Twitter banned / blocked in Pakistan - May 20, 2012

www.vidjin.com Social networking website Twitter has been restricted in Pakistan, Dawn News reported on Sunday. According to the ministry of information technology, the website was banned due to blasphemous and inflammatory content. Calls for particiaption in inflammatory contests were being made on Twitter and it was due to this that such a step was taken. Twitter is very popular in Pakistan and is also used by many prominent politicians and law-makers.Pakistani authorities today blocked access to Twitter in several parts of the country despite Interior Minister Rehman Malik's claim that no restrictions were being imposed on the micro-blogging site. There was no official word on the development but users from different parts of Pakistan, especially Islamabad and the nearby garrison city of Rawalpindi, reported that they were unable to access the site on their computers and mobile phones. The move came hours after Interior Minister Malik himself tweeted early this morning that the government had no plans to impose restrictions on Twitter and Facebook. "Dear all, I assure (you) that Twitter and (Facebook) will continue in our country and it will not be blocked. (Please) do not believe in rumours," he said in a tweet. In another tweet, Malik dismissed a question from a New York Times reporter about reports that the government intended to restrict access to Twitter. "Why (should) I even think of doing so?" Malik asked. Yesterday, TV news channels had quoted Information ...

India-Pakistan border post opens for business

For the first time since 2007, India and Pakistan are set to open a historic border crossing for commercial traffic passing through the two nations. The "integrated check post," as it is known, close to Wagah, the only road crossing between the antagonistic neighbours, is the first of 13 border posts set to open following years of negotiations between the two sides. The opening of the crossing at Attari could see the number of trucks entering Pakistan increase from 150 to 800 a day, greatly boosting business on both sides of the border. Al Jazeera's Prerna Suri reports from the Wagah border.

'Stop the drones!': US ignores Pakistan plea

The rift in US-Pakistani relations looks set to widen after Washington failed to assure the once close ally, that it would end drone attacks on Pakistani territory. Islamabad's demands fell on deaf ears though, during the visit of the US special envoy, who's in Pakistan amid efforts to mend fractured ties. Relations between the two derailed following the US raid that killed Osama bin Laden, and a NATO airstrike that left 24 Pakistani soldiers dead. To discuss this, RT talks to Robert Farley, who's an assistant professor at the University of Kentucky. RT on Twitter twitter.com RT on Facebook www.facebook.com

Pakistan anger as NATO routes set to reopen

The US and Pakistan are finalising details to reopen NATO supply routes into Afghanistan. The routes were closed six months ago after a US air raid on a Pakistani military post near the Afghan border killed several Pakistani soldiers, causing widespread anger. Most people associated with Pakistan's trucking industry have seen a decline in their business since the routes were halted. They are among the few who are upbeat about the reinstatement. The majority of Pakistanis, however, are in opposition to the move. Al Jazeera's Kamal Hyder reports from Peshawar on the impact of the government's decision to reopen the routes.

Pakistan closures affect Afghan lives

Pakistan's president says he will go to Chicago for a NATO summit on Afghanistan, which is an indication that Pakistan may be willing to reopen the coalition's supply routes into Afghanistan. Pakistan blocked the routes in November in protest over a US air raid that killed 24 Pakistani troops. The closures, a consequence of a major dispute between Pakistan and the US, have also affected Afghan citizens' lives for the worse. Jennifer Glass reports from Kabul, where the blockade has prevented some schools from receiving much needed supplies.
