "Sauvage et Beau." (The other five are "L'Apocalypse des Animaux", "La FĂȘte Sauvage", "OpĂ©ra Sauvage", "Cousteau", and "Picasso.") The video itself consists of some photos taken of the different planets in the Solar System and their surfaces (that is, on the planets that have surfaces) combined with some footage from an educational video created by the Maryland Department of Education. Oh, in case you're wondering, I still count Pluto as a planet (but not Eris, despite it being larger than Pluto.) Also, the photo of Mars is the same one that appeared in my video featuring the opening theme from "Missing."

Vangelis - Mare Tranquillitatis

This is "Mare Tranquillitatis", a track from Vangelis's 1975 album, "Albedo 0.39." This one starts where the previous track, "Freefall," left off and features recordings of dialouge taken during several Apollo missions. The video itself consists of video footage taken from Apollo 11 and 16, specifically of the LEM undocking from the CSM, a moon-buggy ride, astronaut Charles Duke exploring the lunar surface, and the liftoff of the LEM from the lunar surface. The footage is inter-spliced with the mission patches for the two missions. (By the way, I do not believe that the Apollo missions were a hoax in any way. There would've been nothing to gain from faking a lunar landing and everything to gain from actually going to the moon.)

Now that I have my own account, I am able to post my videos as my own, rather than using my brother's account (werta5000, more specifically.) This is a track from Vangelis's 1975 album, "Albedo 0.39" which has rarely been uploaded onto YouTube - only one other person has done so. The video consists of seven photos of the sun (an example of the titular star) on various wavelengths and with various imaging equipment. It also includes, as a funny little science fiction reference, a screenshot from the British film, "Sunshine." Please note that during production of this video, I apparently got some of the wavelengths or imaging equipment mixed up. As a result, I have included a few annonations to correct these errors.

This is my list of the top 10 greatest synthesizer artists, groups, and composers, revised and re-uploaded. The original video took a lot of heat for its inclusion of one particular artist, so I decided to redo the video and replace her with a more acclaimed musician, because I was concerned that I might come off looking stupid otherwise. Unfortunately, this makes the whole affair even more of a sausage-fest than the previous uploading. There are also countless other artists who are worth listening to, but since I wasted half my time on the original video trying to list them, I won't bother this time.

Self-Made Trailer for Costa-Gavras's "Missing"

I noticed that no one on YouTube has uploaded the trailer for Costa-Gavras's 1982 political thriller, "Missing", so I decided to create one myself. For those of you who are wondering, the film first came to my attention when I learned that its soundtrack had been composed and performed by my favorite composer, Vangelis. I have already uploaded the film's theme music onto YouTube, and it has actually turned out to be my most viewed video of my time on this site. Plus, I am a bit of a film buff anyway, so I think I know how the people at the studio might try to promote it. And speaking of Vangelis, the music in the trailer is actually from Sir Ridley Scott's "Blade Runner" - a soundtrack which the composer produced at about the same time and with slight similarities to the soundtrack to this film. Finally, I would like to give apologies (and thanks) to trauld, for the clips, and a very special thanks to Costa-Gavras, for this powerful and moving film.

Tangerine Dream - Burning Bar

This is an energetic track by the German electronic music ensemble Tangerine Dream (consisting at the time of Edgar Froese, Christoph(er) Franke, and Johannes Schmoelling), from the soundtrack to the 1981 film "Thief", directed by Michael Mann (in his directorial debut). The film stars James Caan as Frank, a recently-released but still active jewel thief whose life is turned upside-down when his mentor betrays him, and Tuesday Weld as Jessie, Frank's love interest. The video itself consists of some images found on Google of supernovae and supernova remnants. The final image is a poster for the film from which the piece is taken. Hopefully, the music will give you an idea of just what happens when stars undergo this sort of collapse! Jean-Michel Jarre - Magnetic Fields, Part 2

