NORTHERN SOUL - THE TEMPESTS - 'SOMEDAY'

TEMPESTS hailed from, or around, Charlotte, North Carolina. The group was first set up by two brothers Mike and Roger Bunch. In 1968, "Would You Believe!" album was released on the Smash label, a subsidiary of Mercury records. At the time of this release, the Tempests consisted of ten members. The leader singer and co-songwriter of 'Someday' was Hazel Martin Jr. (1936-2008). He had a powerful and distinctive voice, described by some with "an unforgettable, honey-soaked voice". 'Someday', and other tracks featured on the album, became highly sought after in the early 1980's on the Northern-Rare Soul scene. The track was featured regularly on DJ Guy Hennigan's top twenty at Top of the World, Stafford. Initial plays of the record in 1983 required the traditional practice of 'covering-up'. Consequently, the artist was introduced for a brief time as 'Bobby Paris!' The Tempests also figured prominently in the Carolina Beach scene.

Tony Clarke - Landslide (Northern Soul)

Tony Clarke: Born Ralph Thomas Williams was an American soul singer-songwriter born 1944 in New York City and raised in Detroit. Clarke died in 1970, too late to see his career see a resurgence in the 1970s on the UK northern soul scene. The intense devotion was given to an obscure Chess single, "Landslide", released in 1967, and a song recorded later in Detroit on MS called "(They call me) a wrong man". Clarke also had a minor role in the Sidney Poitier film 'They Call Me MISTER TIBBS!' in 1970.

The naming of 'Northern Soul'

Dave Godin. Reviewer and music journalist for the magazine 'Blues and Soul' Recognising the dynamic difference in musical taste between the London and Manchester Soul scenes, coined the phrase 'Northern Soul'. Dave Godin, journalist, activist, arts cinema director; born June 31 1936; died October 15 2004 www.twistedwheel.com Roger Eagle, (Juke box Johnson in this video) Was an influential DJ, record collector, club promoter, musical mentor and the founder of 'Erics ' in Liverpool. Roger was born in Oxford. Distantly related to George Bernard Shaw, his mother, Dorothy, edited the Oxford Literary Guide To The British Isles. But like many teenagers in 1950s Britain, Roger was captivated by black American rock 'n' roll and blues. The beat group scene lured him on a weekend motorbike jaunt to Manchester. He stayed, and had his mother send his clothes by post. Roger Eagle, Twisted Wheel DJ. born July 15, 1942; died May 4, 1999. www.twistedwheel.com Songs on this video: Melba Moore- The Magic Touch. NORTHERN SOUL - TONY MIDDLETON - 'PARIS BLUES'

TONY MIDDLETON has something of a cult following on the Rare/Northern Soul scene via several excellent dancers. Paris Blues was recorded for Bell (1776, Broadway, New York) subsidiary record label, Mala in 1966. This autobiographical number concerned Tony's down-and-out stay in the French capitol in the early 60's. Enormously popular in 1976, 'Paris Blues" still commands a high price today for this big city style production by Claus Ogerman, particularly on original blue issue copy. Equally popular, is the dramatic recording and pounding version of an old Nat 'King' Cole number 'To the Ends of the Earth' (US MGM and for an even rarer release, on UK Polydor records 1966). Other recordings sought after by soul collectors include; Spanish Maiden (Speed and Storm 1969) My Home Town (Alpha 1962) You Spoiled My Reputation (ABC Paramount 1965) My Little Red Book (US Kapp and UK London 1965) Middleton was born June 26, 1934. in Richmond, Virginia. In the mid-1950's, Middleton moved to New York with his mother. He surpassed others with his skills in various sports and started to box as an amateur in his late 20's. He began his singing career in the Dovers and then joined the 5 Willows in 1952, becoming their lead singer as the group changed their name to the Willows. In 1958 he went solo, however with several songs recorded on a variety of different labels, he still could not produce a hit song and decided to move to Paris in 1962. He also shortened his name and recorded as Tony ...

NORTHERN SOUL - CHARADES - 'THE KEY TO MY HAPPINESS'

The MGM CHARADES were formed with a different line-up when the original 1950/60's Doo-wop group, who had planned a comeback, were reluctant to sign a new contract. This prompted the record label to work with a mysterious new act based in New York. However, when soul singer Dean Courtney moved from RCA records to MGM, he mentioned that John T Mac Junior had been running The Charades. The same group may be linked with the Charades that recorded 'You're With Me All The Way'/'Power Of Love' on the Mercury label in 1965 -both sides written by J. Mack. Robert Pruter's 'Chicago Soul' book, explains that only a few Chicago acts in the 60's appeared on Mercury. The producer credited on the label is Tom Wilson -best known for his work in the 1960s with Bob Dylan, Frank Zappa, Simon and Garfunkel and The Velvet Underground. Arranged and conducted by Horace Ott. The Charades recorded two 45's for MGM Records; 'Key To My Happiness/'Weeping Cup' (66) written by Robert Gerald Maxwell 'I Don't Want To Lose You'/'Never Set Me Free' (66) written by Maxwell flip Rhodes-Casey 'Can't Make It Without You'/'Love Of My Life' also recorded by the Charades (Okeh Records) 1964 -arranged and conducted by Horace Ott. 'You Better Believe It'/'Darling Believe Him' also by the Charades (Harlem Hitparade) Woodbury, New York 1973. Distributed by Pickwick Records, this is a much earlier recording -again, written by Horace Ott. "From the very first bars of the piano and drums this is Northern Soul at its ...

