Our web cast on machining spacer discs for land-based gas turbines illustrates six unique tooling solutions to make the most out this hard to machine component. Video Transcription: Hello, and welcome to our webinar about machining processes for a spacer discs for land-based gas turbines. Gas turbines usually feature a set of discs, with spacers that create space between each pair of discs that carry the blades. Spacer discs are generally made of Inconel 706 or alloyed steel, depending on where they're located in the turbine. The blank typically weighs about 6600 lbs, but after machining, the weight goes down to about 3900 lbs. This slide shows some of the typical features, operations and solutions for spacer-disc machining. Most spacer-disc machining can be performed on a vertical turning lathe. We've developed some unique tooling solutions, which you see here, to make some of the most difficult aspects of machining the turbine a lot easier. Now we'll review the steps of operation for machining spacer discs. The first step of operation is rough turning of the outer diameter and the face. For this, we recommend a square insert because the 45-degree angle helps to thin out the chips and spread out wear on the cutting edge. This can greatly increase tool life by reducing the hammering effect from the chips. The tool also has our HP technology, which directs coolant through the nozzle and straight to the cutting zone. Sandvik Coromant is strengthening and broadening its grade profile for stainless steel milling with the introduction of grade 1040. 1040 can be used in a variety of industry segments, including aerospace, energy, chemical and oil and gas. 1040 should be your first choice grade for austenitic stainless steels such as 304 and 316; duplex stainless, which are more demanding then austenitics due to their higher chromium content; and PH stainless steels such as 17-4 and 15-5. Shoulder milling with small diameter cutters, and tough or slow-speed applications also call for 1040 for optimal performance. 1040's tough micro-grain cemented carbide substrate and thin PVD coating helps resist thermal cracking and chipping. It is a broad grade that works well in dry or wet machining and from roughing to finishing. Along with the grade, insert geometry can enhance or detract from insert performance and tool life. When machining stainless, there is always a benefit to using positive geometries, as opposed to negative. Catering the insert geometry to your application can make for optimal cutting conditions. Welcome to the Thread Turning CAM tip from our CAM Programming Tip Series. Thread Turning is an established and widely used threading technique for the threading of parts. We hope you find this video tip helpful to your thread turning processes for application in a variety of industries. VIDEO TRANSCRIPT: Thread Turning is an established and widely used threading technique for the threading of parts. It is commonly the 'first choice' technique for threading rotational parts because of it's high productivity and surface finish compared to other techniques shown here. (zoom in on thread turning pic in slide) With thread turning there are 3 primary programming infeed methods: Modified Flank Infeed, Incremental Infeed (also known as Alternating Flank Infeed or Zig-Zag Infeed), and Radial Infeed. With Modified Flank Infeed the insert is fed in at the angle relative to the thread profile. This angle is usually 1 to 5 degrees 3-5degrees for 'A' and 'F' insert Geometries and 1degree for chip breaker 'C' geometries. The advantage of this method is less heat generated, less vibration, and higher production reliability. This method should be a 'first choice' for most threading operations. With Incremental infeed the insert is fed in at the angle of the thread profile, but here each leading flank pass is alternated with a trailing flank pass. Welcome to the Thread Milling CAM tip from our CAM Programming Tip Series. Thread Milling is a great alternative for threading holes and bosses. This technique is highly productive and produces higher quality threads than other options, such as turning or tapping tools. VIDEO TRANSCRIPT: Thread Milling is an ideal option for the threading of both holes and bosses. Instead of using a turning tool or tapping tool to produce a thread, a milling tool is used to helical interpolate a thread to a specified depth and pitch. Depending on the application, this threading technique can yield better quality threads and higher productivity than its alternatives. While not as widely used as thread turning, it has the primary advantage of being able to thread non-rotational parts, plus large components that are difficult to machine on a lathe. Thread milling uses lower cutting forces making it ideal for machining long overhangs or thin walled components. Thread milling can also be applied closer to the shoulder in blind holes making a relief groove not needed unlike that in thread turning. Thread milling has many advantages over tapping as well. A range of thread diameter sizes and pitches can be used by the same tool. Plus left- and right-hand threads can be accommodated with the same insert, unlike a tapping tool. Between Jan 25 and Feb 05, 2010, Sandvik's rock cutting competence center at Zeltweg, Austria presented what is probably the worlds largest and most powerful mobile underground mining machine to potential customers from Canada, USA, Poland, Russia, Germany and the UK. The Borer Miner MF420 weighs in at 250 tonnes. The total installed power is 1550 KW (2000 HP) This machine is the first of a total of seven units to be supplied to the Canadian potash producer PotashCorp between April2010 and April 2011. During the prototype tests, the machine had cut a 10m long tunnel through a specially erected concrete block of 10 x 10 x 10 metres size. After the cutting test, the machine was facing a new challenge: For the first time ever, cutting was to be filmed from the rocks perspective. To make this possible, a large ice block was built on the entrance of the test tunnel. the austrian-based company ICEANDART was contracted to design and build this ice wall.

Moving the concept of exchangeable-head end mills into a new generation of tooling CoroMill 316 is the first product to be introduced in the new exchangeable head milling system. Versatile in the widest sense of the word, it can be applied in a multitude of milling operations covering diverse application areas. In combination with new insert generation grade GC1030, the CoroMill 316 is a high performance cutting tool ready to be used in all material groups from ISO P to ISO S. The coupling is based on a new, patented self-centering thread. This keeps the removable head tight against the axial support face and against the tapered radial support. The coupling is unique in strength and handling and provides the stiffness required for full-slot roughing and high accuracy for precision finishing operations.