This is part two from JMJ's 1981 electronic music epic, "Magnetic Fields." The album is notable for being the artist's first attempt at using digital (rather than analog) synthesizers, in particular his trademark Fairlight CMI. The original title of the album is "Les Chants Magnetiques" ("Magnetic Songs") - a pun on the homonymous French word for magnetic fields, which is "champs magnetiques." Since the pun would be lost to English-speakers, the international version of the album is given a different title that can be easily understood by those not fluent in French. The video itself consists of images and videos (mostly taken by an educational video produced by the Maryland Department of Education) depicting the various instruments used by astronomers to gather data on the universe in which we inhabit. These range from optical and radio telescopes to observational satellites such as the Hubble Space Telescope and the Chandra X-Ray Observatory. (And just for the sake of variation, I have used a different image of the HST from the one I used in the video featuring Vangelis's theme music from "Missing.") The ultimate theme of the video, however, is the search for extraterrestrial life, as the last images are intended to suggest a message being recieved from space (which resembles mechanical noises.) I would also like to give apologies (and thanks) to T0y0Tac0roll4, for providing me with the music.

Jean-Michel Jarre - Chronologie, Part 2

This is the energetic part 2 from JMJ's "Chronologie." Although part 4 is my favourite (and not just from the album, but from the artist as well) part 2 is also worth listening to. Like my video featuring Vangelis's "Main Sequence", this video also has a solar theme. This time, though, it focuses specifically on the various activity that occurs on the star's surface, including massive prominences and violent flares. Although they may look calm and peaceful in the videos, trust me, they are anything but calm and peaceful! Hopefully the music will give you an idea of just what happens when these events occur. And yes, I know one of the prominences actually appears twice in the video (once in colour and once in B/W), but I hope you'll forgive me for that. Now that I have my own account, I am able to post my videos as my own, rather than using my brother's account (werta5000, more specifically.) This is my tribute to this excellent science fiction series. As my username implies, I am a great fan of the sci-fi genre. In fact, I am working on a science fiction novel, entitled "The Plutonian Chronicles." I hope that you enjoy it when it gets published. I chose "Dial Out" by Vangelis (from his 1989 album, "Direct") because some of the sounds in the song remind me of ones that Christoph(er) Franke incorporated into the show's soundtrack. Jean-Michel Jarre - Chronologie, Part 4

This is part four from JMJ's 1993 electronic music epic, "Chronologie," and my personal favorite from the artist. According to Wikipedia, the album itself was inspired by Stephen Hawking's "A Brief History of Time," while the sound was based on electronic dance music that was becoming popular at the time, although the tracks on the album cover many different styles. The video itself consists of video footage, mostly by NASA but also by the Maryland Department of Education, depicting planetary motion, specifically rotation and revolution (but especially the former.) Some of the footage, specifically of Jupiter, the "spokes" in Saturn's ring B, and the Venusian cloud cover, are time-lapsed, which might be fitting given the song's title. I chose the footage because of the fact that when I listen to this piece, I tend to visualize motion, especially circular motion. This one's made especially for you, freddy279. A long-awaited collection of screenshots taken on Orbiter Space Flight Simulator, based on a novel of the same name that I am writing. In turn, the novel is based on the add-ons that I used to create the screenshots. (And yes, I did credit the original authors for inspiration in the novel's acknowledgements section.) Each screenshot is shown in chronological order, from the earliest events in the novel's timeline, to the very latest. All are set to my favorite song of all time - "Alpha" by the great Greek synthesizer artist Vangelis. Please note that some of the screenshots are not exactly of the best quality, being shot from awkward angles or in poor lighting. This is largely a consequence of rushed production. Also, some of the screenshots depict modifications that I personally made to the add-ons on my computer that will not be available to others. Finally, I apologize for the screw-up in the end credits.

