Bloody omaha was created by Colin Thornton, Neil Wilson and Steven Flynn who run the graphics company Compost Creative . www.Compostcreative.com Team Compost headed out to Omaha Beach for 4 days armed with a Z1 camera, a pop up greenscreen, some soldier uniforms and 2 rubber rifles (we couldnt afford 3), and begun the process of covering the beach (with camera on the cliff top), and re-enacting the veterans moving accounts. When back in London (and back in our real day job) we began to piece together all wed shot using adobe after effects, (and a little 3d modelling in maya) turning the 3 of us into the invading US army. 6 Weeks later the work was completed and provides a moving insight to the US veterans memories of storming Omaha beach, for BBC 2's Timewatch: Bloody Omaha. Eric Hahn set the Guinness World Record for Tallest Mohawk in Omaha Nebraska on 11/14/2008. The Mohawk was done by two student stylists at Capitol School of Hairstyling. Eric did this not only for the World Record but for charity. His cut hair has been donated to Locks of Love and money from sponsored events went to Project Nightlights - both charities were children's charities. Notes: --Eric did not raise the Mohawk as a fashion statement and does not wear it around daily. --Only hair spray was used and allowed by the world record rules. --He had to do a lot of work to get the official paperwork done, sponsorship, and media for this event. Subscribe to Excellent World War II Videos At six miles wide, Omaha was the largest of the landing areas, with the toughest defense. The water and beach were littered with mines and the entire beach being overlooked by 30-metre cliffs. The experienced 352nd German Infantry Division had the beach covered. The 1st Infantry assault experienced the worst ordeal of the D-Day operation. All but two out of 29 amphibious tanks sank and almost all the senior officers were killed or wounded as they set foot on the beach. Despite a 50% casualty rate, the survivors regrouped and pressed on. Aided by heavy naval bombardment, the infantry crossed the beach and began scaling the cliffs. Paratroops closed in on the German defense from behind, enabling the beach exits to be secured by midday. The Americans suffered 2400 casualties at Omaha on June 6th, but 34000 Allied troops had landed by nightfall.

With the release of over 100000 CFS of water from Gavins Point Dam (and higher rates to follow), Sioux City and points south are preparing for a record level of flooding. With cameras in hand, we traveled North to Sioux City to see first hand the amount of flooding already taking place. Sioux City, Iowa & Dakota Dunes, South Dakota are the first in the path to see the effects of Gavins Point release... with many residents from the Dakota Dunes region & South Sioux, NE taking the brunt of the flooding. Many local volunteers along with the National Guards are working around the clock trying to build up the levee system... Farther south in Decatur, NE levels are expected to reach record highs by mid June with most of the low lying areas flooded on both the Nebraska and Iowa sides of the river. While we were there, the river was still in its banks but with the predicted levels, the city park and marina will be 10ft under water within a week. Stopping in Blair, NE... most roads leading to the river were already closed due to minor flooding and the trailer park on the south side of Hwy-30 was inches away from flooding... Walter Dickens, 89, of Monroe North Carolina was inducted into the Army in 1941. He served as a medic, a first sergeant with the 116th Infantry Regiment of the 29th Division that was in the first assault wave to hit the beaches at Normandy on D-Day, 6 June 1944. Visit The War Years www.thewaryears.co.uk Omaha Beach was just one of the five sectors of the Allied invasion of German-occupied France in the Normandy landings on 6 June 1944, during World War Two. On D-Day, the untested 29th Infantry Division, joined by nine companies of US Army Rangers redirected from Pointe du Hoc, were to assault the western half of the beach. The battle-hardened 1st Infantry Division was given the eastern half. Opposing the landings was the German 352nd Infantry Division. The defenses were unexpectedly strong on Omaha, and the German defenders inflicted heavy casualties on landing US troops. Under heavy fire, the engineers struggled to clear the beach obstacles; later landings bunched up around the few channels that were cleared. Weakened by the casualties taken just in landing, the surviving assault troops could not clear the heavily defended exits off the beach. Supported by close range naval gunfire small penetrations were eventually made by groups of survivors making improvised assaults, scaling the bluffs between the most heavily defended points. The US troops on "Bloody Omaha" suffered around 3000 casualties and over 1000 killed. However, a foothold was gained and the Battle for Normandy could begin.
