Three Types of Muscle There are three types of muscle, each with a different structure and function. Skeletal muscle produces the most powerful contractions and is essentially involved in performing the body's movements. Skeletal muscle is under conscious control and is therefore described as voluntary. It is composed of cells, elongated up to twelve inches in length, containing many minute myofibrils and nuclei. It can contract and relax rapidly, but is easily fatigued. Smooth muscle is found in the arteries and in the digestive and urinary tracts, and performs the slow, long-term contractions needed to maintain these systems. Smooth muscle is made up of elongated cells arranged in bundles, each with a single nucleus. Within the intestines an inner circular band produces ring-like constrictions and an outer longitudinal band produces wavelike motions. Controlled by the autonomic system, smooth muscle contraction is involuntary. Cardiac muscle, found exclusively in the heart, continuously generates very strong contractions and rarely tires in its task of pumping blood throughout the body. It has a built-in rhythm of contraction, but is regulated by the heart's pacemaker. Cardiac muscle forming the heart is made up of branched cells containing many nuclei. It occurs as thick spiral bands around the ventricles of the heart.

You cannot spot-reduce the midsection by doing extra ab exercises like crunches or sit-ups. You first must burn off the body fat through proper cardio to properly define the area. Abdominal training by itself will not do much. Cardio needs to be intense enough to do the trick. Three to four sessions a week of intense jogging, running, the Stairmaster, the elliptical, jumping rope, or biking should be enough to get the process in gear. Swimming, hiking, and taking aerobics classes are beneficial as well. Nothing beats jogging or running. It is the most intense, efficient, and effective method of burning calories. If running outside hurts your joints, try running inside on a treadmill or outside on a dirt path. It definitely is easier on the body. Again, you NEED three to four intense cardio sessions a week to help create a calorie deficit and help rid the body of the fat that covers your abs. Proper Nutrition: Do not sabotage your results in the gym by giving yourself a passport to pig out. Learn GarageBand in 30 Days! mhlo.co Muscles Worked These exercises are designed to work the upper part of your forearms, called the extensor muscles, and lower parts of your forearms, called the brachioradialis muscles. Upper Forearm To exercise your upper forearm, first kneel on the ground and step one foot up in front of you. Hold a dumbbell in one hand and rest the bottom of the forearm on your raised knee. Your palm should be facing down. Keep the arm in line with your leg. In a small movement, use your wrist to bring the dumbbell up and down. Do not use your upper arm in the movement or bend your elbow. Your movements should be isolating the top muscle on your forearm. Lower Forearm To work the muscles of your lower forearm, stay kneeling on the ground with a foot stepped in front of you. With the dumbbell in your hand, rest the top of your forearm on your knee. The palm should be facing up this time. Keep the arm in line with your leg. Bring the dumbbell up and down in the same way as before by bending your wrist. This is not a bicep curl and should not use any muscles from your upper arm. Make sure the movement isolates the muscle of the lower forearm. Both of these exercises can be performed with a barbell instead of dumbbells. To do this, hold a barbell in both your hands and sit on a bench.