A Pictorial Tribute to Monica Bellucci

Now that I have my own account, I am able to post my videos as my own, rather than using my brother's account (werta5000, more specifically.) This video is exactly what the title says - a tribute to one of my favourite actresses - the talented, beautiful, and sadly underrated Monica Bellucci. I admit, in hindsight, that the choice of music was highly inappropriate, because it makes it seem more like a memorial than a tribute. At the time that I made the video, I felt that Bellucci did not get any respect in terms of casting, and the video was intended to lament this fact. Now, however, I believe that, with some unfortunate exceptions (most notably a certain misogynistic rape fantasy masquerading as an anti-rape film - although her performance was, to quote Roger Ebert, "courageous and convincing"), most directors do appreciate her ability as an actress. Despite what I said earlier, while the video was posted under my brother's account, "Malena" is not banned in Canada. Nor is Bellucci a replicant, although she is, admittedly, "More human than human."

Vangelis - Five Circles

This is a piece by Vangelis, originally written for the Academy Award-winning 1981 British film "Chariots of Fire." The film is based on the story of two British runners, the devout Christian Eric Liddell (pronounced "liddle") and the Jewish Harold Abrahams, who participated in the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris (hence the title of this piece.) The film documents the two athletes' motivations for participating, as well as the various obstacles that they must overcome (in particular, in the case of Abrahams, anti-Semitism.) The film stars Ian Charleson and Ben Cross as Liddell and Abrahams, respectively. Vangelis's soundtrack to the film is unusual for the time in that, although "Chariots of Fire" is a historical film, it features a very modern-sounding synethsizer-based sound, although some period music is used in the film. An interesting fact is that the soundtrack was actually recorded twice - once for the film and once for the album. As a result, the album versions of the pieces in the film are slightly different from their film versions. In the end, though, the effort paid off, as the film won four Academy Awards, specifically for Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay, Best Score, and Best Costume Design. Because Vangelis has a reputation as something of a hermit, he was unable to attend the ceremony, so the award was accepted on his behalf. The video itself consists yet again of space art (and I promise that this will be the last time that I use it.)

Vangelis - Dr. Tyrell's Death (Halifax, 12/06/1917)

This is a track from the "Blade Runner" soundtrack, written, arranged and performed by Vangelis. I got the idea from freddy279's video about the Seveso disaster. Plus, I always wanted to upload this piece, as it is not only one of the most prominent pieces in the film but also because of its forceful, dramatic sound. For my video, I decided to make it about a disaster that happened in my country - the Halifax explosion of 1917. Of course, the music was not inspired by the disaster in question, I just thought that it would fit well with the events depicted. Also, it is NOT, repeat NOT, my intention to glorify the disaster in this video. If anything, it's intended as a memorial to those who died. Please note that not all of the photos are actually taken from the disaster (specifically the images of the burning ship, the exploding ship, the collision, the fiery mushroom cloud, and the shockwave) but are intended to give you an idea of just what happened. (For those who don't know much about Canadian history, the Halifax explosion occurred when a munitions ship, the Mont-Blanc, scratched the surface of a relief vessel, the Imo, causing sparks which ignited its cargo. The resulting explosion flattened the city, killing more than 1900 people and injuring at least 9000.)

Vangelis - The Bounty (Opening Theme)

This is the opening theme from the 1984 film, "The Bounty", directed by Roger Donaldson. The film is based on one of most notorious scandals in the history of the British Royal Navy - the seizure of the HMS Bounty by a group of rebellious crew members in 1789. The crew members had apparently become a bit too friendly with the natives of the island of Tahiti, and refused to leave. The film stars Sir Anthony Hopkins as Lieutenant William Bligh, the Bounty's commander, and Mel Gibson as Fletcher Christian, Bligh's best friend turned lead mutineer. "The Bounty" breaks with some of the conventions established by previous takes on the incident. Traditionally, Bligh was portrayed as a cruel, sadistic tyrant, and Christian as a brave freedom fighter. However, this film offers a more sympathetic (and realistic) view of Bligh as a verbally abusive but otherwise quite progressive ship's commander simply trying to do his job. At the same time, Christian is given a less sympathetic (and, again, more realistic) portrayal as an opportunistic social climber. In other words, while Bligh was traditionally the villian and Christian the hero, "The Bounty" essentially reverses these roles or at least blurs the distinction. The greatest break with tradition, however, is the film's haunting, synthesizer-based "space music" soundtrack composed and performed by Vangelis. Despite much demand, however, the soundtrack has never been released on CD, although the opening and ending theme were included ...

