Japan's Sony, which trades in ADRs under SNE in the US, has filed a patent-infringement complaint against LG Electronics Inc., seeking to block the South Korean electronics maker from shipping mobile phones to the US, the US International Trade Commission said, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal and other news outlets. In a statement dated Tuesday, the US trade watchdog said Sony's complaint alleged that LG violated US trade rules by importing and selling certain mobile phones and modems that infringed on Sony's patents. Sony's complaint comes only a few weeks after LG received another lawsuit, filed by Taiwanese research company Industrial Technology Research Institute, for alleged infringement on 22 patents involving consumer electronics products, such as mobile phones and liquid crystal display, the WSJ said. LG's handset business has already been under heavy pressure this year due to its relatively slower response to the fast-growing popularity of smartphones. LG has lagged global peers, such as Apple Inc. and Samsung Electronics in introducing smartphone models, and its handset division reported a 32% decline in third-quarter sales, its worst-ever quarterly loss, the WSJ reported.