It's Better To Have It - Northern Soul 1966

Barbara Lynn 1966 ! GORGEOUS True soul! Barbara Lynn (born Barbara Lynn Ozen, later Barbara Lynn Cumby 16 January 1942 in Beaumont, Texas) is an American rhythm and blues guitarist and singer. She played piano as a child, but switched to guitar. Inspired by blues artists Guitar Slim and Jimmy Reed, and pop acts Elvis Presley and Brenda Lee, she created an all-female band, Bobbie Lynn and the Idols. Singer Joe Barry introduced Lynn to producer Huey Meaux. Her first single "You'll Lose A Good Thing" was a #1 R&B hit and Top 10 pop hit in 1962 and was later a country hit for Freddy Fender. Soon Lynn was touring with such soul music greats as Gladys Knight, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Dionne Warwick, Jackie Wilson, Sam Cooke, Otis Redding, James Brown, Al Green, Carla Thomas, Marvin Gaye, Ike and Tina Turner, The Temptations, and BB King. She appeared at the Apollo Theatre, twice on American Bandstand, and even had her song "Oh Baby (We've Got A Good Thing Goin')" recorded by The Rolling Stones. She married for the first time at age 28 and had three children. While living in Los Angeles, occasionally appeared at local clubs. After her husband's death, she returned to Beaumont, where her mother lived, and began recording again.

NORTHERN SOUL - FREDA PAYNE - 'ON EASY STREET'

FREDA PAYNE (born 1942, Detroit, Michigan) is an American singer and actress best known for her million selling, 1970 hit single, "Band of Gold". Freda Payne grew up listening to different jazz singers, such as Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday. As a teenager, she attended the Institute of Musical Arts; she soon began singing radio commercial jingles, and took part in (and won many of) local TV and radio talent shows. In 1963, she moved to New York and worked with many different entertainers, including Quincy Jones, Pearl Bailey, and Bill Cosby. The following year, her debut album, a jazz recording entitled After the Lights Go Down Low and Much More!!!, was released on the Impulse! label. In 1966, she released her second album "How Do You Say I Don't Love You Anymore", for MGM Records. Although it is regarded primarily as a jazz album, there are also several covers of pop songs featured, including the Beatles' hit "Yesterday," "Let It Be Me," the Righteous Brothers' "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'," "Feeling Good," and "If You Love Me (Really Love Me)." Produced by legendary Tom Wilson (Bob Dylan, Frank Zappa and Simon and Garfunkel), the album garnered belated respect as several cuts from this LP picked up spins from several Northern Soul DJ's ( "Sad Sad September" and "Too Late") the most notable being the uptempo syncopated, version "On Easy Street" (Larry Weiss and Fred Anisfield) which was a monster for DJ/dancer Keb Darge at Stafford's Top Of The World allnighter ...

Baby You Got It- 1965 Northern Soul

The Radiants performing "You Got It" (1965). Another great classic! THE RADIANTS: An R&B vocal group from Chicago, Illinois, USA, the Radiants were a typical transitional group of the early 60s, bringing doo-wop harmonies into the soul era with gospel-inspired vocal treatments. The group began in 1960 when Maurice McAlister (11 January 1940, Mississippi, USA) distilled a vocal group from members of the Greater Harvest Baptist Church choir. The original group besides McAlister (lead) were Wallace Sampson (baritone), Jerome Brooks (second tenor), Elzie Butler (bass) and Charles Washington, later replaced by Green "Mac" McLauren (first tenor), and their first hit (and record) for Chess Records was the Miracles-styled "Father Knows Best" (1962), but the superior b-side, "One Day I'll Show You", received much regional play. "Heartbreak Society" and "Shy Guy", both 1963, failed to generate sales outside the Chicago area, and the group reorganized as a trio - McAlister, Sampson and Leonard Caston Jnr. The trio format introduced a unique pronounced switch-off lead style, in which the vocal interplay worked as a constant flux of voices slipping in and out of the musical mix, most evident on "Voice Your Choice" (number 16 R&B), from 1964, and "It Ain't No Big Thing" (number 14 R&B), from 1965. Another reorganization took place in 1965, in which McAlister left the group, and the Radiants then had a hit with "Feel Kind Of Bad" (number 47 R&B); after yet another reorganization, they ...

NORTHERN SOUL - EDWARD HAMILTON - BABY DON'T YOU WEEP

"A top-notch discovery and perfect for the scene" Donald Moore, soul fan Michigan, USA Hamilton was born in Birmingham, Alabama and moved to East Detroit as a young child. There he later formed the Arabians (including members Clarence McClean, George Goodman, Charles Laird and Robert Tutt). Record label owner and singer, Johnnie "Mae" Matthews gave them their first release "The Shack" on her Northern Label in 1960. Their next stop was the Lanrod label and their first encounter with the influential James Hendrix who issued "My One Possession" on Carrie records. Two tracks recorded for Hendrix were released to James Kemper's New York Label, Le Mans, and although "(Please) Take a Chance on Me" didn't hit at the time, it became a huge collector's item ten years on. After a brief spell with a new Falcons line-up, Hamilton returned to Hendrix, who was then working with Lou Beatty, and was put under Melvin Davis's wing, recording "Call Me" for Carrie records. The track had sufficient potential to go to New York again, this time on the Jameco record label. In 1967 Hamilton reunited with the Arabians and signed for Beatty's Mary Jane label, with Coleman instead of Tutt. The label brought a clutch of excellent sides, all now revered on the Northern Soul and Detroit collectors scenes. Following the closure of La Beat records and subsequently Mary Jane, Hamilton left the music scene to work in the car plants.