Jean-Michel Jarre - OxygĂšne, Part 4 (Enemy Mine Music Video)

This is a part four of Jean-Michel Jarre's 1977 electronic music epic, "OxygĂšne." Part four is probably the composer's best known composition, and the closest that he ever had to an international success. The video itself is an homage to one of my favorite science fiction films, Wolfgang Petersen's underrated classic "Enemy Mine", an intelligent and moving sci-fi reworking of John Boorman's 1968 film "Hell in the Pacific." Dennis Quaid stars as Willis Davidge, a human pilot who crash-lands on an Earth-like planet called Fyrine IV, and Louis Gosset, Jr. (under heavy makeup) as Jeriba Shigan, a reptile-like alien called a Drac who also crashes on Fyrine IV. The two are forced to work together to survive despite being from two warring nations, and over the course of the film manage to overcome their prejudices. Their co-operation is put to the ultimate test when Jeriba become pregnant. (To avoid confusion, Dracs are apparently asexual, reproducing through parthenogenesis.) The choice of the song is a reference to the fact that the film's soundtrack was composed by JMJ's father, the late, great Maurice Jarre. I apologize for the green bar that appears at the bottom of the screen in some of the clips. I actually don't know how it even got there in the first place. This is another track from the soundtrack to Michael Mann's "Thief", written, arranged, and performed by the members of Tangerine Dream. This particular track is a shortened and re-mixed version of another composition by the group, entitled "Through Metamorphic Rocks," originally from the album "Force Majeure." (The original version is used in the trailer for "Thief.") The distorted bassline is the result of studio equipment being fried during the recording of the original track. When the group's members first heard the results, however, they liked it so much that they decided to let it remain. The video consists of various images of volcanoes (including a few on Venus and Io) which I found on Google. Top 10 Sci-Fi Programs

These are the top ten science fiction television series, as per my opinion. Please note that I had to audioswap the song, since the original music was blocked by the Warner Music Gestapo. I would also like to give special mention to the following programs, which are also highly enjoyable but are not included on the list by virtue of lack of space (no pun intended): "Andromeda" "Earth: The Final Conflict" "Red Dwarf" "Space: 1999" (or at least the first half of the series) "UFO" "Buck Rogers in the 25th Century" "War of the Worlds: The Series" "Alien Nation" "Charlie Jade" "Max Headroom" "The Starlost" (Maybe it's just Canadian pride, but I quite like the concept, and I think it should be given a second, hopefully more successful, chance at life just like BSG.) "Sliders" "The Six Million Dollar Man" "SeaQuest DSV" "Earth-2" "The X-Files" "The Prisoner" "The Hitchiker's Guide: The Series" "Heroes" "The Sarah Connor Chronicles" "V" "Smallville" "Warehouse 13" "The 4400" "Roswell" "ReGenesis" (The list is, simply put, inexhaustive.) And no, I will not tolerate fanboyish comments like, "In the formal opinions of the universe, X rules over Y," or anything like that. Such comments will be immediately deleted. Indeed, I am pretty sure that this is how some American distributors might have attempted to market the film, given that the Cold War was still occurring at the time. Make no mistake, though - it is not my intention to mock Tarkovsky at all. Rather, the mockery is directed at the American distributors' attempts to discredit the Russian director by misrepresenting his film, all for some cheap patriotism. The music is "Meditation" by Eduard Artemyev, the same composer who wrote the soundtrack for "Solyaris." Artemyev originally wrote this haunting tune for another Tarkovsky film, namely "Stalker." I would like to give apologies (and thanks) to the various people who provided the footage, and to blackjack990 for the music, and a very special thanks to Mr. Tarkovsky for his thought-provoking and utterly otherworldly film.

