The Art of Michelangelo - PietĂ

Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni[1] (March 6, 1475 February 18, 1564), commonly known as Michelangelo, was an Italian Renaissance painter, sculptor, architect, poet, and engineer. Despite making few forays beyond the arts, his versatility in the disciplines he took up was of such a high order that he is often considered a contender for the title of the archetypal Renaissance man, along with his rival and fellow Italian Leonardo da Vinci. Michelangelo's output in every field during his long life was prodigious; when the sheer volume of correspondence, sketches, and reminiscences that survive is also taken into account, he is the best-documented artist of the 16th century. Two of his best-known works, the PietĂ and David, were sculpted before he turned thirty. Despite his low opinion of painting, Michelangelo also created two of the most influential works in fresco in the history of Western art: the scenes from Genesis on the ceiling and The Last Judgment on the altar wall of the Sistine Chapel in Rome. As an architect, Michelangelo pioneered the Mannerist style at the Laurentian Library. At 74 he succeeded Antonio da Sangallo the Younger as the architect of Saint Peter's Basilica. Michelangelo transformed the plan, the western end being finished to Michelangelo's design, the dome being completed after his death with some modification. In a demonstration of Michelangelo's unique standing, he was the first Western artist whose biography was published while he was ...

AngÚle Dubeau & La Pietà - Les Beautés Du Diable

AngÚle Dubeau & La Pietà's music video for "Les Beautés du diable" from their 2003 album Infernal Violins. Available on the bonus DVD that comes with the reissue of the album. As of Oct 2007, they have released a brand new album which also features this song... see details below. Angele is co-founder and first violinist in this all-female ensemble. I have been fortunate enough to see them live twice. They play with an intensity, precision and passion that I have rarely seen nor heard elsewhere. Their arrangements (mostly done by pianist/arranger Louise-Andre Baril) are also of particular interest for many of the more popular pieces they perform. This particular piece, composed by François Dompierre, was written for La Pietà. Although critically praised, I believe they may be the most under-appreciated gem in today's classical music industry. And having met Angele and some of the current performers, they are very gracious and kind as well! More information about Angele here: en.wikipedia.org Please visit the official page at: www.angeledubeau.com To hear clips from and/or to order their new album, Un Conte de Fées / Fairy Tale, go here: www.archambault.ca You can purchase their other albums here: www.archambault.ca Audio is overdubbed from CD source. Pieta (by Joseph M. Martin) accompaniment video

I love Joseph Martin's choral pieces. I had posted a real quick draft accompaniment last year when I directed this piece at church and needed another set of hands to "play" the piano, thus the accompaniment track, but I had gone back afterward and reworked the video after getting better at using MovieMaker. For some reason, I never got around to uploading this better video until now. I hope you like this smoother-moving version. This is a beautiful choral piece and I highly recommend it. I used it in conjunction with another wonderful piece by Martin, entitled "For God So Loved the World (John 3:16)", which video accompaniment is also posted on my page. I used them both at Christmas, but they could just as easily be used at Easter, or in fact any time during the year. Get this choral anthem (scored for piano and flute): Pieta, by Joseph M. Martin, (c)2005 by Malcolm Music. Published by Harold Flammer Music through Shawnee Press, Inc., choral catalogue No. A-7914. (For God So Loved is No. A-7961).

Gian Giacomo Guelfi- PietĂ , rispetto, amore

Gian Giacomo Guelfi (b.1924) Perhaps one day someone will be able to give me a logical explanation as to WHY in the wide world Guelfi's name pops up so infrequently in discussions of great baritones of the 1950's and '60's. Born in Rome, Guelfi studied in Florence with Bianca Elice (Enzo Mascherini's teacher) and Titta Ruffo; in time he became a worthy heir to the latter's mantle of Verdi baritone par excellence. Indeed, in terms of pure vocal refulgence, I can think of only two other baritones that could equal him in the post-Leonard Warren era: the great Romanian Nicolae Herlea, and Cornell Macneil. Yet, although Guelfi was well-respected and enjoyed a fine worldwide career, he never seemed to garner the lavish praise bestowed on such contemporaries as Bastianini, Taddei, Cappuccilli, and Gobbi. It can be said that he was a relatively straightforward singer and certainly not the last word in subtlety, but that is true of a great many singers (think Merrill, or Warren himself). And while Guelfi did not possess Gobbi's gift of nuance, he had a much, MUCH better voice and sang with substantially greater technical assurance. I am at a total loss as to why Guelfi's voice- a huge, dark, potent, rugged instrument that never thinned out on top- was virtually ignored by the record companies, who must surely shoulder at least part of the blame for his "second-tier" status today. Aside from the famous Karajan-led "Cavalleria" with Bergonzi and Cossotto on Deutsche Grammophon (and ...

Documentary Vivaldi and the women of the Pieta - Vivaldi's Women

Another documentary from the Beeb this one deals with Vivaldi's creative relationship with the girls of the Ospedale della PietĂ for whom he composed so much music. Musicologists often blithely ignore the fact that Vivaldi wrote a lot of his music specifically for all woman and girl orchestras and choirs. I've never understood why this should be so difficult to grasp but apparently it is.

Virginia Zeani "Se pieta" Giulio Cesare

Handel's Giulio Cesare was staged at La Scala Milan in 1956. Virginia Zeani, with a voice large enough for Aida, sings with impeccable poise and grace. Handel was unequalled in writing expressively for the voice and was accustomed to working with the greatest singers. His music is best served by full voiced singers provided they have the appropriate sense of style as demonstrated so beautifully here. As was customary in the 1950s the male roles were sung by a bass, Nicola Rossi Lemeni and a tenor, Franco Corelli. The men were so handsome in their short Roman skirts that it was known as the contest of the beautiful legs. Rossi Lemeni won.
