It seems like a lot of people are either better at drawing women and have trouble with men, or vice-versa. Usually females have an easier time drawing females and males have an easier time drawing males. So I wanted to do a side-by-side comparison of some of the differences when drawing males compared to females. I know that the presentation is a bit weird and awkward, but it's the best way I could think of to show the differences. I included a colouring portion to show some of the concerns that need to be taken into account when colouring also. I had no idea what to call this, hence the crappy title. Hope it helps some people. A commissioned portrait of Jake the Gordon Setter, painted in pastel pencils on sanded paper (Fisher 400). I wish I could really work this fast, but in reality it took about 20 hours. The painting measures about 18x16". To answer the FAQs that I usually get: I don't use water or any fluids. The background is in soft pastel sticks, the 'brush' looking thing I use on it at the start is a silicon 'colour shaper' tool: it blends the colours. The dog is done entirely with pastel pencils. Mostly I use Faber Castell & Schwann CarbOthello. I used to use Derwent, but have had quality issues so I've stopped using them and cannot recommend them. The stick you can see some of the time is a Mahl stick, as used by signwriters. It's just to lean my hand on without smudging the work. I do sell my work and take portrait commissions in the UK (it's my living, so please don't ask for freebies!), more about that on my website for anyone interested. I don't do any teaching or tuition, I just make these videos from time to time because people seem to enjoy watching the process. Hope you do too... happy viewing!

It's very important for this edge to be dry in the face so that it will pop better. Let's reload with darker colors for the straps that hang down and that will be good for showing off the blond hair. Try not to go back and fix things too much. Certain things happen along the way and you just want to let it happen. Let's get a touch of her hair connecting. For blonde hair you don't necessarily want to put yellow in so you have to be careful. While I'm over here let's pull some of the shadow shape and the side of her shoulder in there and also to pick up some of the flesh tones. I'm trying to get as much done in that first wash as I can. Let it fade to white. I want to get the rest of that ribbon in. I don't want to fool around too much, I want to pull it together and not be too distracting. Let your <b>...</b>