Tangerine Dream - The Night in Romania

This is another track from the soundtrack to Michael Mann's "The Keep", composed, arranged, and performed by the members of Tangerine Dream. This track is one of the four pieces included on the album that are actually used in the film itself (the other three being "Puer Natus Est Nobis", "Heritage Survival", and "Canzone.") The video itself consists of some photos taken of the "Cave of the Crystals" in Naica, Mexico, plus a poster for the film and the cover of the novel. In case you're wondering why the images move by so quickly despite this being a rather slow piece, it's because I grossly overestimated how much material I could fit into the time span but did not want to waste any of this material. I know that might possibly kill the ambience, but I hope you'll forgive me.

Vangelis - Life of Antarctica

This is the opening theme from the 1983 Japanese film, "Nankyoku Monogatari" ("South Pole Story", but better known by the title of "Antarctica"), composed and performed by Vangelis. The film, directed by Koreyoshi Kurahara, is based on a series of events that occurred during a Japanese Antarctic expedition in 1958. The expedition had been abandoned due to poor weather, but in the process left behind the entire team of sled dogs. It was hoped that a later expedition would retrieve them, but this never happened. About one year later, the expedition members, fearing the worst, were surprised to discover that two of the canines, Taro and Jiro, had amazingly survived. (Sadly, the other thirteen dogs did not did not.) How Taro and Jiro managed to survive is a mystery, but they were regarded as heroes in the years that followed. The film stars Ken Takakura as scientist Akira Ushioda, and Tsunehiko Watase as fellow scientist Kenjiro Ochi. "Nankyoku Monogatari" was Japan's highest-grossing local film of that particular year, earning about „5900000000. However, some concerns were raised regarding the treatment of the film's canine performers due to the realism of some scenes, and the director had to publicly explain that no animals had been harmed in the production of the film, and that any scenes in which they appeared to be were achieved through the use of special effects. In keeping with the film's Antarctic setting, the video itself consists of some photos of Antarctic scenery ...

Tangerine Dream - Dirty Cross Roads

This is a track by composers Edgar Froese, Christoph(er) Franke, and Johannes Schmoelling (AKA Tangerine Dream), from the soundtrack to the 1984 film "Flashpoint," directed by William Tannen. I do not know much about this film, but I do know that it was the first theatrical release from the television network HBO. Therefore, I believe it was probably originally broadcast as a television film before being released theatrically. The film stars Kris Kristofferson and Treat Williams as two Texas Border Patrol agents who discover a buried vehicle in the Mojave desert, along with the driver's skeletal remains, a gun, and lots of cash. However, the duo are later plunged into a wild goose chase as they flee from Federal agents who are determined to kill anyone with information relating to the find... (Unfortunately for viewers who rented the film on VHS, the final plot twist was spoiled, so I won't mention it here.) In keeping with the film's desert setting, the video itself consists of some images of desert scenery. Indeed, the music is certainly quite evocative of a desert environment (which was clearly the intention anyway.) I wish to give apologies (and thanks) to oilingup, for providing me with the music.

HAL 9000 Reads Selections from "The Plutonian Chronicles" (Part 1)

In this video, Arthur C. Clarke's paranoid computer (and my YouTube alter ego) reads a few selection from the prologue and first three chapters of my novel, "The Plutonian Chronicles." In most of the selections, I have featured an accompanying image that matches the action (and all taken from my previous videos.) However, if there was no image available, I simply substituted it with an image of HAL. HAL's voice was created using a program called Speakonia. Please note that the voice used is in no way a precise duplication of his voice, but is rather a close approximation. (Indeed, "2001" was indeed a major influence on "TPC", especially in its depiction of the Solar System.) Please note that I have since made several edits to the novel, so the passages in the completed version may be somewhat different than HAL's narration. I anticipate that my novel will likely be controversial, and will quite likely even be banned in the USA, due to its depiction of that country's government, as well as its depiction of the Walt Disney Corporation (the latter organization being especially notorious for violently lashing out against critics, as depicted in "TPC.")

Jean-Michel Jarre - Third Rendez-vous (Dedicated to antiquelens)

This is part three from JMJ's 1986 album, "Rendez-vous." This particular composition is notable for featuring, among other things, a performance on a laser harp. The album also features a beautiful composition entitled "Ron's Piece", which is dedicated to astronaut and fellow musician Ron McNair, who was one of the seven astronauts killed in the Challenger accident. The video itself consists of some random space art that I found on Google, similar to the ones that I used in my video featuring Vangelis's end theme from "The Bounty." Much in the same way that Jarre dedicated "Ron's Piece" to Ron McNair, I have dedicated this video to Ashley T., AKA antiquelens, a YouTube user and fellow Canadian whom I admired very much for her intelligence and courage in standing up to an industry that most other users vigorously defend despite the fact that it harms both its participants and its consumers. (And no, I will not name the industry, as doing so would only attract trolls.) I therefore saw her as the voice of reason in an often-irrational world. Unfortunately, her stance often made her a target of scorn and ridicule. In a violent act of censorship, antiquelens's channel was terminated by some sexist douchebag. Although she later established a new channel, as owleyes777, it only lasted two months before she was forced to close her account due to doc-dropping by her opponents. It has recently come to my attention that her resignation (or whatever you want to call it) was largely ...

Jean-Michel Jarre - Calypso, Part 2

This is part two of the three-part track "Calypso" from JMJ's 1990 album, "En Attendant Cousteau" ("Waiting for Cousteau.") As the title implies, the album is intended as at tribute to the great oceanographer Jacques-Yves Cousteau, and is considered one of Jarre's most unique ventures. The title of this particular piece refers to Cousteau's ship, the RV Calypso, on which much of his research was performed. The video itself consists of some photos of the various life-forms that inhabit the ocean. Most of them are fish, but there are also occasional echinoderms (ie sea stars), cnidarians (ie jellyfish, corals, and anemones), crustaceans (ie shrimp), reptiles (ie sea turtles), and even mammals (ie whales). Each life-form is shown twice, as per my habit of featuring these elements in pairs, with the exception of the Dascyllus melanurus and the similar Dascyllus aruanus, which are only shown once due to an error in production. The species depicted in this video are a fairly obvious reference to one of my favorite animated films, namely Andrew Stanton's "Finding Nemo." Of course, I could not include every single species from the film due to time constraints, so I only went with those that are easy to photograph. Although it's the wrong species (Balaenoptera musculus rather than Physeter macrocephalus), the whale may also be a reference to a more obscure but equally brilliant (albeit very dark) piece of animation - Jannik Hastrup's "Samson og Sally." Indeed, the part of the song ...

Vangelis - Missing (Opening Theme)

This is the theme music from the 1982 film, "Missing", directed by Konstantinos Gavras (AKA Constantin Costa-Gavras.) The film is based on a scandal that took place in Chile in 1973. Specifically, it is based on the disappearance of journalist Charles Horman. (Just for the record, the country is never referred to by name in the film, but its capital city, Santiago, is mentioned.) Horman had attempted to expose a conspiracy between the American and Chilean governments to overthrow Chilean president Salvador Allende. Unfortunately, he was later kidnapped by forces loyal to the conspirators, triggering a manhunt. It was later discovered that Horman had been executed when his body was discovered in a morgue. Jack Lemmon stars as Horman's father, Ed, and Sissy Spacek as Horman's wife, Beth. One of Costa-Gavras's most effective techniques in the film is the manner in which it is established to be based on a true story in the opening scene, although the ending scene states that the American government denies the existence of the events. Much like Michael Moore's "Fahrenheit 9/11", the film caused controversy for its portrayal of American interference in other countries' affairs, and was at one point banned in Chile because of its depiction of the Pinochet regime. (Speaking of Michael Moore, the overthrow of Allende and his replacement with Pinochet was mentioned in the "What a Wonderful World" montage in "Bowling for Columbine.") Nevertheless, Costa-Gavras was awarded the Palme ...
